    One thing I think puts it in perspective is that Sega really didn’t need a mascot in Japan as much as they did in the west. Sega had dominated the arcade market in the 80s and had a decent amount of ips before the first sonic even released. Rather than being THE Sega game it was just another good one amongst a line up of classics. If you were to ask a Japanese sega fan to name 90s classics they would say Phantasy Star, Sakura Wars or Virtua Fighter before ever thinking of him. This isn’t me saying the games weren’t popular at all of course, the originals sold well on the mega drive and they did have some hype for the early adventure era but it’s never been consistent.

    Damn, i thought Yusuke and gang stitched and wore different coloured uniforms because its a part of being delinquent and symbolic to being a rebel or an outcast to the norms established. And according to their favorite colours that suits their personality, i actually remember in one of the episode he says his favourite colour is green, i think later on they incorporated these elements into show😂 i was so wrong. Creativity is so hard, so much goes in creative process of different makers. I've deep. Appreciation for them!

    Hot take: I wish there were more US Toku. Or at least, US live-action superhero productions taking more from Japanese toku aesthetics, production techniques and stylistic philosophies, given I think we could learn a thing or twenty from them. There've been a few attempts, weirdly enough the Aquabats Super Show pulled it off pretty well while playing up the camp, but none have stuck long term.

    even if this isn't a bad translation, i feel like goku's character is getting worse as time goes on :( his naive joke thing when he was a kid was ok but as he became an adult, it just rubs me the wrong way when both the fans and official media make him so dumb,,, and unlikable at times. super/daima being the worst offenders in this case, even if i like them

    I disagree with classifying Doctor Who as tokusatsu, even if it was (and continues to be) a special effects-heavy sci-fi show. It's missing a key ingredient: lots and lots of martial arts stunts. Even Godzilla had that lizard dropkicking mofos. When the Doctor finally starts doing Sonic Screwdriver Punch as a special attack, _then_ maybe we can classify it as tokusatsu.

    The Goku black point is very interesting. I’ve never really been able to articulate it well myself, but in Japanese Goku black sounds more similar to regular Goku but just unique enough that you get the point, like you said before it’s very good characterization via voice acting. Where as in English, although Goku black sounds cool he doesn’t sound like *Goku* it’s more like Sean is voicing a completely different character, you can recognize “Hey that’s Sean!” But you don’t think “Hey that’s an evil Goku” I hope I explained it well enough 😅

    I grew up in the 90s in the US where Power Rangers made it's BIG splash to the point they tried porting over dang near every type of Tokusatsu except Ultraman. Big Bad Beetle Borgs and VR Troopers? Those were the Armored Hero Tokusatsu, Masked Rider? Just Kame Rider Black RX repackaged...there was even a couple of crossover comics with Masked Rider and classic MMPR. There was even the West's own attempt at a sentai style show with "Mystic Knights of Tir na Nog" which was more medieval and magic themed....it was actually pretty good and I rather liked it. I liked the blue knight because his element was water and his main weapon was a trident. They tried one more time in the 2000's to bring Kamen Rider over with Ryuki, the one with the mirror world. It...didn't succeed in brining Kamen Rider to the US, while Power Rangers still thrives here in the West...even with the current holder not knowing what to do with it to the point one of the people who is or was supposed to be working on it going forward is known to have said he wants to try and get away from the Tokusatsu Roots....yeah, then it's NOT Power Rangers my guy...the core of Power Rangers IS Tokusatsu and if you get away from that then it's not going to be the same.

    It is a BIG influence for artists/creators who shaped the Japanese culture industry for the past 40 years. Like, it's basically the childhood of every Japanese entertainment professional especially the one who steer the industry now. During my study at a college art in Tokyo, my head of faculty who's also teaching moviemaking class, specially arranged a day for us to watch Ultra Seven and to digest & discuss the genius behind the series. You won't see that kind of appreciation of tokusatsu in other countries' art college probably

    • @allgoodnamestaken6002

      I think it's even more ridiculous if people who say that also like anime, because I vividly remember how anime fans were facing this exact same kind of stigma before it became mainstream and gained acceptance within the pop culture sphere. Truth be told, I think it's just some kind of projection going on. They know that they were at some point mocked and made fun of for liking the things they do because other people thought they were "weird", so one of the ways they cope with that is to look at other people who are into stuff they themselves might think is "weird" and take it out on them. We nerds are still a very insecure people. It sadly doesn't at all surprise me that some nerds will discriminate against their own kind. It's all just positioning for them to feel better about liking the things they do.

    I kind of figured that the games in the anime/manga were using actual professional matches, but I would have thought that the more amateur matches would have used records from amateur tournaments, or that the records were chosen specifically in the correct level, such as Sai playing a teaching game, I thought, would have actually been a record of a teaching game. It seems a little weird to chance someone who is a professional watching this anime and it being jarring to them how these amateur and teaching games are actually fierce matches between professionals every time, meant to look good to and fool those who don't know any better.

    I've had Marvel and DC comic book roast me for watching Tokusatsu as "kid shows". But as I checked the definition of toku, they are just the same as us lmao: superhero shows with tons of special effects. The only difference being country of origin (and of course the plots as well). Those toxic fans should REALLY pipe down just because we aren't as popular as them 😌↕😌↕

    • @allgoodnamestaken6002
      @allgoodnamestaken6002 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The difference is that American superheroes have been aggressively rebranded in the modern day as something that can be enjoyed by all ages and not exclusively for children like how they used to be seen. That's why they're now considered "acceptable" to outwardly be a fan of. I agree though, yeah. It's pretty dumb. Culturally illiterate tourists. Also, while I normally don't like tossing around "-phobic" accusations, if there truly is no difference between Marvel/DC and Japanese superhero Toku shows at their core other than country of origin, then I'm sorry but that's just xenophobia at that point.

    • @danielgeronimo5538

      Ironically Marvel and DC are far more childish for their attempts at inclusion. While Tokusatsu has always had violent and dark themes, even horror.
