He’s been a great little dog. He doesn’t range too far from me anymore but is still good to make a retrieve and honor a point. Still very spry for a 12 year old dog. Makes me happy to still see him on the hunt. Thanks Scott.

Hey Scott. Yes, doing well. Thank you. I haven’t made a video for awhile. I guess I kind of ran out of ideas for new and different material. Mack is doing great. He will be 11 in February. He hasn’t missed a hunt yet this season. He has had a few points on chukar and still makes most of the retrieves. Did really well on a Montana hunt for pheasants, sharp tail and Huns. He has tapped into the fountain of youth. Still pretty spry for an old dog. I post occasionally to Instagram still. You can look me up there. busting_coveys

Thank you. Hopefully we have a better hatch this spring than last so you have some birds to hunt. It’s been terribly dry and has taken a toll on bird numbers.

Thank you. He is has ton of potential. Still makes some bonehead mistakes but little by little those mistakes happen less and less. He’s a pretty good bird dog. I come home happier and happier with him each time we go out. He shredded his caudal cruciate ligament this last spring. There was some doubt he’d ever hunt again. He had injured the cranial ligament as well. The fact that he’s back running as well as he does is enough to make me happy regardless of the outcome of the hunt.

Thank you. He is a great guy and I am fortunate to have him as a friend. I told him “I don’t know how to repay you.” He said that I can come pull him out when he gets stuck somewhere. That’s what friends do.

I was trying to turn around so I’d be pointing down hill. I wanted to be able to leave without (ironically) getting stuck. My back end started to slip and once it did everything I tried just made it worse. Once I ended up straddling the boulder I knew I was in trouble. That double was set up perfectly. As you could see on the bird I missed I’m not really that good of a shot. 😂 I got lucky on the first two. Thanks for the comment Ben. I’m glad you like the videos.

@@BustingCoveys My other thought was just that, you were turning around. My rig is only front wheel drive so I do the same thing so I can just mash the gas on the way out once it’s back above freezing. And trust me, getting a double means you can shoot. That other bird got up quick and then started diving right away. Those are tough shots.

He is a good boy for sure. He’ll be 9 years old on February 17. It’s hard to believe he’s that old. He sure doesn’t show it. Thanks for the compliment on my shooting. I get lucky every once in awhile. I hope you’re doing well Scott.

Yes it was awesome. He is known as the “hero” around my house and has been for years. He is a good man for sure. Cell service was spotty at best. Coincidentally the one spot I could place a call was right there at my truck. As soon as I started hiking I lost service again. Thanks for commenting here. I have enjoyed our few interactions over on CB as well.

He can frustrate me and amaze me all in the same day. I suppose that is the case for all dogs. He has an outstanding nose (the best in a dog I have ever had), points very well and retrieves. He hunts dead great. Very rarely do I lose a bird because he either marks it or can find if he didn’t. He is gentle a very loving. Loyal to a fault. I say that because he is so attached to me. Sometimes I think knowing where I am at is more important to him than the birds. I think he gets a little separation anxiety. He hunts very close even by breed standards. Too close. He doesn’t range far however we still managed to find lots of birds and had success even before I got my setter. I love him all, the good and the bad. I’ve hunted over two other FBs also. They did not have the anxiety issues my dog has. The one was the best all around dog I have ever seen. He did it all and he did it well.

@@BustingCoveys Thanks for your thoughts on these dogs. There doesn't seem to be many breeders of the French variety in Utah, lots of the American though. I'd be willing to travel though. Really like the tri-color dogs too!

Mine came out of Plum Creek Kennels in South Dakota. They shipped him to me. I think they have since moved their kennel to Texas. May even be under new ownership.

That camera looks pretty cool. I might have to start saving up.

Thanks Matt. I’m glad you liked it. I shoot a Benelli Ultralight in a 20ga. I love it. It is a sweet little shotgun and is perfect for packing around on the chukar hills. If you don’t want to pay the Benelli price Franchi makes a very nice auto loader as well. I bought my son the Franchi Affinity this last Christmas and he has been very happy with it. The action seems identical to mine at about 1/2 the price. It’s good quality. Utah has really good habitat for chukar. I don’t know where to look for birds near St. George. If you were to explore west of I-15 though from Cedar City to Idaho you could find them. Look for the steep, rocky, grass covered slopes. Hunt along the ridge lines and high open faces. They’re there. Put a few miles on your boots and you’re bound to run into them.

Thank you. He has been a very good dog. Like with any dog there are some things I wish he did better but there also some things he does exceptionally well. The good far outweighs the bad. I have never had a more loyal dog I can tell you that. He’ll be 9 in February. I am hoping to get a few more years out of him yet. He’s still pretty spry.
