      My Soldier Series is unfortunately from 1st Edition where they were +3 Shoot. It's kind of a bummer they had their Shoot value reduced as they've lost a lot of their usefulness.     Just recently discovered this channel and slowly catching up. I appreciate the flavor with the cult being first order troopers(or at least that's what I think so I had to comment). I'm hoping to restart the campaign I started last year. Thanks for the great content. Definitely reminding me of the rules and getting me hyped.

      I'm glad you found my channel! Yep - that's a First Order helmet (on a Marvel Vision body). I figured characters with Snow Trooper hoods would make good cultists. If you get caught up with the videos, I'm currently taking a break for the holidays, but Turns 12-14 should be releasing in January.

      I think there might be, but I always stick with pencil and paper or sometimes a spreadsheet on my computer. Sorry I'm not much help with this. Changes and updates with 2nd Edition makes it a more balanced game. If you are playing 1st Edition I would encourage you to you the XP tables from 2E and also found in the Maaze of Malchior book which shifts the bonuses from killing stuff to collecting treasures and casting spells.

      That would be a huge book if it included all the supplements!😄 The author strives for simplicity, and adding all the options would make the game unnecessarily complicated for a 1st time player, as well as raise the price for extra content that not every player would be interested in. 1E is still totally viable (as long as no one in your group bumps to 2E). There’s actually some things I prefer with the original (mainly with leveling-up and having more treasure tokens). I do like the most of the overhauls done with the spells in 2E…except there’s still some OP/auto-take spells that could have used some nerfing.

    Forcing combat question.. can you only force combat for an enemy that ends their move within one inch of you or can you intercept and halt them if they try to move past you, but pass within that radius ?

      Also, can a figure that is in combat force combat on a second figure ? For example if two figures try to move within 1 inch?

      You can force at any point during their movement - it’s designed to allow a figure to essentially block a pathway. For your follow-up question, a figure can only force combat if they are “currently free to move” - so figures in combat or prevented from moving due to magic cannot force combat. So if your path is blocked, you can send in a Thug to enter combat with the guard, then rush a different figure past the distracted guard.

      Thanks I’m glad you’re enjoying the campaign! I’ve recorded battle #12 and getting ready to play #13…but it’s been tough finding time lately. I’m guessing I’ll probably start releasing videos in January at this point, so I can try to have them all release close to the same time.

      Do you mean brick built rocky terrain? I plan to do a video sometime next year about the different things I use for my terrain. But as far as making rocky terrain with blocks - most of my rocky terrain are large single pieces, not small pieces I built myself. If you can get a lot of gray pieces of various shapes, you can just build them together randomly to create rocks. Most of the large rocks I have are Mega Bloks pieces from about 20 years ago that unfortunately are out of production now.

    I spent years before I ever used apothecaries, but having a free healing potion every game is great if my wizard is empowering spells a lot (which my summoner and soothsayer especially do). At first, I only used them for that healing potion, but I have now realised how good they are for buffing soldiers of saving the treasure carriers. An apothecary with a potion of invisibility can heal the wizard, then go after a treasure, picking it up and going invisible, or turning another treasure carrier invisible. It is such a good way of protecting the treasure carrier and getting him out of trouble safely.

      They are definitely useful! I haven't messed around too much with giving them an additional potion of some sort. I'm actually kind of hesitant to do use potions (besides the free Apothecary ones) with 2nd Edition because money is so tight. I find it's usually more beneficial to sell the potions to buy other stuff than to actually use them. I think the next campaign I play I'm going to commit to not selling potions and just have fun using them. Also, thanks for checking out some of my really old content!

Do you have any videos where you talk about the figures you use for your characters I know some are Lego but are there other brands that are available? I want to trying playing the way you do but have no idea what to buy …. Legos are to expensive to try and get everything I would need to play 5PFH

      Hello! I don't currently have videos about the figures I use - though I want to make something next year that discusses this. I used to see generic LEGO figures on Amazon all the time but I can't seem to find any with a search now. LEGO isn't a cheap way to go...however you don't have to do any painting, so for me the time savings is more important than the money cost. Sci-Fi (Star Wars) LEGO figures can usually be found for about $5 each (there's usually a battle pack available at any given time that's between $16-20 for four figures). These are usually kind of generic and to get an interesting variety, larger sets with just a few figures is usually required. I had a large collection of stuff from my childhood/teen years and have been slowly adding new stuff throughout my adult life (and have spent hundreds in the last few years just because I enjoy collecting). There's a few used LEGO stores in neighboring towns that I go to occasionally where I can pick up miscellaneous figures and accessories - and finding a place like that would be a good place to start. Terrain is a whole different (and expensive) subject...but honestly, if I didn't have a channel focused on the use of bricks and blocks, I would use regular gaming terrain instead (but still with LEGO figures).

    I definitely prefer this way of showing the layout and team deployment. The close-up combined with the positional arrows work really well and the vertical layout view is much clearer.

    Lots of great ideas there. I agree that the shooting captain is the better option. It seems strange that the captain can never fight as well as a normal melee specialist. I usually only consider a captain if I already have a powerful warband with an excess of magic items. To my mind, their ability to have lots of magic items and die less often are their main real advantages. Overall, I hate them due to the ongoing payments. If it wasn't for that, they'd be a cool addition to a warband and worth having. I think, in my next campaign, I'll try to get my friends to use a few of your house rules. Training costs for lvl increases rather than a percentage of everything, give them a level of wizard lvl/2 (rounding down) and allow each stat to be increased by 1 through experience. I'd allow them to be healed like apprentices if badly wounded and not tie gear to them.

That’s an interesting idea to wait to hire them until you’ve got a few items to give them - generally people like to hire early to start gathering XP, but I like your idea. I think mutually agreed upon house rules like you’re doing is the way to go with Captains.

    I like this scenario, as it mixes up the relative strengths of units. Armoured elites suffer, but constructs and undead rock. It is good as it prevents the game having warbands that are always better. It is good that the frozen city is so unpredictable.

      Yeah I like battles that give bonuses or penalties to specific soldiers - there's a few scenarios out there that give bonuses to Thieves and Treasure Hunters or Trackers based on skills such a soldier would likely have. Always nice to see them as more than just a stat line.

      The “Dead” result for Soldier survival rolls inculcates Magic Items are lost as well. The page on promoting an Apprentice to replace a dead Wizard states the Wizard’s items are lost. Interestingly I don’t think it says anywhere that a dead apprentice loses their items…but I believe the intent is any dead figure loses their magic stuff.

    I wonder how well this would work with insect swarm instead of imp. The possessed bears would be immune to insect swarm, being large, so they could charge the target with +6 and the victim of the swarm has -4 fight. It would probably require close support between spellcasters and bears and lacks the nuisance units, but the great thing about insect swarm is that the enemy casters don't get a save until after their activation.

      Plaguing the Bears is something I remember people talking about when 2E released. I just looked for an official ruling on whether being "immune" meant the spell can't be cast on Large figures or it can be cast on them and they just don't suffer any effects. I found a two part question: 1. Can it be cast on an ally? 2.Can it be cast on an immune ally? The author responded with, "Sounds like a fun strategy to me! So, yeah, go for it." I'm assuming he's answering both questions with that answer. It's definitely a good way to make Bears even more OP than they already are!

I hope you are able to get some games in yourself - I totally get being easily distracted.🙃 Keep it simple - grab a few minis and throw some stuff from your pantry on the table and play out a battle - my first few games learning the rules were done this way and it was a blast!

    Hope that you're planning to continue this campaign; I've really enjoyed watching your videos! However, given how skilled/well armed your crew has become, you might want to consider using some of the rules to make your opponents tougher (both in terms of more numbers and giving them better ratings).

    My friends and I usually allow uncontested treasures within 1” to be claimed just because killing the last opponent and not being able to pick up the treasure at your feet, like that game, seems like a real kick in the teeth from the rules. I’m pretty sure you charged both sides 5 gold too much for the man-at-arms, using 1st ed prices.

    I am enjoying these videos. The battle reports are not as visually stimulating as some other channels, but I think you have a better understanding of the Frostgrave rules, tactics and gameplay than any of the other channels that I have been watching Frostgrave content on (although you gave the Skeleton move 4 at 24.24 rather than move 6). Plus, your black beast of Aargh looks amazing.

      😄Making the Black Beast was pretty fun! I'm not surprised I mixed up a move rate - there were so many monsters in this battle! A lot of channels play a lot of different games - focusing on just a few games on my channel helps me stay accurate on the rules...though I just realized I haven't released a Frostgrave battle video since April of 2022! They unfortunately don't get a lot of views so I changed my focus to strategy videos - but I do hope to release some new Frostgrave battles next year! I don't know if you've watched any of my Five Parsecs battles, but instead of holding the camera and clicking my figures into place, now I use stationary cameras, a rotating table, my figures are on bases to make movements easier, and I've tighten up some of my editing. While my videos still won't be flashy like some channels or contain cool narrative voiceovers like Dice Chatter, future Frostgrave battle videos I make should be easier to watch than what's on my channel now.👍

    I really like what you did with the motivation and gameplay style for each war and. It reminds me of what I heard about the new Mortal Enemies (which I don’t yet have) in which NPC war bands have specific objectives in the fight, such as killing soldiers, killing the wizard etc. It makes me wonder if your approach here influenced the module.

      I think since Frostgrave is more of a casual game than a tight ruleset for power-gamers, motivations can really add to the fun of creating a story for the team - you can make your choices based on "what would this Wizard do" rather than what is the best mathematical decision in the given moment. That would be cool if I did influence the supplement design in some way, but Joe is pretty creative and he probably came up with it himself.😊 I think I've read that he doesn't usually check out too much fan content so he doesn't accidentally steal someone's ideas.

I remember a game in which, after taking out the enemy summoner, my thaumaturge started healing enemy soldiers, to help them against random monsters, as he was the sort of person who wouldn’t want needless killing. (My opponent wanted them to all fight to the death regardless, as he was feeling bad about my crossbow man one shot killing his wizard)

    Another controller build I am trying out is the necromancer. Control demon and control animal are aligned. Control construct and mind control are neutral. Taking steal health for healing, spell eater (effectively dispel magic) to negate opponent’s spells. No attack spells, but I will only be casting controls, so no need. It lacks the speed of the summoner build’s jump, but I did take Fleet Feet, for a bit of mobility. Due to high casting values of mind control, I am taking two apothecaries and two crossbow men, plus a bunch of thugs and thieves.

      That sounds like a good build - Fleet Feeting everyone while the opponent is fighting his own warband or all of the uncontrolled creatures could work well to snag all the treasure tokens! I'm curious, do you play against multiple different opponents to make use of all the control options or is it more of a concept build?

We like to have two war bands each and randomly determine which will be used, so that we don’t end up customizing our build to a single opponent. With a mix of different opponents, I hope that this controller build will work out ok.

    If you have “into the breeding pits” Deflect is amazing! If any elemental it’s hurls an elemental bolt, you can hurl it back at them, killing them, instead of you. You can even use it against explosive runes, walking into them and hurling then 4” away, to blow up nearby enemies instead of you.

      For some reason, I always tend to overlook and then forget about the additional spells that appear in the supplements...maybe because there aren't too many of them? I had to look that one up and that could be a pretty effective spell! I like how those reactive/counter spells work - it's a great idea to really give the sense of a wizard battling with his spells.

      @@bricksblocksgaming8017 I was playing against an elementalist with a soothsayer last month. I had lost my first game badly and only had one archer and a bunch of thugs. He had gained over 600 gold and was feeling confident, with a powerful selection of soldiers. On turn two, I mind controlled his knight to kill his apprentice. His wizard cast an elemental bolt at me and I sent it back at him, rolling well and taking him out. It was such a shocking reversal for him, as I didn’t have a chance to cast it in the first game and he had forgotten that I had that spell.

    I agree with you, but I think that beauty is a great runner up. I like to start a game by getting both spellcasters to cast (and often empower) it, in order to avoid being picked off my enemy snipers. Sure, it can be dispelled or overcome by true sight, but that forces my opponent to sacrifice a spell, just to restore the status quo. No big loss. As most players tend to get heal, they usually don’t have dispel magic.

    It looks as though everyone agrees with you about Wall. I find myself torn between elemental ball and elemental bolt. Whilst grenade is better than elemental ball, if I am not in a position to get grenade, I’d pick ball over bolt, just because the threat of area damage is often more effective as a deterrent than the reality, but the reality can sometimes be devastating.

      Yeah Wall is so versatile. I took Ball with a Wizard once, and while he cast the spell a lot, the other team was almost always able to keep his guys spread enough to keep the spell firing at just a single target. I do really like Ball with more than 2 players in a game as it can be really strong against Combats that only the other players are involved with. The +7 from Bolt is so strong.

      They both replace the mundane item and fill an Item Slot. So Soliders can carry 1 Magic Item. I think the confusion comes with spellcaster slots - they can be filled with any combination of mundane and magic items. Soldiers essentially have one “Magic Item” slot that can be filled with a general item (Potion, Ring, Boots, etc.) or a Magic Wep/Arm that matches and replaces their mundane item. So a Soldier with Magic sword can’t carry a Potion or vice versa.

    I love summoners and love most of this build (it is pretty similar to how I built my summoner) but would get an apothecary and swap Imp for summon demon. Getting off a big demon (can be empowered without limit) early on as well as some possessed bears would make this warband even more deadly. After a few games, my summoner was usually getting a major demon at least once a game. Of course, Thaumaturges are still the bane of summoners.

    There are some great ideas, but you seem to really like Fast Act. It is not a spell that I ever bothered with. Using up a wizard's spell, just to make one warrior act a bit faster seems pointless, when the wizard can usually do more damage with another spell than any one soldier. I love Write Scroll. Great spell and so useful. I am really liking your builds.

      I think I chose Fast Act here just because it casts easy for a Neutral spell. It can good utility spell - allowing a ranged Soldier to fire before a target can move to cover or charging a Bear into combat with a Spellcaster before they can act. It's also great if you lose the initiative roll - especially to help a Treasure Hauler get away from a pursuing enemy. Write Scroll is a pretty amazing spell, opening up a lot of options - plus it's just fun a thematic having Spellcasters making their own scrolls.

    I like your thinking on this, but I might have gone with imp, rather than summon demon. They may be uncontrolled, but you can throw them out anywhere, making them great nuisance threats and distractions. Casting is easier and unless you do a lot of empowering, summon demon will mostly be getting you imps.

      I just responded to one of your other comments about Summon vs Imp.😄 For this build, I like SD as something to play first turn when you can’t see the enemy yet. Then Curse is just spammed during the battle. I find that Curse and Imp would kind of compete in their roles so that’s why I went with SD. Also, getting a Demon on the team is this Wizards only access to Magic Damage at the start of the campaign.

    I love infantrymen with a starting warband, but having a little ranged fighting can be really important, especially if your opponent has some battlefield control spells. The alternative build for losing friends is to use an illusionist with 4 crossbow men and 4 thugs for screening (swapping to javelin men later, if you want to really maximize ranged combat) and use Glow on your opponents spellcasters (or key fighters). It can be utterly brutal.

      I feel like I used ranged Soldiers a lot less in 2nd Edition than I did with 1st with them now taking up precious Specialist slots. I've always wanted to try the 4 Javeliner + 4 Archer/Crossbowmen combo but haven't done it yet. Glow can be pretty harsh - especially with that Soldier line up.

      @@bricksblocksgaming8017 with 10 ranged attackers, including the wizard, playing with the critical hit rolls, it seemed that someone was getting one-shot kills every couple of turns, but if your opponent can get close the ranged soldiers suffer. In my first year of playing, my opponent used this build with his second warband. It was always a brutal match. It was just a question of who got slaughtered. In the first match it was me, but once I got used to fighting them, it was usually him that suffered.

    You've commented that you're starting to find that the scenarios aren't as challenging as they were at first, that as your crew's skills increase and they get better equipment the enemy seem to be too easy to take out. This is (unfortunately) all too common with the Five Parsecs system. If this is the case for you, I recommend you implement some of the suggestions on "Progressive Difficulty" in the official 'Trailblazers Toolkit' expansion (page 16-17). This should help to make your adversaries tougher and more dangerous, and return dramatic tension to your game sessions.

    At 51:13 you misinterpret the rule regarding "Notable Items." If you "Hold the Field" at the end of a battle you're assumed to have sufficient time to gather up any items still on the board, so you should have acquired the documents/metal.

With standard Objectives (p90-91) most of those are assumed complete simply by HtF and it states if you collect things you’re looking for regarding the Objective. In the Postgame section it’s mentioned in the text for HtF that you collect things, but that seems more like general flavor text about why you get to roll on the following table. Is there somewhere that specifically states Notable Sights are obtained?

    "Characters can accumulate multiple Stun markers. If a character ever has 3 or more Stun markers at the same time, they are knocked out and removed from play". - 5PFH Pg.40. Also see the section Determine Injuries and Recovery 5PFH Pg 121. A model is treated as a casualty even if knocked out due to three stun markers. But no injury roll is required. Any enemy model that is removed from play, would be regarded as a casualty. For purposes of morale checks and awarding xp. That model would be regarded as lost in combat. See Running Away section 5PFH Pg 114.

      Thanks for the response! I think you are probably right. The rules-lawyer in me wants a defined meaning of “casualty” in the game. However it does appear that “casualty”, “lost”, “knocked out”, and “removed in combat” are all used interchangeably in the book. Im just overthinking things.😄

      I realized this during my final watch through before posting - I think I was so focused on where the gunfire had been coming from I forgot it was from a different angle. It didn't end up changing the outcome much - Danik probably would have had to position himself differently to get his following shot off while still staying in cover from the Lieutenant.
