7+ unique and useful BMW features
There are dozens of unique quirk and features in every generation of BMWs. I will mostly concentrate of F-generation (F10, F11, F07, F06 and F01 as well as F15/F16 etc) but these may apply to E or G series as well.
I wanted to highlight some things that are "common" but not very known as well as some unique features that I think 99% of the owners didn't even know existed.
So whether you want to find secret BMW F10 features or just want to know more about the features of F-series BMWs - welcome.

Building an ultimate F10 in 2024
มุมมอง 8K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
I do think that F10 is a true successor to now legendary E39 and in 10 year's time you will struggle to find one that hasn't been touched by the hands of 18-year olds. So I decided to build an F10 that would be worthy of staying in the museum and here's where we start. I am curious to how much time and money it will take to build an ultimate daily F10 so if you are too - subscribe and I will do...

BMW F10. Cost of ownership in 2024. 525xd

This specific video is relevant to owners of 2.0l diesel cars. 520d, 518d, 525d (bi-turbo). Can't vouch for others just yet. There is a lot of myths about BMWs being unreliable, but this is the second car I owned in a row, and they have proven to be nothing but great. Owning an F10/F11 in 2023 or even 2024 is probably still a great idea since their values at coming to rock bottom and they don't...
Buying an F10 BMW in 2023. What to look for

It seems that there is a lot of content with generic description of what kinds of issues one may face while looking for a used BMW 5 series, specifically F10/F11. The only problem with those being - they never really show how to check for these issues and unless you are an experienced mechanic, you have little to no chance to figure it out. BMW F10/F11 Base Audio upgrade. Adding an amplifier to the system

Many of the Non-US owner are facing the same issue: the base audio system in BMW F10/F11 (both pre and post Lci) is awful. Very detailed buying advice, a video I was hoping to find. I'm thinking about trading my 07 X3 for 2015-16 520/525d xdrive, I think it is better to go for b47 520 rather than n47 525, what is your opinion? So I wanted to ask, are vented seats worth it? Even though I think you rarely get to use that function considering you live in Finland. And, I read somewhere that heating function tends to fail on this generation. I was advised not to get base seats, but to go for either sport or comfort(although these examples are somewhat rare and cost a lot), as I do a dozen of 1000-1300km trips during the summer. That's a good looking and very well equipped f10 you have.

    • @asking_for_a_friend
      @asking_for_a_friend หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Thanks for the praise, appreciate it. I would definitely try to find a B47 but to be honest, N47 isn’t terrible. It’s just that B47 is better. As for the seats - they make or break a good 5 series. Base seats are terrible. Extremely uncomfortable, and make the whole experience awful. I had one F10 with sport seats and I really liked them. But you can’t get ventilated sport seats so your best bet is to find the ones with alcantara since it doesn’t heat up as much but it’s a rare option. Then come comfort seats. For my driving position they are less comfortable that sport seats (I sit very low) but still very good. If you get them with ventilation and/or massage they tend to lose some cushioning to accommodate for ventilators and pads for massage and thus become less comfortable 😅 ironically. But, i use ventilation all the time in summer. Even when it’s +20 outside but the car has been in the sun, the seats are hot hot. Plus on the long rides is saves by back from sweating. I did several 10,000km road trips in this car across Europe and it was fantastic (covering max 1450km per day).

      No-one is buying a 5-series BMW because of the engine :) Furthermore - there were no good engines on F-series (nothing spectacular). Even the M5 is nothing close to the sports car. 5 series is the "sportiest" sedan out of its competition, but definitely not because of its engine :) It's all about the options. A 550i with basic seats and no options is a piece of crap that can go fast on a straight line and is loved by 20-year olds because it makes noises. A fully loaded 520d, on the other hand, is an amazing daily driver.

    Hi, can you please tell me where you get the input wires to the amp, I am a bit confused. Do I need to get wires straight from the head unit all the way to the back or there are wires somewhere in the boot to plug into the amp. Thanks

    • @asking_for_a_friend
      @asking_for_a_friend 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sure, I’ll try to make it more clear. The wiring package came with the speakers I bought (aka all the wires I need). The signal is taken the following way: 1. You disconnect the cable from the under-seat bass units. Those take signal directly from head unit in base stereo. You connect a splitter (which is part of the wiring) to that original output cable and then you have 2 plugs: one is your input to the bass speakers and one goes straight to the amp. So in a way you take signal from the cable that was originally designed as input for the underseat bass, run it to the amp and then back to the bass speakers

    I am also in the process of making a top spec F11 530xd M sport 2013. It's already loaded but with this generation there's always something missing (which is always insanely expensive to retrofit). Here's some options that you missed, or that I didn't see or hear at least : - 5DP Park Assist - 4UR Ambient lighting - 535 Auxiliary heater - 319 Homelink - 6HF Rear Entertainment Professional - Complete Individual interior (prepare selling at least one kidney for that) - Other are software related, pretty irrelevant and maybe you alreday have them (TV function, internet, etc.) Also, with the xDrive, i would highly recommend having the same 4 tyres at each corners (brand, model, condition). With what you seem to have right now, depending on the conditions of your current tyres, you could be putting a lot of stress in the transfer case, that'll wear out pretty quickly in that case, until it brakes. Not dramatic, but not a cheap fix when that happens.

    • @asking_for_a_friend
      @asking_for_a_friend 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! Good catch! Outside of the 4UR I do miss those. Didn’t know F10 had 5DP but now I do 😅 as for the tires, I do run the largest “manufacturer recommended” setup for xdrive 245/40/19 front and 275/35/19 rear but they are indeed different model tires. When I got the rims I had to get the tires on those asap so I went with what was available and ran Michelin Primacy 3 at the front and PS4S at the rear. After 25,000+ km zero issues but I do plan to put same model tires next season as these would not last another summer 😃 UPD. Did the 5DP come with electric steering only? Cause if yes, then it’s a no-go for me. Same as turning rear axle and traffic jam assist (aka actual lane assist)

    • @DrivewiithTom
      @DrivewiithTom 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@asking_for_a_friend You're right ! 5DP only available on RWD with electric steering, sorry about that. The best way to not miss anything is to find the original price catalog (sedan LCI in your case). I have it in french if needed, but i'm sure you'll find it pretty easily. If no issue, it means that the tire wear is similar between front and rear axle. If you ever start to feel a slight jolt (very subtle) when you accelerate, it's a sign that the wear is uneven and that the transfer case is under abnormal stress. In any way, next time you'll change tyres you'll have to swap the 4 of them or you'll have immediate trouble ;)

    Interesting project. I worked at a BMW dealership for 14 years, retiring in 2010, and sold my project car, a 1992 E34 525iT (E36 M3 S52 engine), early in 2020 as I was just getting too old to do the maintenance myself on it. I've always liked the minimalistic approach to BMWs. Just give me only what makes the car reliable and still fun to drive. So, late last year my wife got hit in our 2007 Volvo S80 V8 (totaled) and needed another car so went looking at BMWs again. I found a 2014 535i, Space Gray w/Ivory White Napa leather, owned by a BMW club member with an impeccable maintenance history (99k miles) and all receipts. It is the M-Sport version w/Driver Assistance package, Lighting package, and Premium pack. The only other options are the Sport Automatic transmission, Multi-contour seats, and heated front seats. It's a very clean car with PPF added to the front, hood, and mirrors so still looks like new plus a new set of Pirelli's (hate run flats). I don't think I still know exactly how everything works. The only things I've replaced are the rubber windshield cowl panel which was cracked from age and front control arms, as I felt some bumping at low speeds. I also had the dealer do an oil change and they said the oil pan gasket was leaking and wanted $1900 to change it! Good thing it's not an Xdrive as the cost was over $4000! BMW still manages to get you at some point. I looked at the oil pan gasket myself and just considered what I saw to be normal for a BMW with 99k miles on it. Good tip about the door handles although mine are still perfect. Will be watching your project. Good luck!

    Its pretty crazy how many insanely expensive 'common' faults BMW 5 series have of this year model. Being a volvo guy for 10 years ive been looking at the 5 series and mercedes 250cdi from 2012 and it seems the merc is the superior car in terms of failure points, alot less on it. Id stick with my 2012 xc60 but damn i cant find it comfy to drive at all despite it being in perfect condition, a shame really.

      @@smiIingman before my first F10 I was very close to getting a 2010 XC70. Almost pulled the trigger on it but then tested an F10 (520d from 2010) and changed my mind immediately. I bought a V50 Volvo recently as a spare and I can say that it’s whoever designed it was not thinking of self-service. Basic maintenance of the BMW engines is super easy, anyone can do it (oil, filers, etc). On a Volvo it takes time and dedication :) as for the failure points, 95% of BMW owners never notice these. But if you want to really experience a car the way it was designed - these have to addressed. I’d say Volvo is a mean of transportation, BMW is a car I truly enjoy driving. It’s 100% subjective and my opinion might be the opposite of yours, but we are all entitled to have one :) PS. Mercedes is usually 50% more expensive in terms of spare parts since there are way less aftermarket producers and you are very limited in options for many of them

      @@asking_for_a_friend Thanks for the reply, i never found the volvos i own to have been tricky to service tbh, ive a 940, -00 s70, 2005 v70 d5 and now the xc60 but i guess when you've been with a brand long enough anything on it starts to feel pretty simple so im likely just biased here. That is indeed one thing i was thinking of with the merc, they are far more rare and uncommon on the roads than BMW's. Theres a guy who lives just short of 20km from me whose whole job is to take apart BMW's and sell them for spare parts, guy makes a great living that way. The best volvo in terms of drive feel ive driven is my good ole turbo 940, the s70, v70 and xc60 all share similar characteristics, pretty basic at the end of the day, my xc60 does have a software update to where it theoretically has 240hp and it definitely is *fast* but the 4wd isn't working because the thing that converts power to the rear has had its splines sheared. But yeah, ive been eyeing high miler 5 series because my reasoning is that surely a high miler would've likely had many if not all type-faults adressed and i hear the diesels last just as much as volvo and merc diesel engines.

I too live in finland and one thing which bugs me about the things ive read about 2011-2014 bmw 5 series that apparently the webasto isn't actually heating the engine, only the cabin. I find that to be insanely weird design, my xc60 has remote function for the webasto which heats engine and cabin and man i do feel spoiled by it.

    • @asking_for_a_friend
      @asking_for_a_friend 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@smiIingman there might be a slight misunderstanding of how webasto's work there. From what I know, webasto is only heating the coolant of the car and it is usually connected to the climate control so it heats up the interior, yes, but it also warms up the engine. I had a webasto on my 525xd and the coolant was always warm (which is very important since oil warms up faster). On my current 530d I have the "engine heater" but it's kind of useless since it takes 2-3 hours to warm up the oil due to its inefficiency and it has to be plugged in the outlet to do so. On a webasto-equipped BMW I warmed up the car in 30 minutes when it was -24 outside :)

    Nice car m8, looking forward to buying a 35d next year. You should look in to replacing the vibration damper as this is one of the main reasons for main bearing failure. Also let somebody check your Oil Pressure in Idle if its under 1 bar it should be replaced (probally with a upgraded oilpump). Something you should do regardless if you want a stage 1 or not is to deactivte the egr on the software side. As it causes Soot deposits in the intake manifoild and inlet channels. Which reduces power and if some of the soot is lose it can fall in to the engine... Also the Small Turbos on the 25d and 35d are the main reason for torque as the Big Turbo comes in at over 3k RPM

      @@mono9237 Moin, erstmal vorhab ich bin auch nur ein Hobbyschrauber und hab versucht mir recht viel Wissen zu dem N57/N47 zu holen von vorallem Ditupa, H2 Motors etc. ich meine damit die Riemenscheibe / Schwingungsdämpfer. Diese wird nach langer Zeit / hoher Laufleistung porös. Das kann dazu führen das die Kurbelwelle mehr schwingt was die Chance auf einen Lagerschaden erhöht. Wenn man in den Ditupa Videos schaut empfehlen die bei so ca. 200tsd. die zu tauschen. Ich konnte die bei meinem e90 mit N47 recht leicht kontrollieren ob die schon porös ist / Risse hat. Beim N57 im F10 kann das natürlich schwerer sein die einfach zu sehen. Ich würde den Öldruck einfach mal checken lassen. Kann man leider nicht auslesen da der N57 nur einen Öldruckschalter hat und kein Sensor 🤦. Wenn der über 0.9 Bar ist im Leerlauf muss man noch nichts machen. Laut H2 braucht man keine Upgrade Ölpumpe sondern eine Orginale ist auch ausreichend. Ditupa sagt auch ist kein muss kann aber auch nicht schaden und MIK vertraue ich auf keinen Fall die haben nur Schlechte Bewertungen und machen mehr Clickbait als Infomativen Content. An sich sind die Motoren ja sehr solide gibt ja auch viele mit 400+ tsd. KM. und solange die Steuerkette nicht rasselt würde ich die auch nicht tauschen. Pleulager sind ja leider bei dem ein Glückspiel selbst wenn man nen super neue Scwingunsdämpfer hat und eine Upgrade Ölpumpe kann das immer noch passieren. Aber mindestens. 8000€ für eine präventive Motorüberholung muss man auch erstmal haben ^^. Ich würde die nicht tauschen aber da müsste man wohl mit BMW Fachwerkstätten sprechen wie H2.
