For Travel's Sake
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 ธ.ค. 2011
We are an American couple who wanted to follow our dream of a different kind of life. So we sold our house and moved into our 37-foot fifth wheel RV camper AND our 38-foot sailboat. When autumn came to our home waters, we put the sailboat "on the hard" and set off in our RV to travel full time.
We want to share this journey with you and inspire you to follow your own dreams and adventures!
We hope you like what we do.
Thanks for watching!

2021 FFI Women Connect | Driftless Rendezvous 4K
This fall, our travels took us back to our home waters in the beautiful Driftless Area of southeastern Minnesota for a gathering of women fly anglers taking part in the 2021 Driftless Rendezvous. Organized by the Fly Fishers International (FFI) Women Connect, the Driftless Rendezvous attracted women fly anglers from across the United States who came to the pretty little town of Lanesboro, Minnesota, in the heart of the Driftless and on the banks of the Root River, to connect, learn and, of course, to fly fish. For more information on FFI Women Connect, visit:

Back on the Water | Sailing Life on the Mississippi
มุมมอง 1.8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
What could be sweeter than to be back on the waters of the Big Muddy, the mighty Mississippi River, on our 38-foot sailboat, Ampersand? At roughly 22 miles long and just shy of two miles wide, Lake Pepin is roughly comparable in size to Scotland's famous Loch Ness. Lake Pepin is steeped in history. A relic of the ice age, it's the largest natural lake on the entire length of the Mississippi. St...
Ice Out | Spring on the Mississippi River 4K
มุมมอง 1.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
After a year of pandemic and quarantine, spring feels to us even more like a rebirth. (If you agree, let us know in the comments below!) S/V Ampersand, our 38-foot sailboat, spent the winter on her cradle, wrapped in blue plastic. Nearby, the vast expanse of Lake Pepin, the largest natural lake on the entire Mississippi River, was locked in ice. At roughly 22 miles long and just shy of two mile...

In this, ...
Apache Trail: CLOSED! | For Travel's Sake: Episode 29
มุมมอง 15K4 ปีที่แล้ว
In 2018, Cat and I drove the Apache Trail through the Superstition Mountains in Arizona, from the Roosevelt Dam to Apache Junction. The video we made of that drive has been viewed by thousands of people interested in driving the Trail themselves. But now, the Apache Trail is blocked by barricades and No Trespassing signs. So what happened to the Apache Trail? Why is it closed? And when will it ...

One-Armed Welder Builds Us a (Sailboat) Cradle
มุมมอง 1.5K5 ปีที่แล้ว
As our sailing season was drawing to a close and we were planning our winter road trip, we learned that our new marina wouldn't store our sailboat on jackstands the way our old marina did. So we had to find someone to build us a new steel cradle. The marina recommended a local welder who'd been building sailboat cradles (and doing lots of other welding projects) for decades. He turned out to be...
Tornado in the Marina!

Many of you heard that our marina on the Mississippi River in Lake City, Minnesota, took a direct hit from a tornado while we were traveling in South Dakota. We wanted to post a short video to update everyone on what happened and how our sailboat, Ampersand, faired in the storm. Spoiler alert: We and our sailboat are fine! Thanks to everyone who reached out to check on us and make sure we were ...
One Driftless Trout

Thank you for this video!
It just reopened...
@@ZeroPointZap So great!
The repair is complete now and the trail is open fully once again.
We’re so thrilled! But we haven’t had a chance to drive it yet! Can’t wait!
@@ForTravelsSake I’m going Monday to check out the repair and drive the entire length after five years.
Let us know how it looks. I’m sure there will be lots of people making the drive!
@@ForTravelsSake drove it today. The repaired section is better than before the rock slide. Also, there are several sections before the Roosevelt Dam that are now newly paved.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing! We can’t wait to drive it!
My dad drove that in a Lincoln Town Car towing a C22 sailboat.
Spent my childhood with Dad's tri-hull towing behind a Pontiac Le Mans drivin' this most of the time to Apache Lake. Been 40 years now,. and amazed how really familiar it still lokks to me. Thanks for the post.
I remember driving the trail and enjoying the colorful rock formations along the way and pulling off the road to just lay on the hood of my car looking up at the sky. A colleague recently advised me to stop overworking and take a vacation. I wish I could vacation here again. 👍😎
Couple weeks ago I was at the closure .. got there in the afternoon and as night came on everybody left .. but me! There were no signs saying no camping so I camped there for the night .. nice having a pit toilet close. 🤠
Believe it or not: That´s the end of the road!
I spent several years in Tempe as a ASU ALCP student and then I got my masters degree at the Western International University and then I worked at SPRINT ROC for two years and I cycled many times from 13th street and Normal (Tempe) to Lake Canyon......I loved Superstition Mountain.....and Tortilla Flat... those were best years of my life.....(Fei Wen, if you read this.....big hug)
Exciting news from the Arizona Department of Transportation! azdot.gov/good-news-those-drawn-apache-trail?fbclid=IwAR0Wps2HUHzF6ZdwxAXo1xWEjeXFowGuxYGQds0I4D6JoAjkNLlozaqufGw_aem_AfH01KRi81WnOsxDWdgtS_dE7MFa8oYJ4kkA6yISj9kv17Bjeerk3MSwkoPxSkr-G4Y
Here’s an exciting update from the Arizona DOT! azdot.gov/good-news-those-drawn-apache-trail?fbclid=IwAR32z2_539khRugleywpE1Tan7RZBQLRd2xQqoVt20rDPGAbRl8_73nE40E_aem_AfH4-Oykpt0IJYv87sYbbm2L3oqhT2SaC_x6sIID7eO89xEuRb6d8kxgI-SE156r1vs
Goodness this brings back memories ! We have been RVing in America for quite a few years (we are a couple of Brits) rather foolishly we were told this was passable with an RV and we did drive from Tortillas Flats to the Dam - wouldn’t recommend it in a 27 foot rental RV but it truly is amazing and slightly terrifying in equal measures ! We also now know what a grey road is on Rand McNally and sidewalk means pavement in England - hence pavement runs out didn’t bother us to start with ! One of our favourite memories from our RV travels - and we’ve done the whole of the Rockies too !!
Great memories! We saw some RVs on the Apache Trail back when it was open. It could be a harrowing drive in our truck or even our Jeep, but you’re very brave (and foolish! 😱) to have done as you did! Thanks for sharing and happy new year! Safe travels wherever you roam! ❤️
Has it reopened?
Sadly, it’s not. But there is some indication that the ADOT is studying the feasibility of reopening the road someday. Thanks for watching!
@@ForTravelsSake can I walk it?
@@derrickwillie4449 Good question! For a long time there were signs prohibiting trespassing. But many people simply walked around the gate or climbed over it. We even saw people riding mountain bikes down the trail. Last we checked, it’s still off limits due to the danger of rock falls. But it’s worth driving out past Tortilla Flat to the overlook. Check the signs and obey the posted rules. Safe travels!
@@ForTravelsSake I’ll take my bike and let you know
Do you need a 4x4 at any time or is a 2WD with high clearance and good tires all you need? Awesome video!!
When the Trail was open, people drove it in all kinds of vehicles. It didn’t require 4WD or high clearance, though it helped to have good shocks! Unfortunately, the Apache Trail is currently closed (see our video about that), due to flood damage and rock slides. But we hear the ADOT is studying the feasibility of reopening the road. Stay tuned! And thanks for watching!
Watched this video several times.. you did a beautiful job on it, my question is after all this time, do you know if the Apache trail is open again?
Unfortunately, it’s still closed, but there are indications that ADOT is working on feasibility studies. It makes take a decade, but we are optimistic that it will be open again someday. Thanks for watching! And thank you for the kind words. Safe travels to you! 💚
@@ForTravelsSake Thank you for your quick response, I'd love to travel that road one day, if the government doesn't screw it up... hope to see some more videos soon.. Take care my friend and God Bless...
I spent 4yrs in Arizona when in the USAF. Lived at the base of the Superstitions Mountains. I'll always love that Mountains.
I like my 03 tj and 95 yj
Fucking A now that’s a video!
Spent alot of years deer hunting around Apache lake and camping at Burnt corrals miss going there via fish Creek hill
Do you all still have this?
Love it over there. Best area
I used to go back in the now closed area in the 90’s with my family, there was a long pit mine there south of horse mesa dam that my grandpa and his friends used to search in, I would love to get back there with my kids now, but seems like they don’t want to open it back up…kind of fishy to me
My Dad, the insistent explorer, drove my mom & I to Apache Trail in 1960 or 1961, when I was 10 years old, along the dusty dirt road in our 1956 Pontiac! The main purpose was to visit the site of the James Stewart movie “The Mountain Road” filmed along the Apache Trail. Fond memories!
Wow! It must have been quite an adventure for a 10 year old! Thanks for watching!
Best video of Lake Pepin ever viewed!! Captures the beauty and mystery of the area! Thanks John.
Thanks, Steve! See you on the water! ⛵️
I've driven on the trail over a hundred times day and night since 1971. I used to camp out at apache lake and Roosevelt lake for many years, been through snow storms, seen many flash floods but it's ever lasting beauty never changes.
Well that sure takes me back. My ex and I rented a 1996 (perhaps a 95) Jeep Wrangler to drive around the big island of Hawaii during our honeymoon. Tremendous fun, but I found to my chagrin that when we seriously got off road the really big 4x4 pickup trucks and Chevy Suburban type vehicles had it far easier than we did. Size matters.
If you use a damn net, the fish will be much better off!
That is so true! Cat has a very nice net that she wasn’t carrying that morning! Thanks for the reminder. And thanks for watching! 🙏🏼🎣
This doesn't look like a good idea in a passenger car
Very true! But unfortunately the road is currently closed. We tell that story in another video. But thanks for watching and commenting! Safe travels to you!
Hey hope all is well with you and your family.. Are you planning on making new videos any time soon... Sure miss your travels.. hope all is well in your part of the world...
Hi Gary! Great to hear from you! We’ve been off the road for a while, spending time with and caring for family. We’ve also been working on other projects, including writing two new books that you’ll hear more about soon. Thanks for reaching out! Be well! ❤️
I know that feeling well.. my mom will be 91 in April and I have to do most of her shopping and errands for her and between her stuff and mine it wears me out... Well hope to see some videos soon, and take care and God Bless...
Nice vid. I live in Alaska, but spent a rare winter down outside of Payson and discovered the Apache Trail. Camped out a few times along the Trail and really fell in love with that old country. Good Karma, and kindred spirits inhabit that place. It is very special.
We certainly feel the same way. Very special place indeed. Thanks for watching and for sharing your memories. ❤️
Thanks for the recap, bummed I didn't know about it. Did you launch your drone from the overlook?
Hi Wendy, yes we launched from the road by the overlook. It’s beautiful country. We lost contact with the drone briefly because of the distance.
How can we fix this?!
We believe the ADOT will eventually do the right thing and restore this historic trail. Fingers crossed! Thanks for watching!
Gotta Love The Driftless! Amazing Footage
Thank you! 🙏🏼
Camping in Fish creek canyon in the rain. Most beautiful site ever. Waterfalls everywhere .!!!! A little risky but calculated
Sounds amazing!
Fix the damn road!!!
Rumor has it the ADOT has allocated money to study the feasibility of reopening the Apache Trail. Stay tuned!
Lucky enough to have driven the trail in 2009
I miss your videos!
Awwww ❤️ We miss making them for you, too! We’ve been writing books and doing some client videos. But stay tuned, there’s more coming soon. It’s so nice to hear from you! ❤️
Those roads are crazy. Let's use some of Bidens new printed money for strong guard rails.
Drove this route more than once circa 2015 in my 2008 smart car..love this road and its really sad to see this...I see also they are paving the lower portion
azdot.gov/good-news-those-drawn-apache-trail
i used to camp just a couple miles from apache junction , but THAT was closed down maybe 20 yrs. ago.......since then , i 've crawled over the hills to camp just above tortilla flat , one of my usual go to places.not too many people , and spectacularly beautiful......i've done many paintings up there............only issue is the target practice guys can be a bit loose
It’s definitely spectacular! And we agree with you on the target practice! Thanks for watching! 🙏🏼
3:11 The Ingram Barge Company used to be on the east bank of the Cumberland River in Nashville, TN. It moved once the Tennessee Titans Football team bought the land and built their stadium in ~1997.
Great video. Thank you for sharing
Thanks for the kind words! And thanks for watching! ❤️
How much mast clearance on the bridges.
That’s always the big question! It depends a bit on the river levels, but at normal pool you can expect at least 55’. The bridge operator won’t tell you what the clearance is. He or she will just ask you what you need. It’s a little scary! ⛵️
Visited this back in the mid 1970’s. It was our first trip to AZ. An amazing journey. After family moved here in 86 se did several runs. Always an amazing day trip to Roosevelt Lake. Since the closure been on the western portion to the closure. So sad. What a wonderful 4x4 road this was. A piece of AZ history.
We agree! We miss driving that wonderful historic old trail. Thanks for watching! Safe travels!
the best time to be at fish Creek hill is when it's raining. more water falls than you can count
There is a lot of conversation about this now and we are working on expanding awareness. Your video is quite incredible! Would you mind if we share in our socials to save the trail?
Thanks for your kind words. 🙏🏼 Definitely feel free to share. We would love to help save this amazing and historic old trail any way we can. ❤️
I drove that trail 3 dozen times or more in the late 80's.
Back 1988 or so I was driving in Mesa and saw an oil change special. So I stopped. I pop the hood of my F-150 4x4 and the tech says "You'll be looking for a new truck soon!" I said why? He says "No A/C!" I laughed. I said I've lived here for 3 years. So What? I used to drive the whole fish creek thing Sunday drive. Fun trying to watch two RV's one going up the other down at that choke point on the cliff.
Fabulous video !! My parents and I travelled the “Fish Creek Road” to the Rosevelt Dam. I couldn’t believe the road we were driving on. I was scared shitless as I don’t like heights. My Dad was very proud showing his snowbird visitors this road through the area. I visited the area in February of the year 1990. Any later it would be getting too hot to see it. It is too bad it has gotten ruined. I hope they are able to fix it. I can tell it will be a gruelling task, but it is well worth it for the many tourists that come. IMO Arizona has some of the most interesting areas to see. You will never ever get bored of it.
We hope they fix it, too! Thanks for the kind words and sharing your memories of the Trail. ❤️
We passed through superstition Mountains during the pandemic world full timing. We bought a home near Gold Canyon. RV base camp !
Wonderful! Maybe we’ll see you there!
