I used to work for a pasta producer and we took all of the semolina (coarse red wheat flour) by railcar. It could be a contentious relationship with the railroad at times. When things weren’t running well at the plant we wouldn’t use all the flour sitting in the cars on our siding in time to avoid demurrage and that could really add up quickly. On the flip side the railroad didn’t seem to care much if they got cars to us on time or not. If they didn’t we would have to get flour trucked in from a local supplier, and that was a money-losing proposition. We were a captive customer and they took full advantage.

Fun to see. I really enjoy the footage of the C&NW. My Grandpa was a laborer for the C&NW on the line from Green Bay to Manitowoc.

So I guess my next question is; what is the procedure to attract helpful investors to your upstart railroad? Everyone I've ever talked to wants a controlling percentage of the company and they want to see an ROI in 2 years or less. No business can start with those sort of expectations! There's grants available for railroads who are improving their infrastructure and promoting rail traffic as opposed to highway use, but in most cases, you have to already be there, with the increase of business on your hands. If you're starting out with a line that has been all but abandoned, and waiting for the half dozen customers that are left to give up and switch to trucking or move their operations closer to a Class 1 main line, then you're looking at a starting net in the red because you've got to get out there and fill in the washouts, replace ties, repair bridges and so on, ad nauseum. All the things that the Class 1 was counting on not having to do by running off their customers and sacking the line. Even if you've got a track that's good all the way between the customer and the class 1 connection, you still have to purchase the locomotive, have a contractor on hand when tracks need regular maintenance and pay your bills to keep the lights on. When you're opening a burger restaurant or computer store, you might be able to get enough capital to invest by taking out a mortgage on your house, but unless you own a $10M mansion unencumbered, you're not going to have enough to get started on a short line. So how do these guys do it? Dick Webb managed to do it with a couple trucks and a job briefing on his back porch in the mornings...

The AI here has pretty good results but I wouldn't fully replace the original footage if I where you. Some small details may get misinterpreted by the AI. It also loses a bit of the nostalgic look and feel of the old 8mm film. So keep a copy of the original that you can always come back to. Maybe one more fun AI thing to experiment with is adding inbetween frames/making the framerate higher.

One must recall that interpolation introduces artifacts, especially with non-linear methods and more so with AI. AI makes guesses and the detail it introduces is based on such a guess. If you use AI-upscaling software, I recommend you mention it in the description, to avoid causing confusion in case it introduces spurious details.

Ai will sometimes purposely throw in its obvious Ai details such as the Nose appearing taller , so the old footage is a timeless win for me

Well if it was me I would definitely make use of it. The old footage most of which can never be replicated is valuable especially if it was shot using good gear for the time. This tool simply adds value to it, as long as you keep an eye on how much "enhancing" is been done by the program, and keep it within realistic limits it will pay for itself many times over. Just the satisfaction alone of viewing footage that is now sharper, cleaner, clearer and steadier is priceless.

From film to digital copy to AI enhancement to upload to TH-cam to be compressed and streamed to my screen. The ai looked better but this really isn’t the best way to demonstrate how much better. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.

I personally prefer the original footage over the AI. AI upscaling makes everything look "muddy", even if the provided footage is great. Textures will look like a watercolor painting and look fake. When something has been upscaled using AI, it feels like it loses its soul. That's just my 2 cents though. Mileage may vary.

Not bad for what it is. The expensive digitalization is better but for just general footage this is more than adequate IMO

On my IPad the AI enhanced images were markedly better.

The thing is I remember the original scenes from the 8mm and Super 8 home movies. But the kids today weren’t around for the details. As such any enhancement is a plus for the generations going forward.

I find the vintage video charming, even with its imperfections. But I don't see any harm in the AI enhancement that you demo'd for us if youre itching to try it. I assume there are several levels of enhancement you can choose from during the process.

My only concern with AI and I'm pretty sure in the music industry you lose your copyright ability over something that you make with AI. I wonder if that's the same for video?

The side by side rolling was a little less fuzzy. It didn't wash out the "vintage" look ya get with the super 8 films. Go for it Bee!

I have been digitizing 8mm train films for over a decade, mostly with a Retro-8 scanner from MovieStuff that converted the movies. This might not be a terribly popular opinion given our gargantuan modern displays, but with how small the gauge of 8mm film is standard definition resolution is usually adequate for digital conversions of films. Instead of trying to get every last pixel of resolution out of conversions I have always focused on a workflow to remove film dirt and film grain, in addition to exposure and color correction, and fixing films that were warped. I have always used a text-based tool called Avisynth for most that filtering. To me that makes for a better visual experience rather than all that dirt and grain blown up to HD resolutions (I have never messed with 4K video).

I would say it cleaned up the video quite well. I wonder if this would work on my old VHS footage? Thanks for the heads up!

I didn’t see anything problematic with the AI. It was clearer, sharper, and… so…better. If the original quality is not great, the AI is likely to be a definite improvement. And with these old, hand held, poorly digitized films, the originals are rarely great. But I love them either way!! 😊👍👍

The footage used for side by side was shot at what appears to be Clybourn station on CNW Kenosha/Harvard Subdivision. The Beatrice Foods sign is a dead giveaway.

The AI footage did look smoother but I'm sure there's limitations as to how much it can make things look better. Some of the items being brought out for show are just too grainy or dark and it's doubtful if it can be fixed. Thanks for the comparison

I like it as an alternative to the cost of digitally remastering railroad film, if it was a very significant find perhaps I would want more money spent but for home video such as this AI looks great
