Unfolding, While Solidly Present and Aware - John Wheeler
John Wheeler - Awakening to the Natural State, part 38
Welcome to Spiritual Narrative!
🌟In this profound and liberating dialogue, a seeker recounts a powerful realization: the dissolution of the sense of separateness, likened to watching drops of oil scatter in water. As the experience deepens, they describe an overwhelming sense of joy and a recognition of the seamless, boundless nature of reality-an effortless "isness" that simply is.
John responds with grounded wisdom, emphasizing that this unfolding is natural and unforced. He reassures that while old patterns may still arise, they are no longer fueled by belief. The seeker begins to notice that the apparent "I" is nothing more than a thought-a habit of mind. True freedom lies in recognizing the ever-present awareness in which all arises and dissolves.
As the conversation deepens, John points to the simplicity of being: no effort, no attainment, no "I" to fix or solve-just the timeless presence that remains constant before, during, and after all thoughts. This dialogue beautifully illustrates how questioning the sense of self and seeing through the illusion of the separate "I" reveals the vastness of our true nature.
💡 Key Takeaways:
- The sense of a separate "I" is just a thought arising in awareness.
- True freedom is seeing the "I" as an appearance, not a reality.
- Awareness is effortless, unchanging, and always present-it requires nothing to "attain."
- Old habits of identification dissolve naturally when seen for what they are.
🎧 This exchange offers a powerful pointer to rest in the undeniable certainty of being, where all questions dissolve into clarity.

The I creates suffering only to the extent that the I is experienced through the body and the five senses. The I is in fact a distinct individuality that when experienced with supersensible awareness beyond the 5 senses is in fact a spirit based individuality with a unique and distinct self.

It is not something that can be understood with the mind. Imagine someone explaining to you what a raspberry tastes like. The words would mean nothing to you until you put one in your mouth and began to chew. Then you would see and feel what the words were pointing to. The way to "taste" this is through the practice of Self-Enquiry. Practice this and all will happen automatically - there is nothing else that needs to be done.

@SpiritualNarrative I'm just hearing terms like 'apperception' and I notice that it's also used in the early books of Ramesh as well. Well, the first thing is it had to be translated from Marathi because Maharaj only spoke Marathi, whereas Ramesh spoke Marathi and English. Once translated it can be edited any way the publisher sees fit.

@@SpiritualNarrative yes, I'm enjoying them. So continue. I did hear recently that Ramesh said the publisher of I Am That also published his first book that was written while Maharaj was alive (with his blessing), apparently the publisher said to people if you want to understand I Am That read pointers from Nisargadatta Maharaj first. I don't know how much weight that has apart from a publisher wanting to sell two books instead of one haha

Nisargadatta is not saying anything that was not said by Ramana Maharishi or Budha. Indian spirituality in more or less copy/paste method of recycling the same thing over and over. By saying that I don't deny the possibility that it can inspire some people. Some people like Coca Cola, and that is OK, as long as they don't force me to drink the same.

Its always intriguing hearing questions about fear that arises in meditation. In my case i had seen Ramesh Balsekar at his house back in the 90s, but some 4 years later all this fear of annihilation or death started arising and i actually rang him up and asked about it. This went on in the background not just 'in meditation'. Finally it came up very intensely and there was just nothing left to resist it or to grasp anything.. so everything just disappeared.. all perceptions.. all sensations.. everything. But the main thing is the fear also disappeared and hasn't returned., because the fear is there with the belief 'i am born'. I am this or that. One cant claim to have realized the unborn and have fear of death or dissolution, because what could they fear dissolves.. their reality is immortal amrita. The fellow in the question said he is going to track the fear down in meditation.. in this way he perpetuates it because it perpetuates the notion that i am bound and born and need to be realized.

Thank you for this clear (as a matter of fact) exposition of teaching of the Nisargadatta Maharaj. That's supracingly lucid and easily understandable, compering with other presentations (translations?). This one is very good for meditation on the true meaning of the words of Maharaj. 🙏 Thank you! Is this an AI translation, I wonder? It doesn't really matter to me who or what, as long as the point of truth and authenticity is being passed on to the listener.

If i understand right, the main two translators during this period were Mullarpattan and Ramesh Balsekar. English speakers particularly liked Ramesh Balsekar's translating because he was educated at London School ot Economics in England and had good grasp of the English language, as well as being a native Marathi speaker like Maharaj.. and Nisargadatta only spoke Marathi and nothing else. Sometimes I can recognize Ramesh's language, but not so much here.. But it may have been. The translator of I Am That was a polish man, not a native Marathi speaker.. nor a native English speaker.. so he knew a bit of Marathi and English and did his best..

If I know anything, I know that I have lived here many times before - and some places. If it is not so, existence is totally meaningless. Everything is speculative. Reincarnation is not speculative to me - believing and knowing so does not cause fear but makes sense of this passage. For those who dare to look, they will find evidence of their previous and maybe even hints of coming ones.
