Two Old Men in the Woods (and Scott)
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 21 พ.ค. 2022
In the summer of 2021, Ronnie and Chris (brother-in-laws), realized that they both had a common interest in getting more involved in hiking. Not long after they began capturing their adventures for TH-cam, Chris began to add in his passion for ham (amateur) radio into the mix. Soon almost every adventure included either a Parks on the Air (POTA) or Summits on the Air (SOTA) activation. In additions to the activations, Chris has produced several ham radio how to videos covering amatuer radio basics, as well as more advanced concepts like ham radio antenna configuartions. Now Ronnie has joined in the ham radio fun, recently becoming a ham operator as well. Who knows what these two hams will get into next. One things is for sure, like our introduction video says - The only thing better than hiking OR ham radio is hiking AND ham radio!
TOP FIVE NEW HAM QUESTIONS (Ham Radio Basics for Beginners)
With Ronnie recently passing his General Class Amateur Radio Operator's test, he and Chris head out for a hike to talk about some points he is still confused about. Ham radio topics like "What's the difference between band and frequency?" "What's the difference between simplex and duplex?" "How do you classify HF, VHF and UHF?" "What do you mean by a half-wave antenna?" and "What's up with all these different connectors?" Lot's of new ham radio operators have lots of questions about this amazing hobby, these are just a few. We hope you enjoy - TOP FIVE NEW HAM QUESTIONS!

How did Ronnie manage to pass his license exam without knowing these basic things? I am a new licensed ham operator in Canada. Our basic exam is 100 questions and must be more involved that what the FCC requires for their amateur radio licensing.
I wouldn't say he didn't know them, but he was still confused about these key points. I was unaware of the differences in the testing between the US and Canada; our General class test is only 35 questions and the entire question bank is online. Many hams in the states really learn ham radio after passing their test through practical application.
@@twooldmeninthewoods Another difference is that your technician class has access to part of the 10m band right away. In Canada, to get access to the HF bands we have to get 80% or higher on the basic exam or be able to do Morse Code at 5 wpm. Otherwise we are limited to 30MHZ and above frequencies.
@@bwillan That's really interesting ... I knew there were major difference between here and Europe, but didn't realize the difference between the US and Canada.
Great video as normal. Great questions he had and your explanation(s) were spot on. KB4QCE
Thanks Paul, we really appreciate your ongoing interest and support!
Excellent video, educational and in the great outdoors. Thank you for sharing. Some of that information was a good refresher for me, thank you.
Thanks Janice ... glad you enjoyed it ... nothing like mixing ham radio with hiking!
Sick!
In a good way I hope? 😆
Good luck on your General Licence upgrade. Tnx for the lovely Video. 73 de Uncle Günter across the Pond 💯👍🙋♂
Thanks Gunter! Ronnie passed his General Class test - the next activation will have two operators!
fun stuff guys. Great location.. nice to see a qrp ssb activation. thx for sharing your day.. k0klb
Thanks for checking out the episode ... nothing like a little QRP in the wilderness!
woohoo! My first time being included into a YT video, haha. KE9BOS around the @6:15 mark. Thanks for the contact and I'm glad to be part of your activation!
Thanks for watching and thanks for pulling me out of the weeds! I remember that contact; you did not have a really good copy on me but you kept at it - thanks again.
Great to see you in activation, guys! Thanks for sharing! Hope to work you some day! 73 44 de Rumen/LZ2AF
Thanks for checking out our adventure. It would be amazing to get a DX QRP contact one day!
The next POTA/SOTA adventure will feature two operators - Ronnie passed his General Class Operator test!
Nice Job
Thanks … glad you enjoyed it!
Congratulations for getting your general class ham radio license. You are on a roll...
I guess we are now "Two Old Hams in the Woods" :-)
great activation!

Many thanks to the "Friends of Croft" Facebook group for posting the amazing picture of Stokes in his booth (with Roxie) shown at the end of this video. This is the way I will always remember my friend - WB4KST.
Fantastic work!!! TNX for sharing !
Thanks ... glad you enjoyed it!
Stokes was an assistant Priest at the Anglican Church I attended. He was a great man and he is missed. RIP Fr. Stokes
To the folks at Croft he was the best volunteer they ever had, to us he was WB4KST, and to you all he was Fr. Stokes - he had many roles and was loved by all.
@@twooldmeninthewoods. Fr. Stokes and I would often pass each other and mutter “diddy dum dum diddy”! Folks around ask “what are you talking about. I just responded “inside joke”. 73 Dale KD0M
Rest in Peace Stokes Smith! One of the best people I've ever met.
We couldn't agree more ... Stokes was one of the good ones.
Great video! Congratulations for getting the Ham radio license.
Thanks ... can't wait to activate a summit with the Carolinas newest ham!
What's the wattage of that Yeti power bank you are using? That is a different setup using a powerbank. Most use a LiFePO4 battery.
It is a 200W unit called the 200X. I happened to have it at home and carried it with me that day since I wouldn't be hiking to the activation site like we normally do. I have considered getting a stand-alone lipo battery like you mentioned, but so far the upgraded internal battery for the FT-818 has served me well.
Never know who you will see on TH-cam. Shout out to old friends and school mates Ronnie and Terrell!
This is Shirlee Bruner
What a great day that was! The amazing scenery that is the Bill Kimbal trail and listening to Ronnie and Terrell relive the good old days :-)
"HF style connector"? You mean SO-239/PL-259? This connector is used on VHF and UHF radios as well, although it's not ideal for higher frequencies like UHF.
Thanks for the feedback. Although you are correct in the specfic name for that style connector, it is also not uncommon to refer to that male/female pair as HF style connectors. My struggle is I can never remember which one is which (is the 239 male or female) so I just call them HF connectors. Isn't it interesting that we don't use different general numbers when we describe BNCs, SMAs or N-Types (obviously they have different part numbers) but we do when we descirbe what I call HF connectors.
The pack looks great. Where do you source it?
Do a search on eBay for "Brown bag + Side plate Rails Bracket Stand yaesu FT-817ND yaesu ft-818nd ft818" and it it will pop up ... Only $69 and it comes with the side rails which I forgot to mention in the video.
Excellent
Thanks Frank ... glad you enjoyed it!
Love it! Hiking and ham radio! I've recently felt the bug (again) myself and plan to start doing some POTA/SOTA. It's great that you have family to enjoy the fun! Like the other commenter, I'll sub from all of my YT channels. 73
Thanks Ron ... just subbed your channel as well!
Great video! Just subbed, saw your comment on a thread on the POTA Facebook group.
Thanks Rick ... the POTA FB group is definitely my favorite ... so cool to see all the activation reports from all over the US and the world!
So cool. Thank you!
You are quite welcome ... glad you enjoyed it ... it is an amazing place!
Great work , Chris! The camera work was very good and the amount of research you must have done is daunting.
Thanks Paul ... it was a lot of fun capturing all the footage and learning more about this amazing place!
Thank you for creating this video explaining the differences between SOTA and POTA. Videos like this are very helpful in educating people about the differences between these two programs. 73, 9M2PJU 9M2 SOTA Association Manager.
Thanks for the kind words and your work supporting the SOTA program ... 73
They add new summits every once in a while. Just last September, where I'm at, W6/SC, they added W6/SC-461, Chiquito Peak. Not often, but it does happen. Great video. 73 de W6OBB
Thanks … glad you enjoyed it … never thought about them resurveying and the list changing … another commenter said he lost the peak near his house … bummer
@@twooldmeninthewoods I'm surprised they haven 't removed some in my area. One is an area that it's illegal to climb. It's Morro Rock. I've asked them about it and they said they've decided to leave most of them just in case in ever changes. There's another one that is on private property, and there's videos on TH-cam of the owner or employees chasing people off with shotguns. LOL!
Fantastic work!
Thanks … it was fun looking back through the old footage … now were ready for more QRP adventures!
Great video Chris. You done good
Thanks Paul … when’s your next activation?
Great video, and nice to see an 818 in the field...my 817 says hi 😊 Good to know the difference in qualifying an activation, although I'm familiar with the SOTA scheme, I think there's a POTA eligible park near me so will have to check it out. One small thing regarding SOTA summits...very occasionally, a summit which is really close to the 150 meters prominence can change its status, usually as a result of a correction in a new survey. I only know about this because it happened to what was my nearest qualifying summit, which was a bit of a bummer as there used to be summits two within about 50 miles of me and now there's only one. 73 from the flatlands of South East Kent, England, (some bits of it are below sea level) Simon G0CIQ.
Thanks so much for checking out the episode and for the note on summit classifications! I absolutely LOVE my FT-818!
I really enjoyed your video. I want to hike this loop!

Great to talk to you as well … definitely on a future collaboration!
Great video, can't believe ive never heard of croft state park!
Thanks Bright ... Croft is the best kept secret in Spartanburg County!
It is a beautiful place, Chris. Our church used it last week for camping while working on Grace Presbyterian in Spartanburg.
This was filmed last week! Hope you all had a productive week helping out Grace Presbyterian. Thanks for your ongoing support and interest.
I think you both have it covered. I would suggest some sort of fire starter just in case & as everyone else suggested, a wilderness first day kit & the knowledge of how to use it just in case. You got it covered for comms if you are carrying your handheld. Of course, the more you carry, it may require a slightly bigger pack. It is always better to play it safe. What are the packs you are carrying now. All the parks you are visiting are not far from me. I am in Landrum. Have fun and continue on your hiking journey. Love the adventures.
Thanks again Janice for your continued interest in our adventures … you’re definitely right about the fire starter … we should probably do an updated version of this video … what we carry with us has changed a good bit since we made this episode.
Such a lovely episode my friend, one big like from me!!
Thanks for the kind words and the like!
Beautiful and interesting. Thank you for creating that video, certainly a part of history that should and hopefully never be lost. Thank you again for the history lesson.
Thanks again Janice … we really poured a lot into that episode … it is an amazing place with amazing history that needs to be preserved!
I really loved this video. Great job and great puppy!
Thanks Owen - it was just one of those simple days at our favorite place.
Very nice, thank you for sharing that piece of history. Looks like a beautiful area to hike. Maybe one day I will make it there. History is always a good thing to know. Thank You.

You was standing on my grandparents Graves at Antioch. They were the original owners Murph of Whitestone Hall plantation (croft state park). Those small grave markers down further are slaves
Thanks for watching ... Our hope is that our tribute to your ancestors, and all the other families that lost so much in the history of Croft, was fitting and honorable.
Nice work 👍 You've got my sub! Firelookouts are some of my favorite SOTA/POTA spots.
Thanks for the kind words ... we really appreciate your support ... I need to look for more iconic places like that to activate from!
Nice video. US-2909 is my home park when I visit my daughter. Have to get to the fire house part next time I'm in Greenville. POTA on de KC2BPP
Thanks! The old fire tower residence is not a bad hike if you park in the top parking lot. We hiked up all the way from Lake Placid for this activation, and made a whole day journey out of it.
Thanks for sharing the nice adventure. I was finding my EFHW not up to the mark on 40m and started using a fan dipole for 40/10m. Now I have put it back in a slanting V and am able to work an occasional DX on 15m and long distance VUs on 20m. 73 de Jon, VU2JO
Thanks Jon … I need to try a fan dipole … a friend of mine from my local club swears by them … I just wonder how difficult they would be to setup out in the woods
