N988EB 2nd Flight
มุมมอง 21214 วันที่ผ่านมา
Second flight of N988EB, Sonerai IILS after enlarging the cowl outlet a bit. This time no airspeed at all - I had accidentally disconnected the pitot connection on the inside of the cockpit. So landing a little fast. The oil temp issue is better this time - but needs more cooling.

First flight of N988EB - 2024 Sonerai II L Stretch. Little bit of an oil temp issue with the VW 2273. Hopefully a larger cowl opening and bigger oil cooler will fix it. Raw footage - no editing.

Some of you asked for an update on the stretch project ands how it compares to the II. I had both planes out side by side ands shot some video. The stretch is 18 inches longer and 3 inches taller at the canopy. Same wing. Performance is similar. The stretch has a 2273 VW and the II has an 1835 VW. Big differences between the two - the stretch has a transponder and ADSB out (Trig), Nav/Strobes, ...

      I tested the static system by taping over both sides of the fuselage ports and adding a pin hole to one side. That calmed things down so I'm adding a bottle similar to what Cessna uses in a 172/182.

    Beautiful video. Raw footage is just fine. Perhaps an outside video of the plane itself would be nice. I'm 6'2" tall, does the IILS have a lot more leg room than the IIL? Does the IILS fly smoother with less pitching up and down movement?

    • @edbell3631
      @edbell3631 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@lynntatro7374 there is more legrooom in the Stretch. In addition, the canopy is taller. I’m 5’11” and bump up against the canopy in the IIL, but with the II LS, I have a couple of inches to spare. With respect to flying- didn’t have a chance to evaluate- but she seems to fly just like the IIL - all the controls felt like what I’m used to.

    • @edbell3631
      @edbell3631 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah - airspeed low, static was just vented to the cabin and I think I pinched the airspeed hose at the wing/fuse - still trouble shooting. The oil temp was the thing I was focused on. No issues on landing other than didn't want to go around! I put a bigger oil cooler on and cut the cowl opening a little larger. We'll see if that helps.

    Your stretch looks like it will be a nice traveller. In the past, there was some discussion about yaw. Some said the stretch would not fly straight and required a lot of foot work. Some raised the vertical but not the rudder. Do you have any comments on this with flying your II. Second question; how much tail wheel time did you have before first flight? You got me excited about the Sonarai again. Beautiful airplanes!

    • @edbell3631
      @edbell3631 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      N987EB flies hands off when trimmed except in yaw - she neutral in yaw but will depart if not corrected. The footwork becomes second nature after a while - quite different from my Cessna days. I had about 13 hours t/w in a Super Cub when I soloed 7EB. While I was legal - I certainly wasn’t ready! On the first t/o, I lifted the tail like I was taught in the Cub - big mistake. She abruptly veered right towards the lights and weeds. Fortunately, I was barely flying before I hit anything. Landings were scarier. The technique I settled on for take off and landings was 3 point every time - way better directional control.

      too much sink -- objective is to cross the fence at 80 mph with a stable approach -airspeed turned out ok, but the sink rate is pretty high when you cut the power - so added more power to arrest the sink.

    Assuming you're power off from base to final looks like it doesn't like to slow down, especially without flaps. Can you explain the tailhook landing? Does that just mean tail low but not 3 point vs a more level attitude wheel landing? what are the pros and cons of each? I assume that was your first flight since said it was your first stall. That landing had me puckering from this side of the screen! I've been told getting some Pitts time isn't a bad idea in preparation for flying one of these solo. Have you been able to improve keeping it straighter on landing?

    • @edbell3631
      @edbell3631 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've experimented with power off and with carrying a little bit of power both. I've been working on flying a little bit higher base to final to avoid dragging her in on final. Without power she loses altitude quickly but bleeding off airspeed can be a challenge. As usual - pitch for airspeed and throttle for altitude is the rule. Crossing the fence at 75 - 80 sets me up for a smooth landing. The tail hook is really three point landing but really planting the tail and pinning it down with elevator. Surprisingly, at least to me, is it stabilizes the ground track and keeps things aligned. My landings are getting better all the time. After about a hundred +, the landings improved a lot.
