Moving Giants
มุมมอง 4.9K2 ปีที่แล้ว
MOVING GIANTS. Rescuing massive locomotives and related railway equipment from the charismatic Steam Era was the challenge. Moving them to a place of safety by road for future generations to appreciate was the objective. The Sandstone team and their contractors made it look easy. So many things could have gone wrong. Nothing did.

Sad to see that The Government is not Interested to Preserving these Locos. Thankfull that Sandstone Estates is doing it so Future Children can see what a Steam Locomotive looked like.
I still have nice Black and White photos of Starking where She is in Humewood Station and under Steam along with Kalahari.
We have the Longest Narrow Gauge Railway Line in The World. It should be a National Treasure, something to be VERY PROUD of,but now it Lies in Ruins with Trees growing through the tracks. I travel next to the Avontuur line a lot. It could be a Great Tourist Attraction. But for some Reason Our Current Government just turns a Blind eye. Sad,but True. NV. South Africa 🇿🇦
On the continent we used Diesel engines. The ponderous Empire was clearly no more innovative in the 1930s.
Die Ford bakkie is n 1935 model met n 1936 model se rims. Die 1935 modelle het nog draad skeek wiele gehad.
Müzük gürültüsünden tadı kaçmış.Bir şey yaptığını sanıyor zavallı.
How could the T72 be purchased in the 1970s by the SANDF? Doos.
Excellent explanation of the working of the machine!
This T-72 apparently has a 125mm European gun and sub machine guns according to this 'expert'.
Thanks , love it !!
Is this Elizabeth from Thomas And Friends?
My uncle worked for a company that built the gearboxes for the ratels in the 80s. Every gearbox was tested to the equivalent (swinging a heavy flywheel), to the equivalent of throwing it into reverse at 100km/h. And the gearbox had to pass, and remain 100% operational.
Fond memories of my many visits there....🤩🤩
Brilliant video 👍👍👍
4 cylinder - 2 speed HI/LO... hot stuff
Wow so beautiful to see such number of oxen’s
Nice car
Wwhay a vehcle i was the drover of one of them ln ops modoler from 2ssb to 32 batalioin
So ,does the cabin have heating?
Yes it took some effort operating a steam car but you didn't have to buy gas and you didn't have to buy batteries all you needed was water and something that would burn so Quit your belly aching it was a whole lot better than having to Hitch a team of horses and everything that went along with that, the people back then sure thought so anyway
Simply awesome time and memories thank you. What date was this all filmed on please? Kind regards Tim Surridge
Many thanks for the comment. It was filmed in 1999. It's ironic that the Union Limited, which was an exercise in nostalgia, has itself passed into history.
@Witput yes isn't it just. I have footage taken in 2000 or 2001 of the union limited. Followed it from Albertinia where it was dropped at the station in the early hours by a pair of diesels. Waiting in anticipation early the next morning for the Garrett and 24 class to pick it up. Brilliant memories now sadly just that.

Mike, Greetings from Hong Kong. Anna
Great video! I'd love to visit Sandstone Estates one day. I've subscribed!
Magnificent
The sign warning about black smoke but I'm more concerned about all those guys breathing in the coal dust.
🇮🇳💐🥰🥰🌹♥️🍁💐🇮🇳
Too much power for an empty wagon
The idea was to see if that many oxen could be controlled, not what sort of load they could pull.

So beautiful
😒
How does one get to go for a ride in the Ratel?
You go to one of the regular events held at Sandstone where you will be able to ride in or on many fascinating machines.
@@Witput TY, look forward to checking it out.
Absolutely wonderful, thank you!
Major should build his own tank, the Scherman II....
Ha ha ha! Never thought of that!
Hp er ikke watt
Tremendous job keeping all machines up to scratch. Good job. Thanks. All the best. Michael and Tricia.
wounder the top speed
The 'Standard' was one of the earliest wagons that Sentinel manufactured pre dating the 'Super' The 'S' in the case of the Sandstone wagon stands for shaft drive.
Does anyone have info on the narrow guage in the Swartland that had terminated at Skool Street in Gouda, Western Cape? By the 1960s, it was decommissioned.
.
I was at School of Armour in about March of 1989 when a MAN truck arrived with a tank covered by a tarpaulin. We were told it was top secret Russian acquired tank. Two corporals, who were best friends, snuck our 2 troops into the Tank Vehicle Park to have a look at the tank. They had the keys for the hanger. I seem to recall that it was a T-72, and if so, it might have been an upgraded version of the T-72. Or it was a T-80. Does anyone know what it was we peered at in the dark of that hanger?
hey guys, I got an idea. Instead of using gas in our cars, lets use coal and water so we can only go 2 miles until we have to shovel more coal into a fire inside our car! That way our car is always on fire! Old people sure are strange.
