Like open the app and use it on my phone, I’m using the z-wave hub app for home automation controls. Its kinda like remote desktop only on a phone screen. Thanks

    • @ShaneAJM
      @ShaneAJM 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just in case my public IP got leaked I didn't want people to know what port I had a VPN on. You can obviously just port scan and find it but I didn't wanna make it easier lol.

    How to access my server privately with my own VPN setup since port fowarding is risky?

    • @ShaneAJM
      @ShaneAJM 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could try something like ZeroTier. You don't need to forward any ports and you can still access services on your network but only devices that have ZeroTier installed. I use it with my friends as I host a Minecraft server internally and it works well.

    • @UnixOath
      @UnixOath 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShaneAJM can you make a video for ZeroTier tutorial? I'd love to see. By the way, you and Biased Riot are pretty much underrated but actually both of you have great content.

  • @emmgeevideo
    @emmgeevideo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here's what I don't understand. At the end you showed an example of how you can now turn a light on and off after the integration. How did you turn that light on and off prior to using Homebridge? I'll give you the example I would like to enable. I have a garage door opener that uses MyQ. I can open and close the garage door with the MyQ app via Bluetooth on my iPhone. In other words, my iPhone is making the garage door go up and down via a Bluetooth command triggered by the MyQ app. MyQ integrates into HomeKit via Homebridge. So let's say I've successfully added MyQ to Homebridge. I press the HomeKit button. Does HomeKit control the MyQ app instead of my finger on the MyQ button?

    • @ShaneAJM
      @ShaneAJM 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It translates the API calls from what I can tell. I used to use the Kasa app to control the lights but now that it's in Homekit I rarely need to actually open the Kasa app. You'll probably still need to keep MyQ installed as Homekit only works locally and doesn't give you full access to settings. It's just another way to control smart home devices if you have Apple automations set up or want everything in one app.

    • @emmgeevideo
      @emmgeevideo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShaneAJM I think that is pretty heavy lifting on HomeKit's side. I wonder if there is a library of API calls that a HomeKit-compliant device has to use. "Open", "close", "current state", etc. are probably pretty standard across products. I guess that's why HomeKit can't be as functionally rich for, say, a garage door accessory than the native app. I suppose that Matter will have a similar concept except it will be "universal" vs. platform-by-platform specifications.

      If your subnet is the same as the local wifi you’re connected to (not your personal internet) it will try to route you to the local connection. For example, my house and my friends both had 192.168.0.0/24 subnets so it wouldn’t let me access my servers. When I changed mine to 192.168.3.0/24 it worked flawlessly.
