I got my first copy of this book 50 years ago when I got my first car…a 72 bug. I drove that car for 10 years, put 300k miles on it, and used that book to rebuild the engine 3 times at 100k mile intervals. You will not find a better book as a newbie veewee owner. BTW…the illustrations alone are worth the price of the book. I’m now retired and using that same book to fully restore a ‘72 bug identical to my first. John Muir (the author) is an old school mechanic. You will learn how to set your timing with a bulb from your tail light, or how to adjust your points with a matchbook. No diagnostic ports or high tech equipment needed. You diagnose potential problems with your ears and hands and the seat of your pants. If you are not changing your own oil, or adjusting your own valves, you are missing out on the comfort that comes from “becoming one” with your V-Dub, and the confidence in knowing your car inside and out. Even if you never pick up a wrench, this book is an excellent read, and will give you an appreciation of the machine that carts you around. BTW, Nice Ride!!! That car looks like it has seen a lot of love!

In 2018 I purchased a 17' travel trailer and although the features were nice, I really didn't use most of them. The size of the trailer didn't allow it to fit in my garage and finding fully serviced campsites was often difficult. In retrospect, a trailer like this would have been a much better choice for my wife and I.

Very nice trailer and nicely set up. Does rainwater settle on top of your awning to the point where it gets really heavy? Do you need to drain the top occasionally?

It is a great book. In 1975, I got a used 1964 bug. My Dad bought me a used copy from the swap meet. Spiral bound 1st edition. Lot's O Weed smok'n in that book. Haha. Later versions were toned down a bit. All these years later I got another '64. Restored it. These cars are so fun to drive and get into your soul !

I was a very stupid 16 year old when I owned my first car ...1972 powder blue beetle. I rolled it in an ice storm on Christmas Eve on my way home from waitress job. My father banged out the roof. I paid to have the frame straightened. It looked bad but I drove it for 2 more years!!! Loved it!!! I want to buy a new "classic" 72!

Nice car! My father had a 72 Super Beetle sedan back then, Kasan Red. He used to buy used Beetles, flog them mercilessly in downtown Boston until he killed them, then buy another. The Super only had a few hundred miles on it when he bought it, and the heat worked so well that it melted the ice scraper that he left on the rear floor--melted it right down to a useless plastic blob! After he murdered the 72 Super he had a 70 convertible. The top would leak right onto your legs--someone told us that the front edge of the top is framed with wood, which would warp and make sealing against the windshield impossible. The water would pour in if you were on the highway; hilarious. Your video reminds me that the build quality of these cars was quite astounding. The engineering is a little goofy (remember that much of the design was from the 1930's), but the grade of materials and standard of assembly were way beyond what one would expect from one of the least expensive cars on the market.

Yes I had VW's and this book and if you want your car to run and keep on running read and adhere to the owner's manual - read the book for entertainment only for it will send your car to the VW junk yard otherwise known as The Old Volks At Home.

Yes stately in its simplicity and the operator was not vexed by an overabundance of esoteric meters and gauges which simply confuse and not enlighten. I always almost always enjoyed my VW save in winter when I discovered that the heat exchangers had rusted out or when the muffler rusted through or when the battery died every two years. But I did enjoy the driving excitement of when the front end shooked and shimmied like a WW2 bomber flying through flak. Those were the days!
