1. Glad you gave Alan Wake 2 more of a shot, Dan! Your critiques are valid, and it's definitely a story-first kind of game. Remedy even said that they consider gameplay to be the north star when designing Control, and story for Alan Wake, so any combat is really just there to keep the vibes/tension going or contribute to the story they're trying to tell. It's not for everyone, but it does a good job at what it's going for. Also, the main characters basically play the same way, so feel free to switch them up whenever. Alan's game is a bit more like a Silent Hill meets Twin Peaks, and Saga's is more Resident Evil crossed with Seven. 2. I played Animal Well. Like Lord said, it comes from VideoGameDunkey's (who I find hilarious, but YMMV) new publishing branch. He didn't develop it though. The actual developer is a guy named Billy Basso, who did EVERYTHING for it. He created the engine, designed the levels, did the art, the SFX, the gameplay...literally the whole thing and managed to squeeze it all into a 33mb (!) game (with Dual Sense support). He'd been showing it off at indie shows for a while, but Dunkey was the one who bit. The game itself is very much a discover-this-for-yourself kind of Metroidvania, telling you virtually nothing upfront and letting you explore, get new items/abilities, and figure out the intricacies of how they work. It also has multiple "layers," in that you can beat the game fairly quickly, but there's also a secondary completion level for people who want to dig in more, and then crazy cryptic ARG stuff for those who get REALLY involved. I feel like it's been slightly overrated by the internet, but it is a neat little oddity of a game. 3. Phasmophobia's a really clunky game, but a good time. It's also had a 2D mode for years now on PC, and it's built a pretty strong base that plays it exclusively that way. Personally, I think it loses a lot without VR, and I can only imagine how awkward it's going to be to play it on a console, but there's at least a bit of a proof-of-concept for how it'll work. 4. I'm trying to finish Baldur's Gate 3 right now, and man I don't click with that game. I don't have intricate knowledge of D&D rules, so leveling is confusing, the game gives very little guidance, and I feel like at any moment I'm going to get tossed randomly into some combat scenario that takes 2 hours for me to get out of. I appreciate what they're going for, but it's definitely not my favorite. I did enjoy Disco Elysium, but it's also not a Best Game Ever kind of thing. Honestly, given their criteria, I think it should still be Half-Life 2.

well, I don't need physical media to own a copy of a game - that hasn't changed. The whole concept of DRM being equivalent to temporary possession, DRM being licenses, is not only stupid but fraudulent and contempt for the history and tradition of sales/contracts. Well to be fair the discs don’t even really mean “ownership” anymore. In 2015 I had preordered the collectors edition of Fallout 4 that came with a metal disc holder. Inside of that was a game disc that contained nothing but a steam code. That’s what most companies do now, the disc acts as a code and has a one time use making it absolutely identical to buying the product online.

And PS5 only has the bundle version so it’s £90! WTF

What about the physical copies of the crew and stuff like that? Obviously it’s been delisted but does the disc still let you boot up the single player?

I don't get all the praise this game gets, it's so mediocre, the gameplay is boring as hell after about 1 hours, zero variation. Operations too was boring as hell, just replaying the same exact 6 missions over and over to upgrade a class that changes very little along the way. Wish I didn't buy it.
