Sugar motor experiments (attempt to make black smoke from a sugar motor)
In this video I try a few different things to make black smoke from sugar motors. I didn't achieve my goal, but wanted to document the process.

      I have, and the motor usually doesn't light just with an electric match. You skip the step of wrapping and soldering the nichrome and just dip an electric match into the propellant.

    these are for bigger homemade motors? will just the wire be enough to ignite an A B C D Estes engine? or do you need the flashy stuff?

      For smaller motors I would just use an e-match like you can get at electricmatch.com.

    dumb question. i have lots. do you stuff that ignitor all the up the motor or can it be more towards the end or does it matter

    • @MinuteRockets
      @MinuteRockets 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It should be at the top so the flame front can move down toward the nozzle and light the rest of the grains. If the igniter is further down it could light the bottom grain and have trouble since the flame front will be trying to move up against the flow out of the nozzle.

    I did all the steps exactly the same, but my propellant gets extremely wet just an hour after it comes out of the fire, and as time goes on it gets worse.

    • @MinuteRockets
      @MinuteRockets 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm not sure what could be causing that. If it is really humid where you are you might consider putting the propellant in a sealed container with a desiccant to keep it dry.

    Hi , I found your tutorial very informative and useful to me because i am also developing the same for the first time, I have one doubt and concern about the motor that Is it safe to use multiple motor grains (in your case it is four), the gap between them may result in sudden increasing in fuel surface area and rapid burnout and drastic pressure increase. Do you face same issues or it worked fine ? What do you prefer , single grain long motor of multiple grain motor like yours ?

    You can CNC a negative CPC in aluminum and then nickel plate it. Pops off with an air hose. Optiform makes them. You can get many out of one mandrel. I’ve made some that are 3” diameter and 400 mm long. Diamond turned an aluminum mandrel in aluminum and NASA electroformed them in a thin shell of nickel. But they used liquid nitrogen to release the nickel shell.

    Have you ever tried a profile for a nozzle that’s based on a CPC (Compound Parabolic Concentrator, or Winston Cone). These are used in optical systems to take 2 pi steradians input on the small end and convert it to +- theta on the large end. Theta being dependent on the design of the CPC. So if the thrust coming out of the rocket (before nozzle) is 2 pi steradians, you can design a CPC nozzle that converts that thrust to a smaller angle, effectively converting the sideways thrust more downwards. Just a thought. I like seeing how things from one field of science can be used in another field. A straight cone is ok, but a CPC would eliminate the need for the converging part of the nozzle before the pinch and reduce the overall length. I’ll try to find some CPC design references for you. Silicon powder, potassium perchlorate, trace of sulfur, some kind of binder. Silicon burns, becomes shower of molten glass bits. Glass is quite sticky when white hot, clings to fuel grain, ignition rarely fails.

    The candy propellant produces white smoke so you will never be able to produce a black smoke propellant that is usable in a motor I dont think. Best you can hope for is grey smoke. Also I think you miscalculated the addition if the glitter. You want that 10% to be part of the fuel load. For example if you use 25% fuel in your propellant mix then you need 75% kno3, 15% sorb and 10% glitter. the proppellant should burn cleaner with less residue. Also, the conditions under which the propellant is burning inside the combustion chamber are very different from those of the test strips. Not sure what useful info you will get from test strips.
