Calving 2025 starts on the Newford Farm at Scrine Co, Roscommon. The Newford suckler demonstration farm was established by Teagasc and Dawn Meats with support by McDonalds. There are 86 cows to calve this year and the first calf arrived on the 31st January. Calving will last for 10 weeks. Cows are grouped on slats by calving date and then moved to a straw bedded area just before calving time. Disinfection of boots, application of lime on slats and navel dipping throughout this period is paramount to keep disease levels to a minimum. Some of the first cows along with their new calves are out on grass by day during this current settled weather.
