From Marrying Into An "Old Money" Family To German Spy: The Strange Case of Florence Gould
Florence Gould, who ascended from her modest roots to become a railroad heiress, was an architect of her own destiny who refused to let morality interfere with ambition.
From the ashes of post-war Paris, she built an empire of art and influence, leaving beauty and betrayal in equal measure. But her calculated dance of survival during history's darkest hours would forge a legacy forever tainted by collaboration.

-------------
In 1920s Paris, Florence Gould mastered the art of playing every side, transforming herself from a San Francisco publisher's daughter into one of the most influential - and controversial - American socialites in French history.
Born in 1895 to French publisher Maximilien Lacaze, Florence's early life in San Francisco prepared her for a lifetime of straddling cultures and navigating complex social landscapes.
The 1906 San Francisco earthquake taught young Florence her first crucial lesson about survival: knowing when to abandon a sinking ship - a skill that would define her remarkable life.
After arriving in post-WWI Paris as a nurse, she quickly traded her uniform for sequins, working as a showgirl before capturing the attention of railroad heir Frank Jay Gould.
Their 1923 marriage launched Florence into the upper echelons of French society, where she established herself as a cultural powerbroker through her legendary salons and growing art collection.
When Nazi forces occupied Paris in 1940, Florence chose not to flee like most wealthy Americans.
Instead, she saw opportunity in chaos, transforming her famous salon into a gathering place for both German officers and French intellectuals.
Her wartime activities included documented collaboration with Nazi officials, questionable art acquisitions from persecuted Jewish collectors, and complex financial dealings that would later draw intense scrutiny from investigators.
Though she faced potential treason charges after Liberation, Florence ultimately avoided conviction and embarked on a calculated campaign of cultural philanthropy to rehabilitate her image.
The establishment of the Florence Gould Foundation and numerous literary prizes served to present herself as a patron of French culture rather than a wartime collaborator, though investigation records clearly documented her activities during occupation.
When she died in 1983 at her Mediterranean villa, she left behind a complex legacy that spans continents and decades - one that raises profound questions about survival, morality, and the power of wealth to reshape historical memory.
Her story reveals how a talented social chameleon navigated the most turbulent period of 20th-century European history, making choices that would simultaneously ensure her survival and cement her infamy.
Through this episode, we explore not just another tale of a society hostess caught in history's crossfire, but the story of a woman who understood that in times of war, morality becomes a luxury few can afford.
Join us as we uncover the remarkable journey of Florence Gould - from San Francisco earthquake survivor to Paris showgirl, from railroad heiress to wartime collaborator, from accused traitor to cultural philanthropist.
This is the story of the American socialite who owned Paris, a woman whose life embodied the stark truth that the most dangerous people aren't those who choose a side - they're the ones who choose them all.
From the ashes of post-war Paris, she built an empire of art and influence, leaving beauty and betrayal in equal measure. But her calculated dance of survival during history's darkest hours would forge a legacy forever tainted by collaboration.

Old Money vs. New Money Behavior: 5 Signs That Tell EVERYTHING
มุมมอง 1.9K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
So you’ve spent your entire life wondering why some people have, "old money vs. new money" behaviors. Indeed, someone can have a large bank account and overcompensate for it as if they were. These are the oft-called “new money” behaviors. And, someone can have less money in the bank than our nouveau riche friend and carry themselves with a much higher level of dignity, restraint, and refinement...
Barbara Hutton last husband was I think her soul mate she had a lot of money so she could do as she pleased her son would inherit her fortune but sadly he died so she had no one to leaver her Monet too a shame she died at 66 as that is still young a very beauiful lady who did she leave her money to after her son died
Did she have children?
Why do you have a photo of Norman Prescott (the Wineville Chicken Coop murderer) in the thumbnail? That's an entirely different case.
So many poor little rich girls. 🤦🏼♀️ I give Doris Duke credit for at least trying to do good things.
Man, I never knew the real story,. It's so sad. Money really doesn't buy happiness.
This tragic narrative mirrors the life of Doris Duke, sharing a striking similarity in their deprived and emotionally barren childhoods.
Her story is a tragic within the betrayal around her life and caught up within her self in trouble.
Balenciaga all the way back then😮
YOUR WORK is a THRILL for me! Gorgeous!
Quite kind of you to say!
Satan can give wealth, beauty… but, he demands your life and your children’s and their children’s…
It's the same diamond 💎 they mentioned in the Titanic, I know it's a movie but, look the ship went down because of that damned diamond 💎 There's evilness in the diamond, that's why there's all these problems and whoever has it will have problems, pretty scary 🤨🇺🇸❗❗❗❗❗❗❗❗❗ God bless those that died on the Titanic they are always in my prayers and thoughts 😢🙏✝️❤️🇺🇸
Puttin it on the dog? And her husband was in the looney bin
COMMENT: Had you heard of Florence Gould’s story - and what is your opinion on her wild life?
Gloria, didn't have access to the Vanderbilt fortune?
Gloria, wrote a nasty book in her 80's, disgusting
Can't fix Evil
Barbara = Jose and Kitty Menendez
I LOVE YOUR WORK! The writing on this: was exquisite! Loved the “Poison Pen.” (I’m a published Christian author.) ❤
Tears for her. Her only child died. 😢🩷
I knew this story; but love the presentation here! Photos, etc, are luscious! ❤
What a phenomenal video! So well done! Did not know this story. I am sure him being her only child: made it so much harder for her to acknowledge or accept! The father escaped to a normal life. Parents who have disabled children; suffer higher divorce, just like parents who suffer child loss.
How delightful of you to take the time to express your thoughtful remarks!
@ Watching another now! You are phenomenal! Love your Chapter breaks. 🩷
Excellent. Very good quality views of her life and her story is recounted clearly and fluently. No bis repetita, which is quite annoying with some storytellers. Thank yor not taking us as fools.
Quite kind of you to say, Coral!
Why is Stewart Northcott on the thumbnail?
No this the first time I have heard of this story. I think there was something mentally with both parents and all of these issues the son had. Thank you❤
She was mentally ill and violent herself ! To do what she did to her son, using it as a cure is utterly criminal and obscene ! Poor Anthony !!!!!!!
your documentations are always delightful und interesting! Thank you for this one! I did enjoy it! And I think that this curse was always a tale ....and turned into selfulfilling prophecy .... ! But the blue diamond which glows red after it is treated with UV-light is really something special!
Splendid to have you with us, Olaf!
Interesting story however what a sicko mother son relationship.
Script and narration interesting but the constant repetition of the same handful of images is bad. There is way too much similar content out there for this channel to be successful
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback, Chuck! We hope you stick around as we grow and improve :)
@ I fully intend to!
YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL AND NEVER BE HAPPY, THAT WHAT HAPPENED IN THIS CASE, HIS MOTHER, MS. BARBARA LONGED FOR MONEY HAPPINESS, HER SON ANTHONY INHERTED HIS MOTHER TRAITS, BUT SHE WENT WITH ĤER OWN SON, HOW DEVERSTATING COULD THIS BE FOR HER SON, TOO MUCH TOO SOON. GREAT VIDEO👍
Her childhood mentally destroyed her, and she in turn, mentally destroyed her son...generational curse. 😢
😢
This is like a Greek Tragedy. Dysfunction Junction…Savage Grace is fantastic, btw.
If it was SO Cursed How did Cartier escape. Many deaths attributed to this Gem was because of Sheer Entitlement and greed/Stupidity. Also back then With NO Antibiotics + lousy healthcare Ppl Died They Just Did
Pierre Cartier used to make up stories to sell his gems At a higher price. He sold her the Hope Diamond With it's tale of death + Drama. She was delighted
She was financing Jon Edward’s political campaign when he was caught having an affair with his BM
Wasn’t incest illegal? Why wasn’t she arrested
I would spend summer in Switzerland and winters in Spain
I read the book called Savage Grace... couldn't put it down. The film was terrific.
I read the book called Savage Grace... couldn't put it down. The film was terrific.
Why not use photos that go with the storyline?
When I lived in Maryland I would take the Metro to Washington and visit the Hope Diamond at every opportunity. It really does take my breath away.
🤩
Maybe I am nit picking here but the authorities had EIGHT freakin' MONTHS to obtain his medical records. This is hard to believe. Not that he should have gotten out on bail but that poor kid never stood a chance in this world. Both his parents were disgraceful. There is more to this tragic story that we may never know.
😢 yes what a sad story of people that just won't except the fact of a child that is crying for help, just because they don't want to live with the feeling of being degraded. Which i think is ridiculous 😢😢
😢
Psychiatrie doesn’t produce true healings. As an exemple, I just remind how a largely applied treatment against mental disturbances in the 60ies: high dosage of insulin was given to patients without reliable trials. Many died by inner organs destruction like the kidneys… Nobody talks about 😢
Yikes! 😮
I would say that Barbara was a very kind, generous(extremely so) and nice person but cause she mixed in the high society that she apparently loved its the wrong place to find a husband let alone love. All her husbands were gold diggers except Gary Grant. They all fleeced her after their divorces securing a staggering amount of money which they didn't deserve! Sadly, Barbara had no real interest in a hobby or an activity that could sustain her ingrained self worthlessness. Yet her one great love was her fabulous jewlery collection. These fabulous baubles were more sustaining than those greedy husbands ever were! She had important historical jewelry that belonged to Queen Marie Antoinette of France and Empess Catherine II. I love her and have empathy for her too.🎉❤❤
I saw the film about them. The son stabbed the mother, then calmly ordered food to be sent to their rooms. I do admire the Bakelite products, though.
Poor Antony! Bad enough that they wouldn't acknowledge his mental health issues when they could afford the best treatments, ( of course it was all about keeping up the social facade ) but my fecking gawd, Barabara seducing him to "cure" his gayness! Revolting! That poor kid, he didn't have a snowballs chance in hell of turning out okay! Love the term the narrator used, "Maternal Malpractice." Ya think?
This one is a little ‘eerie’.
Does it sound like mom was perhaps bipolar ? She fawned over her son one day & ignored him the next. He poor guy was gay of course but they called many mental illnesses schizophrenic ,but I guess we will never know. My grandmother was diagnosed with every new mental illness that her Dr.came up with. She had 7 children & every time she had a baby she got worse…my aunt asked grandfather ,you are a very smart man an engineer, why would you keep having babies. Anyway after grandfather passed she broke her hip & was taken off lithium for bipolar. She stayed off mental health meds from age 60 -96 & never had mental illness again. The Dr said to me it’s important to see other Drs on your life’s journey, your favorite old family Dr that’s known you since you were young may not be up on the latest studies.
That's wonderful to hear. My daughter is bipolar. 🙏🏻
Ah yup- this is a spiritual problem in the family line. Evil attached.
@@miniaturesculptureartby23r20Your statement has no basis in fact. Bipolar disorder is a mental illness brought on by several factors. In the future, refrain from making such baseless comments as they help no one and only make you appear foolish.
