Just a day trip. We decided to head for Maastricht area. Decided to cross the border into Belgium That region is so boring! However lunch at the Market square in Maaseik was nice.

A great expereince, Parapente (Paragliding), in the Alps. Me and my son did the discovery flight together with Stephane and Luc of 3 Vallees-Parapente. We would recommend this very much. It was fun, well organised and much fun!

BMW K1 restart after 12 years standstill

This K1 in the beautiful colour tone red/yellow was left inside the garage for 12 years. Almost forgotten. Finally, today, we decided to check the bike, change the gasoline, replace the battery and give it a try. We all know that the Flying Brick is a solid motor cycle. Well, for sure it is!

You are absolutely right. However Japanese technology has a good reputation too, these day. Modern BMW automotive products seems to losing reputation regarding quality standards. Another discussion :-)

Ben zelf niet zo van de race modellen, maar dit ziet er top uit. Dit is dus echt de vliegende baksteen. En ja, al staat het een eeuw stil, het blijft lopen. Heb zelf sinds kort weer een fiets, een K75RT uit 1994 met net 75.000 op de teller. Tevens ziet ik dat u ook een goede smaak van luxe eendjes heeft. Ook dat zit bij ons in de familie. Keep it rolling.

you said it, that is quality engineering, you must have a great environment there, if i left my bike garage in ireland for 12 years there would be bugger all left of it, but as interesting as the bike is the cars are FABULOUS, only an sm could heat that, i am impressed, a man who understands fine engineering

I had my K1 for 23 years and its original battery lasted 16 years. Always started imidiatly after every winter. Be aware that the rubber parts on crankcase ventilation and fuel injection system will perrish after a decade

Beautiful K1. You will have to change the fuel line tubes inside and outside the fuel tank quickly. Same goes for the fuel pump rubber mount. Time and etanol will make it leak and dissolve quickly. By the way, the best way to maintain the bike, is to ride it every now and then.

@Oscar Rosenboom We might have no option in the near future when government arseholes get their way and ban the "fancy" fuels. It's all bullshit.
Owning a K1 is a much more satisfying feeling given the rarity of the model, easier to find in a carpark than the multitude of GS Adventures out there. Love the DS also.

@@darts-multiverse Äh nee das gilt für die anderen Modelle der k reihe die K1 ist eine Zahnpasta Tube auch eindeutig zu erkennen in der Seitenansicht vom motor sieht man nicht viel bis gar nichts dank der Verkleidung
@@geraldhaller9906 Du hast recht mit der Tube. Na ja, ne Zahnpasta-Tube war es auch, man durfte nicht zu kräftig draufdrücken. Irgendwie gefällt sie ja auch, aber irgendwie verstand BMW damals noch nicht viel von modernen Sportmotorrädern. Bis sie dann anfingen, die Suzuki zu kopieren.
@@darts-multiverse na langsam war die K1 nun nicht gerad immerhin hat diese eher fragwürdige Verkleidung satte 30 Km/h generiert . Ob sie nun bei Suzuki abgegukt haben kann ich nicht sagen auf jeden fall sehen die jetzigen BMW verdammt Japanisch aus fast schon Japanischer als die Japanischen selbst aber die Motoren besonders der 1000er 4 Zylinder ist ein Brett mit über 200Ps und einer Serienstreuung nach oben . Das muss erst mal einer nach machen . Für mich ist das aber nichts mir reichen mittlere 2 stellige Leistungen z.B. 60 Ps aus 750 ccm
Heel leuk. Ik heb zelf al 15 jaar een blauwe. Twee jaar geleden volledig gespoten en nieuwe stickers er weer op. Technisch helemaal top. Rij helaas te weinig. Maar je trekt alle aandacht en bent geen stakker op de weg met een fiets van 33 jaar oud. Daarnaast een super waarde investering.
Qua afschrijving zit het wel goed met de K1 inderdaad. Die blijft in trek. Helemaal mee eens wat betreft het unieke karakter. Geen eenheidsworst. Mensen reageren nagenoeg altijd positief/verbaasd over deze ‘rare’ motor. Veel plezier met je blauwe K1!

You can see it that way. However the ‘normal’ K-series, so called flying brick, was so advanced engineered that the K1 was an extreme version of something already very good. A K1 you like or dislike I believe. No middle flavour. And how many current bike and car manufacturers do the same? Using the same basis for many models. Inn hindsight BMW was again very much advanced in their model developments: in 1988.

Got your point. Let’s say there were some reasons for it. On a positive note, the bike has a low mileage because of the stand still.
Excellent video but you can keep the BMW K1....Those beautiful Citroen's are all you need. Style. Grace and the very best of comfort. For me they are the only truly beautiful automobile. Stunning elegance from every angle.

Can't agree more. That model of Citroën were the first cars I owned many many years ago. They were my daily drivers. Working and repairing them endelessly with my limited student budget. Great memories. Expecially when living in Paris for some years and riding my DS there.

Cheers Maurits. Not sure if I want to go down the route you have taken but sure do appreciate the details of the mod. I've only has mine a few weeks and got a little cleaning up to do on it but it's in pretty good condition for a 2010. Will post mine up today sometime, look out for Pearl White Griso. I understand John, maybe an option to find an original 8V exhaust, which you can modify, as many people have them laying around. I got mine via the Griso Facebook Page. For around USD 150. So you can always go back. Will look for your bike; were will you post it? Cheers.

Hi, How did you modify your exhaust. I have a 2010 Griso and would like to the same.
Hello John, if you look into the exhaust (form the engine side) you see the catalytic convertor. Basically a honeycomb (relatively soft material). You drill many small holes into this (basically pulverise) and get it out. Can be a bit tricky, but it works by drilling many small holes of 6 to 8 mm. After the cat has been removed the sound is already deeper and louder of course. If you like more rumble, you can drill 2 to 3 holes in the plate which you see after the catalyst. Used an extension on my drill, first again small holes, and make them bigger until about 12mm. In the end I just used a big stone drill bit. The sound is now so much better than stock.
