Clan Line at Woking in 2024
57 years ago in 1967, steam traction on the Southern Region of British Railways finished.
For many a railway enthusiast of a certain age in the south of England, this was a sad event.
Luckily for us all, the Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society has kept 35028 "Clan Line" in magnificent condition ever since - after purchasing the locomotive a month later in August 1967!
She has been hauling steam specials on BR tracks since April 1974.
Long may she continue!

Steam Locos in China in 1998
มุมมอง 2.2Kปีที่แล้ว
25 years after the original footage was shot, this is a digital remaster and re-edit of a video that gives a glimpse into the world of steam power on the railways of Northern China in 1998. Industrial systems at a limestone quarry, coal mine and steel works are covered before the main feature - the Jitong Railway of Inner Mongolia and the legendary Jing Peng Pass where heavy freight trains haul...

Vulcan at Farnborough International Airshow 2012

This was the Saturday performance of the Vulcan on 14 July at Farnborough International Airshow 2012. Apologies for the noise of those pesky helicopter taxis - why they are allowed to fly during Farnborough's star turn I have no idea!

Two top performers during Saturday's public air display were the Abarth Extra 330M and the Typhoon. Whilst the low cloud base cramped the style of some of the aerobatic performers - not these two! Which gets your vote - the astonishing tail slide, somersault and inverted loop of the Extra or the high G power turns of the Eurofighter Typhoon?
Jacobite Stalls at Beasdale
มุมมอง 17K12 ปีที่แล้ว
"The Jacobite" is touted as "The world's greatest train journey" and we joined the fully booked train in the company of tourists from home and abroad. It was a perfect summer's day at the end of May 2012 and 62005 had a full head of steam on dry rails. So, what went wrong on the 1 in 48 incline and reverse curves on the approach to Beasdale? The word was that, following a trackside fire on an e...

1500 hrs to Cauldon Lowe on 20 November 2010
มุมมอง 27813 ปีที่แล้ว
The second weekend of the Gala Re-opening of the Cauldon Lowe Branch Line saw a mixture of steam and diesel traction. It was chilly autumnal weather but the fog did not blow down off the Dales and the season of mists was augmented by volcanic amounts of steam and coal smoke from the labouring locos on the 1 in 40 gradient from Leebrook Junction up to Bradnop and Ipstones Summit. We take the 150...
Sir Lamiel at Woking October 2007
มุมมอง 19214 ปีที่แล้ว
This is the first effort from Locomotion Pictures to be published on TH-cam. As this is the season of falling leaves and windy weather, it is a video shot in 2007 of Sir Lamiel leaving Woking on the Cathedrals Express on 28 October 2007. It was wet and slippery, and as Sir Lamiel struggled to gain adhesion with its safety valves popping and the fireman stoking, it made a fine site!

That sounds as if the pressure was so low the brakes came on.

Certainly a reminder that Beasdale bank, 1 in 48, is not to be trifled with! The Mallaig line is very scenic but also a real test for any locomotive. But there are squeals on the first climb that are not there on the second at similar or greater speeds, therefore not just wheel flanges. So I would agree with those who reckoned that the brakes partly leaked on the first time, especially as the engine was blowing off as it stalled. The second time as well as rebuilding steam pressure the driver may well have ensured he was pulling the best possible vacuum before restarting, and the engine slogged steadily up the steepest part.

Sounds to me like low steam pressure causing brakes to apply and needing to stop for a blow up.

Not the first Jacobite to fail since April 1746. Perhaps the train should be renamed The Hanoverian and be pulled by the Duchess of Sutherland?

Stalls are caused by the steam engine losing enough boiler pressure to climb the gradient, as the engine starts to work harder and harder, more steam is being used and the rate it's being generated starts to drop, causing the boiler to lose pressure. As the boiler loses pressure, the brakes start to apply causing the engine to go even slower and thus' making it stall. The steam crew must then wait for the pressure to rise again, to release the brakes and then make an attempt at restarting.

Thank you Dave. I use copyright music on most of my videos so it is a problem to publish them - but I guess music by Elgar on a fairground organ should be OK? I did publish another GDSF video on You Tube from 2010 which gives a different angle on this wonderful show.

Nice video and great commentary, I can appreciate someone who has taken time to get the footage, cuts, and audio right before uploading to TH-cam. I especially like the long shots of the rollers coming up the hill - very effective I shall be looking out for more of your work in the future. Regards Dave H..

Thanks for your response - I had to replay my video several times to work out what the 330 pilot had done after cutting the power for the tail slide! Makes up for missing any snakebites or tail slides from a Sukhoi SU-27 - the Russian Knights never showed up!

That sound must surely be brakes binding? Not the squeal usually associated with flanges on tight curves

As I was recording the video I thought "they have left the brakes on" but later I was told it was the sound of the wheel flanges on the curve with the rising gradient. This is plausible as there is a similar sound on the second, successful, attempt at the apex of the curve.
