Interesting dance, worth watching.

We were in Amsterdam in mid June and the city was already full of tourists. However on a Friday at about 10 AM we were able to buy tickets in a short line and then just walk into the Rijksmuseum. If you like ship models it has a fabulous collection plus of course all the famous paintings it's known for. There were big crowds in front of the famous ones. Years ago the East India museum was interesting; out of the first Dutch fleet to the East Indies less than 25 % made it back to home. The Van Gogh especially and Anne Frank museums sell out early. We stayed at the nice Swissotel close to the central Dam Square. It (and neighboring ones) was a manageable walk from the Central Train Station (you will need you train ticket to get through the exit turnstiles at the station). Hotel rooms seem to be in short supply in Amsterdam. We ate the first night at an Indonesian restaurant Sampurna which was very good (on the way I got lost and we were helped out by a very nice Dutch lady who pulled out her cellphone to help). Amsterdam used to famous for its very popular Indonesian food but now it's less popular and the city is full of places with foreign cuisines, even Mexican. You may have trouble finding good Dutch food. The tram system is a handy way to get around town. You can buy tickets for a day or more; you can buy tickets at machines at the stops.

I loved the pictures of the fruits and vegetables and sausages and meats - whenever I visit a new city I always try to visit the market; it says so much about local life and customs. I also enjoyed the lovely Madonna and Child in the church in Bruges and the lovely swans - and surrounding buildings - in the lake in Ghent. I had never heard of the picture of the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb and was inspired to look it up.

Not in the pictures are the beautiful paintings in the Groeningemuseum (including a van Eyck) and the Memling paintings in the Sint-Janshospital Museum, especially the wonderful reliquary of St. Ursula. The Van Eyck altarpiece in St. Bavo is wonderful too (probably there are pictures online). His powers of vision were so miraculous that in one of his paintings with a rock face in the background paleontologists are able to identify the fossils in the rock that he painted. Thames and Hudson has published a lavish book on van Eyck on the occasion of a show of his work. A lot of restaurants in Bruges are closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays so be prepared.

What a charming visit with lovely piano accompaniment. When our daughter was in high school she had to write a paper based on an imagined tour of another country. She chose Austria and I remember that she wrote enchantingly about the charms of Strasbourg! This video fits my memories of that paper.

For great views of the trains we rode you can find cab ride (from the engineer's seat) videos on TH-cam, Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg and Chur to St. Moritz (winter trips too).

Strasbourg is a very pretty city with its old buildings grouped around the the river and canal channels (called Petite France) and the old buildings around its wonderful cathedral. It's in between German and French cultures. It 's in the province of Alsace, one of France's nicest, with lots of beautiful villages, great food and wine, and many art treasures, especially in the town of Colmar. People were friendly and helpful.

A nice trip. Unfortunately the impressive Susten, Grimsel and Furka Passes were still closed from winter snowfall. Lots of people around Grindelwald but the Engadine (St. Moritz and vicinity) was pretty quiet without much car traffic. Wonderful food (and frequently too much).

This lovely video grasped the essence of this part of Switzerland and many views reminded me of my own trip there. Shirley's spritely composition was a perfect accompaniment!

What fun! I especially enjoyed the spritely music, the baby giraffe ,the pictures that scrolled up and down the legs of the amazing Okapi and learning that Native Americans called Condors "Thunderbirds." The music was like the rhythm of visitors driving/riding along and happily gazing at the wonders of the park.
