    There is one more hybrid option, and it might be the best. A C-Fast dummy attached to a dock with one of the really large Samsung SSD-cards like the 860 Pro 4 TB. You do have to carve a little hole like 2x5 mm in the top of the opening into the card slots to make room for the flat cable. It works great. And it's much cheaper that the C-fast cards and with much more storage.

      Happy new year to you too. I wish I did. With the braw update coming later in the year it looks unlikely for there to be a mark 2 anytime soon. There are rumours of an A7v which might be worth keeping an eye on. I’d imagine that would have 4K 60p full frame and perhaps some other new features

    Jonathan do both the Sony A74, Sony FX3, Sony FX30, Panasonic S5 Mark 2 have battery grips available for them. Nikon do the best screens in my opinion. My Nikon D5500 and Nikon D5600 have better screen than on the Sony A74.

    If only they made a f2.8 version of it. This is a lens im always tempted to buy, due to being parfocal and having OSS at that wide range. The new 28-70 f2 makes me think its possible. The only reason i have not bought it, is because it limits shooting pictures to 15 fps and focusing aint fast enough for sports. It needs the new xd linear motors 😢

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’d imagine it would be pretty big and heavy although Canon have almost achieved it with their new 24-105 2.8 so maybe it’s possible. Sadly I don’t think it’s a market with that much demand so there probably won’t be an update to this lens.

  • @frankfeng2701

    On FX3/A7S3/ZV-E1, I'd rather go with Tamron 17-50 f/4 or Sony 16-35 f/4. Both are internal zoom and having more reach, which is more important than f/2.8. On a7IV and a7R5, the cheaper route is to go with Sigma 10-18 f/2.8 and/or Tamron 20-40 f/2.8. When budget is no issue, 16-35 GM2 is the way to go. On L-mount, this might be the best or only choice.

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Must admit I didn’t even know the Tamron 17-50 existed! That’s a very useful range. I should have made the point about F2.8 not being that important as well. I almost always have this lens above 5.6 when shooting with it.

    Ooh yeah I swapped to this lens on my S5IIX recently, and it replaced all my other Panasonic wide lenses for video. I use the 50% crop in 50p mode as you say, to get a longer focal length. Overall very happy with it - bright enough for indoor use (even in my dark office) but flexible enough for all-day use for me.

    People misunderstand what a "Netflix camera" means. Plenty of films streaming on Netflix were shot on the fx3 a7iii and a7iv and look great and we're either sold or licensed to Netflix. Being "Netflix worthy" just means IF YOU WERE SHOOTING for Netflix and creating assets they could or would be posting or owning, you would at least need what they were asking for camera-wise. If you shot a film or doc on the FX3, did a festival run, and then shopped it, you would be fine.

      True although you are getting quite a different field of view and perspective with a 24mm lens v a 35mm. Generally 35mm will probably look nicer however there are times you need a less compressed image. Getting a wide shot of a room for example.

    It’s really time for Sony to have some sort of RAW format internally on the next gen Cinema Line cameras, namely the FX6 and FX3. The current all-intra codecs are fine but they really start to lag behind when compared with the internal RAW codecs of the (fierce) competition. The FX3 can’t even record MXF files like the FX6 for unknown reasons, I have to transcode on CB to get the Sony RAW functionality on Resolve which is extremely time consuming. Sony obviously have the knowledge and the financial resources to make it happen if they really want to. Having great AF and low light performance isn’t enough anymore, most competitors have internal RAW nowadays which is a major advantage for professional work. It’s certainly nice to get a great codec like BRAW but it will still be externally. Not ideal at all. It’s time Sony.

      Sorry that should have been 31mm. A bit wider than say a 24mm which would give you a 36mm equivalent.

    Thanks for this video about your Octopus gimbal rig. I built a similar rig, everything seems to be set up correctly, but I am having trouble getting the balance calibration once the gimbal is on the Octopus rig. When my RS 2 is mounted on the Octopus rig, entering the calibration mode gives me an error that the RS 2 is not horizontal and can't be balanced. If I go back to a conventional Ronin set up and balance and calibrate the gimbal, it is way out of balance when I mounted it back on the Octopus rig. Any suggestions?

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah you’ll probably have trouble doing a calibration on this rig. I had just done it before with the lens and then put it on the rig. If you’re not switching between lenses and changing the balance much you should be pretty good to just do it once and then leave it.

    I would recommend staying away from Purger, as it seems the company is not very real, has awful correspondence with customers and, thus far, has not meaningfully responded to my multiple requests to honor its money back guarantee. I bought two of the Type A cf cards and the reader and then changed my mind. I wrote the company stating that, pursuant to the company's money back guarantee, I wanted to return the cards and reader; I also stated that all boxes were still unopened and sealed). I requested that the company furnish a return address so I could return the unopened boxes. Despite several requests, the company has not given me the address I requested. Indeed, it took days before I could even get a response. It's as though no one works there. The company is messing around with me and it seems that it simply does not want to honor it promise to refund. My advice: Stay away. Any company that fails to honor its promises is way way way too risky to trust that its products will work. As of this date, I'm still waiting for the return address.

    As a pro system design on mission critical setups, 2.4GHz is a non starter. Working in any larger city would provide too many obstacles for interference free communication where the predominance of wireless networks are everywhere. It is already difficult enough to find clear channels in the AW+ bandwidth.

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Personally never had a problem with interference with these in any location. The original wireless gos did break signal very easily. My usage has always been interview set ups so the distances are never far although in plenty of London corporate offices which you’d imagine have a lot of 2.4GHz signals.

    Hi, thanks for the video. Please could you explain something a bit more, I didn't quite follow. Around 1.55 you say you use them more as a backup rather than relying on the 32bit audio, i don't quite understand this workflow sorry, please could you explain a bit more? Does this mean the receiver is recording its own audio? i get that it avoids syncing because its burning in the audio track along with the video, but how is this 'avoiding' the 32bit float? is it not receiving the 32bit float tracks from the lavs? cheers

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi no problem. What I meant by that is generally I just use the audio that’s recorded in the camera as it’s already synced and sounds great. That signal is just recorded in the compression the camera uses so not 32 bit. Normally absolutely fine if you get your levels right however it would peak if it got too loud. Only the transmitters record 32 bit float, so if you need to recover a clipped audio track you’d need to use the file from the transmitter. I really hope the next generation of cameras come with 32 bit float recording, it really should be a standard thing now. I’m surprised it’s not something Blackmagic has done.

    I own this system and love it!! Excellent sound quality and ease of use. As for harping on the size, I don’t get that. I ALWAYS use the lavs which have better quality and look more professional on your guests instead of a clunky box attached to the chest area. No brainer right? Your critique of not having a replaceable battery is a non-starter as well. Being able to split the tracks from 2 mics going into the camera to help in editing is also great! Nice review so thank you !!!!

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree I personally much prefer to use them with lavs however for content creators it does seem they just like the speed and convenience of using the built in mics. For them I think the smaller size of the DJI is nicer. The battery thing is just something I’ve seen a lot of people complain about however personally I don’t see the problem. Throwing away AA batteries all the time from old G3 lavs was much worse.
