She said sge was brought up with her granny in Shettleston road. I don't think so. If you believe that you believe in santa
Wonder where they are all now
The houses shown in Pinmore Street, werw actually part of Renfrew County, and not part of Glasgow City. I went live in Pinmore Street in 1959, and I am very familiar with the area
@@alexanderyoung1167 Nitshill became part of Glasgow in 1926. I am very familiar with the history of the area. Prior to that it was part of Renfrew.
18:31 Does anyone remember Charles McNeil Ltd. at Kinning Park? Engineering
Very good documentary
7:19 i hadn't realised it was forcing people out into the new housing schemes that had kind of led to trams being replaced by buses
Anybody else note the brief London street scene around 19min 31sec?
In todays “Green and Environmentally Friendly” culture, I always wonder who’s Bright idea it was to do away with the trams ? GCC no doubt showing its clear and progressive vision of the future (just as it still does today)!
"The Empire Theatre, loved by many English comedians"😂😂
Thank you Alex for the video. I'm in my seventies. I remember too many of the places you mention in this video. I left school in '69 and my first job was in York st. Both sides of the clyde were ships as far as the eye could see. I also remember seeing crowds of people being at the arrival of the first electric train at Garrowhill station. I was born in Barlanark, but my family came from Petershill.
it looks like a german world war 2 prison camp! shocking!
Ma wee granny marry Mullen
TBH the buildings looked nicer than the horrible modern houses they have built in place now and the kids all looked really nice and very well dressed!
My father’s father worked as a tram conductor out of the Merkland Street garage. He was a big strong Suffolk man and he found some of the Glasgow street names difficult to say. He died sometime before I was born, I never knew him.
Mr. Glass, thank you very much for this wonderful film. Your film brought back a whole wealth of memories, some wonderful, others not so much!. Regardless is not life like that for us all, memories of extraordinarily wonderful times, to those of the most profound sadness, BUT, after viewing your film one can but be, ebulliently happy. No offence intended (re your age) But, did you film any of the footage yourself? I simply ask , for your enthusiasm for this work and your kind posts to folks in the comment section makes me inquire. *Finally!* regarding the older 'open back' buses where the narrator (i assumed you) where we are told that those vehicles in particular were freezing in the winter (for me that means the majority of Glasgow weather these days!). But anyway, just a little information about the same. A fair while before they were replaced by 'OMO' vehicles, the Glasgow Corporation Engineering Bus Works department they, came up with a genius and elegant solution; AND, most importantly T'was super successful, to the point Clippies and customers would ask for it to be toned down!!! Too much heat in the bottom deck of a permanently open rear entranced Glasgow Bus; Crikey who would have thought!!
@@Fyodor48 I can’t take any credit for the production or narration of this film. I only take responsibility for uploading it to TH-cam for others to enjoy. Thank you very much for you kind words. It makes it worthwhile to know that someone has enjoyed it so much and that it brings back memories. I have uploaded a few films here and most are old and not made by me. I do enjoy making videos and sometimes share footage I have taken but these are never of the quality of those older films.
The event of the decade. If you went and liked it, I like you.

44 years later and Glasgow is still a dump.
When I was first in Glasgow and saw this it was closed from above so I thought people used to squat and pee in public lol
Thanks Alex i spotted my Dads shop R.E. Wright & Son at the Glasgow Cross I've just shown my dad who is now 100 years old, he said it brought back such good memories.

Sorry for the loss of your friend.
Thanks Alex for this brilliant trip down memory lane, as an old Glasgow cabbie I must correct you on the Oswald street bridge, it's actually called the King George V bridge or KG5 in taxi parlance.
I love these documentaries, Brought back good memories as my aunt Mary and uncle George and my cousins are in the program❤
I loved Toonheid, stayed in weavers st 1966 till 74 then my old house was demolished, the destiny church stands there now
Its a game of chess for power, money and resources. Corporate greed and corruption.

PITY THE TEACHING IS SO WOKE, THE KIDS ARE BEING GROOMED, I WORKED IN MANY SCHOOLS IN GLASGOW, THEY ARE ALSO BEING TAUGHT FAULSE HISTORY, EVERY YEAR THEY BRING IN BOOKS THAT IS TEACHING FAULSE INFORMATION, AND IDEOLOGY, THIS IS BEING PUSHED, KIDS CAN NOW BE SITTING BESIDE A LION, OR A CAT, OR RABBIT, PARENTS NEED TO ASK WHAT BOOKS AND WHAT THEY ARE BEING TOUGHT.
STUMPS ?? HIS HORSE
Brilliant
Pollok veteran. So much of this resonates with my early life. Can't help feeling angry at points, both for how they are discussing the area and the fact that this was common all over large parts of Glasgow. I remember the day I promised myself I'd get out somehow because I felt the scheme would kill me. I'd got my head kicked in at the ice cream van by a guy because I was from a catholic ptimary, I'd seen my aunty getting a tanking in our house because she'd forgot something from the chippy and then on the way up to the shop that night to get a bottle of cream soda, I'd seen this local stoner, Chris (a lovely guy, no shoes on) get stabbed up and down, right in front of me because he owed someone £20. I genuinely felt trapped and frightened. Couldn't rely on my own family. It was horrendous. It was 1983. I was 9. I have my wife and two beautiful sons now. I love just having simple things. It took me 26 years to shake off feeling like I didnt deserve anything. Thanks for uploading Alex. Truly, thank you. It's really really relevant in these times. Love and respect sir.
I LOVED THEM.COUSE THYE LOVED ANIMALES YOU GO BOYS THANK YOUS ❤
Great video.Thanku🌸👍
Try to remember that this was the time of the Cold War and a lot of people in the 1970s and 80s thought World War III was coming around the corner any minute so social housing wasn't built to last if a thermonuclear explosion was expected. I mean these buildings were really just tombs for the radiation sick and dying when the war happened and so planners didn't take into account deficiencies in the design and performance. You were put there to die quickly and not live long and happily as you might have thought.
People were uprooted in every town from the slums to high rise blocks and new council estates
They are looking at potential clients as if they are animals in a zoo.

So many memories i miss my mum and dad ❤

Excellent film. The overall wholesale destruction of the old Glasgow is sad to see. The old tenements were I think fairly sound building and could have been refurbished and communities maintained .
Of course they were, still so many standing today, disgusting the amount of perfectly good homes that were bulldozed.
Origin of the word bundy was it a clock. ??

I lived in Yoker latterly Partick and knew my local area reasonably well, but the 63 Auchenshuggle and 64 Dalmuir West referred to places that may as well have been at the other end of the Milky Way for all I knew. I didn't even know we were in the west of the city and north of the river 😳
