Smoky Freelander (This is the worst it has been) - Bad MAF? Any help or comments really welcome!
มุมมอง 23K11 ปีที่แล้ว
Hold the RMP around 2 and there is smoke. Its worse after starting after its been standing for a few hours. This is the worst it has been, when it's colder it does run a little better. Smoke looks to be white / Grey. There is no smoke when driving normally just poor performance. The garage seam to think it could be piston ring damage!? Other Symptoms - All cylinders are equally running slightly...

Just went for an off the road drive when met up with another random fellow Off-Roader. Apparently thought the Freelander would not survive this lane let alone the one we met him down... Great day had by all!

Freelander High Pitch Noise.mp4

Constant strange noise from my Freelander TD4 2003 when warm? Changes and goes higher in pitch for a couple of seconds after I turn the Engine off. Only just started to happen... Could it be the Fans have part seized or maybe belts? Does not change in pitch when I change RPM. I do have a small oil leak from a turbo hose, replacements and EGR Bypass ordered before this noise started... Any Ideas...

Привет, проблема решилась?
Freelander 💪💪💪💪💪
Amazing cars. Great vid and music.
Props that a lot of fun can be had off-road with proper tires and without low range.
*What the happened ? Change engine ?*
Hi, The problem never really went away even with new injectors, crank case breather mod + other related parts and even a new turbo (fitted as the other one failed and engine ran away!) The car now has a different engine fitted last year due to the crank shaft breaking
Great video.
just cycled down and up this lane today wanted to see if i could drive it in my defender i chose not too :-/ there's a tree down half way up you would need to drive up the righthand bank to pass it their were some fresh tracks tho to be fair and the ruts looked much deeper now in 2020...
Maybe you have a misfire
Great job!!!
High power, light weight and a very good 4wd system. It's an idiot that underestimates these wee things.
Any update?
Hello Shadows! Have same problem:) You solved that?
Hiya. I never truley got to the bottom of it in the end. It was better after injectors were changed but still smokey and lumpy at that rpm. I just lived with it until the crank shaft snapped at the beginning of this year. Now waiting for better weather to replace the engine. Have you tried some of the surgestuons in other comments as they all could solve your issue. Good luck!
Just for anyone wandering it’s actually the crank case breather filter I did mine the other day 20 min job only difficult part is the bolts at the back by the bulk head !!
This was not the issue with mine as I have the BMW crank case filter installed however yes this smoke can be caused by this and its easy to change at home. Never fully resolved the issue in the end despite changing almost everything inc injectors.
shadows9001 loom to the fuel pressuresensor
What camera did you film with?
cwuzii just my Samsung s6 phone
The Wight smoke is so much fuel being pumped in due to the air mass flow sensor being faulty
I have the same problem been told by the garage it the air mass flow sensor
Leak around the egr valve
Give it some bloody power
Good offroad team!!
Nice off roading but couldn’t stand the sound track
I doubt you look at comments this old, but if you do - what roofrack is that on the black freebie? Looking for one for mine!
Lord Rahl - I think if i recall correctly its made by brownchurh. occationally see them on ebay but dont think you can get them new anymore.
Did you manage to fix this?
High pressure pump?
Wasnt that, Still have the original fitted from filming this 3 years ago. Its got better since changing the injectors and more recently the turbo but still pretty smokey at the same RPM
The high pressure pump has decided to go last week - 3 /4 years after this video
PCV valve
The PVC valve has been upgraded to the BMW part :-)
shadows9001 Did upgrading the PCV breather to the BMW part get rid of the smoke?
shadows9001 Did the smoke go away?
link for the img file ????
Hi, This was made back in 2011 My n900 no longer works and the image file has long since been lost / misplaced / deleted. Thanks for your interest
Bonjour J'ai le même problème que vous. Vous avez trouvé la solution ? Je suis de France... Cognac Hello I have the same problem as you. You found the solution? I am from France... Cognac
Hi, I still have this issue . Its got better since changing the injectors and more recently the turbo but still pretty smokey at the same RPM. I have given up with it and just live with it. It burns itself off in a minute or so.
The might Freelander with road tiers!!
im goin to change the glow plugs as they are only cheap, the bad starting and then the smoke have to be connected, does yours clear of smoke after a while?
+Carl Grenfell Hopefully that's all it is, fairly easy to do too. Yes, the smoke does clear for me its only on start up at around 2.5k RPM I think mine is injector related. Currently battling with an engine management light coming on under acceleration or going up hills. Hoping its the fuel rail pressure sensor
@@Naughty_Squad Haha I know! Just replaced the engine on this one due to a snapped crank shaft at 185K miles
my td4 is like that, is it hard to start? mine is..... did you get to the bottom of it?
+Carl Grenfell I never really did, I have just got on with it. Recently I discovered a poor connection to one of the injectors so may be an idea to check these as this caused starting issues. It could also be that the glow plugs need replacing... Its still a bit early to for me to think about everything it could be and everything I have tried... Ill get back to you if I think of anything else!
As a 04 kv6 owner... internal coolant leak? Wow... that's a lot of smoke. Ugh. If you have a Freelander, and it's running well, best advice I can give you is to check the coolant level weekly. Never let the tank go empty. Ever. Jasco - you've got a great handle on this - cylinder sleeves, and head gasket... also, that damn thermostat that's in the V of the engine under the intake - damn thing is plastic. You have to be under the hood with a Freelander. It's mandatory if you love the car like we do. There are none on the road here anymore... it has become unique.
If this is a TD4, I would quickly suggest to replace the PCV valve to a newer redesigned one under the item no: 11127799224. The clogged up PCV forces the oil through the seals of the turbo and burned by the engine. Mine did the same after being on idle (smoke lasted depending on the lenght of the idle) eg I left the engine on idle for 3mins, I got clouds of blueish smoke for 3 minutes. On the long run, had no smoke at all (maybe the engine burned almost all of it while on torque?) Anyway first I thought the worse (rings-turbo)
Stephen Lakos You mean this one pt.aliexpress.com/item/Crankcase-Breather-Valve-Oil-Separator-For-BMW-E46-E60-E61-E81-E83-E87-E90-E91-X3/32302128031.html?http_swift_null=
Yepp! This is a newer version and fits perfectly, although I would spend €60 for a Febi or similar than a Chinese make.
white smoke is burning oil.problem seems to be piston rings or bore scratch or crack
ave looked at yours the same as mine know not to over rev on startup injector
Why brag that it can do this with road tires? do not be cheap, put suitable tires on so the freelanders would not look so desperate behind the Defender with proper tires ... PS: not a freelander hater
Lubos Reho Um dude, this was ages back when I was saving to put on BFG AT's on with pacers. I have since had it lifted + many other mods done (the black Freelander). the fact I posted about having road tyres was not to brag at all but to show it was still capable even with original tyres fitted. The Defender also owned by me kept eating my wallet!!
@@shadows9001 hello do you still have the Freelander. I'm going to modify mine for off-road. Any good places to look to start. Looks great fun
Love it, those little freelanders do really well
Freelander. Can your vehicle bring you to the ends of the Earth? Mine can.
In cases where there's also slight coolant loss, for the KV6, the cylinder sleeves are micro-vibrating, the original ones installed when the vehicle left the factory line, and in the process, the force strikes the head gasket leading to a tiny coolant weep in to the combustion chamber - therein leads to your white smoke and coolant loss. The way to fix this is not just the head gasket. I know folks who've done only the head gasket only to have it blow again as the root cause was not addressed. Also replace the liners/sleeves and re-seal everything, entrust that task to a good engine reconditioner. Remember you only want to do this job once so look for the root cause if your symptoms are as described earlier.
Civic 2008 same noise .. what was it ?
Same noise on my 2008 civic what was it . Plz help me on this..
fixed mine today with tape and cleaning parts are easy to source
Don Murdoch You fixed yours with tape? How exactly?
look for al hoses 2inch diameter there mite be a split hence the engine will smoke and blow smoke , common fault on all models
Hi Shadows9001, have you fixed this issue with your Freelander and if so, what was the cause? Regards, Jasco.
As don has suggested, check the all the black hoses that are 2inch. This produced black smoke when mine spit a few years ago. I have never solved the white smoke issue - its better but still there. I have replaced injectors, fuel rail, connectors, MAF - the list goes on. I have not changed my fuel filter yet but its been surgested that I may have slight piston ring damage. I'm just living with it now....
I have a early 1.8 5Dr Freelander which is standard besides the Geoolander A/T tyres is it still suitable to take on something like this or do I need to go down the sump guard & lifted route?
Hi, Thanks for checking out my video. If you take a look at my other video Freelander and 90 Fun, this was taken down the same lane (all be it a dryer) when both freelanders were pretty much stock. Mine (the black one) just had bull bars and roof rack / standard tyres + Height and the red, an early 1.8 just had AT tyres. I needed a tow once before the camera was out as I slipped into the ruts and bottomed out. If you do intend to do anythig like this make sure you have another 4x4 aound to offer assistance should you get stuck. A lift and a sump guard I would recommend for anything more extreme.
trankille la ballade ! pas trop gros les trous !
It just goes to show what our Freebies can do. I have had a few red faces from Defender owners when they say you cant do that!! Interested in the Hawkley Hangers track. I have lifted mine 2" same as yours and fitted a home made sump guard. Ronbox synergy2, what a difference. General Grabber AT's. Have a exhaust/tank guard to fit, bit of mod needed, and looking at RokSliderz. It seems as if I am same area as you. Didn't realise Freelander stuck...Never was you. Really impressed me to the Freelander earlier on.
I would be checking the lift pump in the tank also! Mine had same issues with rough running and white smoke, turns out I had fractured the pickup unit!
If the diff mounts are shot, it's usually caused by a VCU on it's way out. They are a 70k mile service item in reality. Lookup Bell Engineering as they are highly recommended on the Landy forums.
took my freelander off road the other week along with 2 friends who had a defender and a discovery, only got mine so far as i didnt want to risk damaging it through lack of ground clearance at the front , but it proved my 4wd is still working properly the vcu and all that
