Sapa

When you are on a Grandma tour the best way to get around Sapa is on the back of a motorbike and topping it off with a home cooked lunch shared at our driver's house. In between taking in the spectacular scenery and stopping to watch the locals.

Bai Tu Long Bay

As an alternative to HaLong Bay we went to Cai Rong Pier and took the local ferry and travelled through Bai Tu Long out to Quan Lan Island. It took around 3 hrs or thereabouts and we got to really enjoy the scenery and life along the bay.

Innisfail in Queensland

Innisfail is a small town located in the Cassowary Coast Region, Queensland, Australia between Mission beach and Cairns and is a great place to visit. It’s primarily a sugar cane and banana town. It remains relatively untouched by the tourist boom and has the finest collection of Art Deco buildings anywhere in Australia. The town was originally called Geraldton but a Russian ship bound for Gera...

Texas or What Else Can Go Wrong!

Babinda , the wettest town in Australia
มุมมอง 1.1K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Babinda is situated on the Bruce Highway, and just south of Cairns. The town lies in the shadow of Queensland’s two highest mountains; Mt Bartle Frere (1622m) and Mt Bellenden Kerr (1593m). The appeal of the town is the rainforest surrounding the town: the beautiful, if dangerous, "The Boulders", on Babinda Creek and the Josephine Falls. Babinda is known as ‘Australia’s Wettest town’ with an av...

Feeding the Gropers in Cooktown

When the tide is up in Cooktown head dow to the Cook’s Landing Kiosk to see the Gropers come in for a feed of Tuna or Mackerel carcasses. You’ll be amazed at their size, and they aren’t even fully grown yet.
Croydon in far north Queensland

Croydon is an amazing and quaint town on the Savannah Highway in far north Queensland. It's a town with a big history that started with the discovery of gold in 1885. You can enjoy living history through static displays and by visiting the businesses still operating from the 1880’s.

Lou's Healey Time
มุมมอง 2683 ปีที่แล้ว
Lou was in the throes of a love affair with Austin Healey's since he was a 12-year old growing up in regional South Australia. In his early 20s he bought his first Healey, but as often happens he sold it on when we started a family. When the kids were all grown up and had left home, he wasted no time in putting his mechanic’s eye and ear to good use and picking up our second. With many hours sp...

Hi Heather & Lou, thanks for the video, it rekindled some great memories. I was the Police Officer there for 3 years from ‘84 through ’86. It was a one man Station of course and Windorah School had only one Teacher who taught all Primary School classes from 1 to 7. When my wife and I arrived our 3 kids took the pupil enrolment from 9 to 12. The Western Star hotel was the only one in town, but not the only one in my Division, the other being the Betoota Hotel about 200 km away, roughly half way to Birdsville. It was operating at the time but when the Licencee Sigmund ‘Ziggy’ Remienko passed away some years after I left it closed, although I believe it has recently been reopened. At one time, pre motor vehicle, there were a chain of hotels spaced about one day horse power apart but they are all long gone and very difficult to locate, a local guide is definitely needed, there is little or nothing left to see. There had been a hotel on the Windorah bank of Cooper Creek 12 km from town which was washed away in a flood. Those red sand dunes on Ourdel Station are great aren’t they, my wife and I would sometimes take our kids there to play and picnic. Sandy Kidd, the owner, was a friend of ours and we would often visit each other for meals and socialising. His wife was a Registered Nurse and as the town didn’t have a resident Doctor, the Royal Flying Doctor Service had provided her with a key to their medical supplies in case of need before they could arrive. His family had owned Mayfield Station close to Windorah and when Sandy obtained his property the name was taken from Lourdes, a pilgrimage town in the Pyrenees, France, the letters shuffled to make Ourdel. (Our Dell) Unfortunately Mayfield homestead had burned to the ground while I was at Windorah, very sad. When there was a Search & Rescue exercise organised I would accompany Sandy in his Cessna while his and other aircraft grid patterned the area. I loved seeing the countryside from his light plane, just magic, beautiful. Cheers

The sand dune is named after legendary local grazier Sandy Kidd of Mayfield station now named Ourdel station. Sandy was an amazing bush pilot and performed many rescues and services for the local community and authourities in his Cessna 172. He pioneered aerial mustering and an environmentalist protecting the Cooper Creek floodplains. Just ask any local about Sando's sand dune.

My father was born in Warialda in 1913, my grandmother was also born there 1893, she was from a large family that had lived in the Yetman area and finally settled on a property they called "Glenridding" just outside Warialda. My grandfather born in 1890, was from Clermont in Queensland, also from a large family, his father was mining on what was to become Blair Athol.. later to have hotels/pubs in town. Unfortunately after my grandfather had left town, several family members died in the catastrophic flood of 1916. In 1912 he ended up in Warialda, were he married and started a family, that later set up a sawmill on Gragin Rd. in town. I have photos from the 1940's of my parents, grandparents and other family members taken on one of their many picnics at Cranky Rock.. a beautiful setting. As kids, we had lots of trips to see family - many still living there today, but sadly were never taken Cranky Rock, so thank you for the tour! I'm lucky to live on the Sydney's Northern Beaches, were we still have untouched native bushland... at least for now! Clermont history is well documented with photos - as the town was moved by steam engine to higher ground, away from the lagoon after the flood. Many of these photos survive, it's a town well worth a visit. Thanks again. Denise

My mom was born there in 1929 and lived on a big cattle station. I was curious what Warialda looked like. I can imagine. I lived in Australia for 10 years and fell in love with the bush and gum trees. Magical place. I lived mainly on the coast Manly to Palm Beach but loved wandering in the reserves. I heard all the stories and now can see in my mind the town and people and history. Thanks for that.
