As a Gen Xer now in my 50's, with the kids off to college I've found that I have some much needed time on my hands to do what is FUN. The Modest Audiophile is a place to discuss a modest/affordable way to get the best music listening experience without having to spend $1000's & $1000's on constantly upgrading your system, chasing the absolute best version/pressing of an album and determining what is essentially good enough to make you fall in love with your favorite artists once again. Come join me as I sift through my music collection to either upgrade from a ripped CD 16bit file to a Hi-Res 24bit file or just go strait to a great yet affordable vinyl release.

How does The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary stack up against its 2011 release?
Reason for preferring the Eversolo over the denefrips is simply because there’s no extra connections through the RCA
Love old ,but new 3d fabric on window.....
I Love this album and have for decades! My favorites are the "Sneaking" Trilogy. Those first three are amazing played in succession. Palmer was a great singer and TOTALLY underrated!!!
Try Reprise MS-2200. ‘Rejuvenation’ (1974) by the Meters. Must have been some session overlap at Sea-Saint Studios. Another recorded in the same vein and time with the Meters is “Wild Tchopitoulas”. It is on Island Records, too, I think. You will keep dancing!
Awesome! Thanks. I certainly will check that out. Thanks for watching!
An incredible album. I was only 13 and wore it out. Followed by Little Fest’s Waiting for Columbus.
I love Waiting for Columbus! That was my first Little Feat album! Great stuff!
That sounds like a Marimba to me on “Hey Julia”
Ah Ha!! Thanks!!
I love my A6 but I sure would make use of a sub out Jack. I use rca to the sub but that restricts its placement.
I was a big fan of this album going back to the 80's when I got into Little Feat. It's brilliant! Lowell George is one of my music heroes.
Whats so funny was written by Nick Lowe
I did not know that. Thanks!! Great tune!
I have the translucent green version. Fantastic.
One of my favorite albums of all time.
Is the only way to create a playlist from the track listings? And then add each individual song.... I can't figure out how to add entire albums with one click. For example, let's say you have a file folder with 100 songs and you want to create a playlist with just those 100 songs NOT the entire library/tracks catalog.... Is there not a simple create playlist button without having to select each song individually? Thanks for any info
Nice review! Thanks. Great stuff! I'm going to go listen to the album again myself after watching this. Did you know that Ric doesn't sing lead on all the songs? As was normal for The Cars, Ric and Ben shared lead vocal duties on Candy-O. Ben Orr sang lead on several of the songs on the album including Let's Go, It's All I Can Do, Candy-O and You Can't Hold On Too Long. I love his voice and always liked it better than Ric's. I really hope you are able to snag a copy of their first album from Rhino like you wanted. I'd love to hear your review for it if you do!
Thanks for the kind words Roger!! Yup, I'm a fan of Ben's vocals as well. A big fan. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up the debut album if it comes out this year. I do have a "January" release from Rhino coming in the mail on Monday, so I'm excited to share that next week, hopefully. Thanks for watching!
timeless
I wonder what makes a truly good hi fidelity recording .Good balance and careful engineering. I think the mind plays tricks on the ears as newer remastered recordings all sound artificial after the fact of the original release. As far as how you listen in any playback equipment .The values will differ. All these analytical videos are therefore moot.
As always a great video. This is one of my favorite albums of all time. I have a white label promo and the 2017 remaster that has the bonus tracks. But I think I’m finally going to pull the trigger and buy this one also. How can I not trust the review from a fellow New Englander 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the kind words, Michael!! I'd be curious what your thoughts are on Rick's vocals sitting a little bit back in the mix compared to the promo copy you have. Yup, this album is seriously growing on me. Thanks for watching!
I’ve owned this device for about 6 months now. I prefer the DAC of my Rega Elicit mk5 in stead of the Eversolo DAC. Quite remarkable that you favour the Eversolo DAC over a denafrips. I don’t care that much about the screen. The best thing of the Eversolo is that it does hires Apple Music.
My Denafrips was the entry level Enyo. Although a fantastic DAC, I just kept coming back to the Eversolo internal DAC. Now..... that isn't to say I won't be upgrading to a better DAC in the future. 😁 I'm currently waiting on a new set of speakers. So the next modest upgrade will have to wait. Thanks for watching!
I still use a vacuum record cleaning machine with manual turning of the record. I apply the cleaning fluid to the record which i rotate on a work turntable thoroughly scrubbing in the cleaner while rotating the record. I can do a better job of manually working in the cleaning fluid instead of the machine doing it. I then spray the dirty liquid off the record with distilled water and pop the record on the vacuum machine, screw it down, turn it on and rotate slowly. It might seem like a lot of work but i enjoy doing it because of the results. This is what i use........... A vacuum record cleaning machine. A work turntable. A mold release agent (Power cleaner) Record cleaning fluid. Record preservative.
Hi Robert! I get it.. Routines are great, and I'd bet you probably get an equal or better clean than I do. Thanks for watching!
It is possible to use HQ player and Roon at the same time. To use HQ player and Audirvana, you need to install another source.
Was that picture on the wall behind you taken at the Middle East Upstairs?
If you are referring to the print with The Beatles in it, it is of The Cavern in Liverpool. This is a print of a painting. Thanks for watching!
I have the Bookends & Bridge Over Troubled Waters on Mobile Fidelity and they have amazing sound quality and packaging.
They really are excellent. I wish more of my go to records sounded this good. Thanks for watching!
As far as used or new reissue record purchases go, do you make purchases from discogs, eBay, reissue label sites like Rhino, Mobile Fidelity or Analogue Productions, or your local record shops or pretty much all of the above? You've found some great albums for a good price. Love the 1st Manassas album!
Hi Dennis. All of my used record purchases have been at a brick and mortar record store. It's like going on a field trip. You never know what you're going to get. Yup that Manassas album is sooooo good. I can't get enough of it at the moment. Thanks for watching!
I don’t think the audio is bad at all
Think about adding a small vocal mic to your presentation so were hearing just you and not the room too. Maybe one of those little black boxes with the LED on them that you see a lot of YT'ers using. That would make one of the best vinyl review new channels on YT in 2024 even better.
Great insight. However seems that unit has touch too many functions. So user can get messed into options instead of plug ,choose and play the music.
soundstage is how i listem. saw Buffalo Springfield in 1966 all of them are great. Alice Cooper is one i dont have. love 120 and 150 because they are so forward and spread out. Berni is to god of music. Canned Heats double album w/Refried Boogie spreads the music. i have tubes up front now and a Musical Concepts mastered Hafler 280XL driving my new Yamaha 600As. massive SS. my Lencp 70 just grabs any music and throwers it around the room. i will probably buy the Alice. i have almost 10k records and love music
Thanks for watching! That Buffalo Springfield show must have been amazing! Ha! I need to throw more music around my room. You won't go wrong with the Welcome To My Nightmare. Enjoy!!
How is that Cars album ? I’ve been going back and forth about this one as I have a white label promo and the 2017 remaster so not sure I need a 3rd copy but it is one of my favorites
Thanks for watching Michael. Well I've got to tell you that as soon as I saw your comment I was dropping the needle down to give this another listen. I can't compare it to the promo or 2017 copy. However I will say this exceeded my expectations in just about every way. I had just listened to Smokin' by Humble Pie so my ears were in a different place for sure. Candy-O?? Its got punch! Nice big soundstage and an excellent, excellent image. I really enjoyed the listen as this took me back to that time as young kid. I'd say if you are a fan then buy with confidence. I'll most likely do a review on this later in the week. Now I have to get more Cars from Rhino High Fidelity. Good stuff!!
been nice if you had pointed out where to get the password/username for mapping in windows. as you was on the method two option, if you had opened the menu option people may have got a bit more insight, good review , talk thru. love my A6 having had a bluesound node 2i before ,this outshines it only thing i found a bit disappointing is when on Radio Pardise, most of the time its in Flac then sometimes it's MQA, whereas the node is always MQA, no big loss
Thanks for watching Ken!
I know nothing about MQA, but could it be the actual source file from RP? I'm curious.
@@Ruger62 Not really as I have my Bluesound Node 2i running at the same time and guess what it's playing MQA and the A6 is playing Flac. So must be a A6 Problem ???, What do you get when listening to Radio Paradise, Flac or MQA ( that's if you choose the MQA service from RP) on your A6 ??
I went down the same path. Looked at others like Cocktail Audio and HiFi Rose. I went with the DMP-A8 and installed the Beatechnik linear power supply upgrade and a Samsung 4TB SSD. I really think it preforms excellent as a media server (I have all DSD files, ripped SACD's and converted redbook CD's / high rez PCM). With having all DSD files and with the AKM velvet sound DAC chip set, in the A8, that I am very, very close to same analog sound as my vinyl set-up without the hassle. I have the A8 feeding an Accuphase E-4000 integrated.
Is that the LHY power supply you've installed? Did it make a noticeable difference?
Thanks for watching Joey! I'm intrigued with the Beatechnik linear power supply. Very intrigued. How did it effect the soundstage, imaging, etc?
@@TheModestAudiophile-oq2hy The upgraded power supply made a difference in widening the sound stage. I did A/B comparisons against a Cary Audio DMS-700 (~$7k). Both use an AKM chipset. After setting the filter on the A8 to Slow Roll-off, I had a good match with the DMS-700's, but the DMS-700's sound stage was larger. On some of Art Pepper's SACD's the drum cymbals would be projected on the outside of my speakers with the DMS-700 and on the inside of my speakers with the A8. Upgrading the power supply really pushed the sound stage out and made it very difficult to hear a difference between the two digital sources. In the end I kept the A8 and sold the DMS-700.
I thought A8 already comes with linear power supply?
@@edchiam9193 No it has a switched mode power supply. The new A10 has a linear power supply.
I use jriver
Ehh, I have a 3RD US WLY pressing that blows the 2016 remaster out of the water.. So ill pass. We all know this new pressing as well as the 2016 is digitally sourced. The last true "analog" pressing of the album was 2003. They claim bernie cut from the original tapes, not sure if I believe it though. Some have looked at the wavelength and claimed its digital as well..
Genuine comment... I have mine going into audiolab 6000a via RCA and have the amp doing sub out to a rel sub. It sounds great. Am i missing something?
Hello, does anybody know if the vu meters work if i use digital out and fixed volume 100%?
Not sure about the volume, but the VU meters worked regardless if I was using the internal DAC and going RCA to the Amp or going out the USB to a denafrips and then out to the amp.
I can’t seem to get sufficient volume out of the dmp a6 running it as a pre amp via rca cables into a Schitt Vidar 2 using Wharfedale Linton speakers streaming thru Tidal…some tracks are better than others but as a whole even at full volume which is “0” on the A6 the volume just seems anemic compared to my other components not to mention that I’ve never owned any equipment that I could run at absolute full volume without being unbearably loud or causing distortion… also doesn’t this mean I have 0 headroom…yes the volume settings for digital and analog on the a6 are at maximum…any suggestions ?
In the A6’s settings, make sure the volume passthrough mode is turned on and ReplayGain source mode is turned off. I’m using XLR out on my A6, and it is the loudest source I’ve ever had.. 🤷♂️
@@canderson7081 I also noticed that if I turn off volume pass through mode and use the A6 as a preamp, then turn the volume pass-through mode back on, the volume may not come back to 100% until I restart the streamer. Just FYI… also make sure the analog and digital volume limits are all set to maximum, and restart the unit. 😉
Very nice review. I have this on CD, same CD since probably the 80s. One of my favorite Christmas albums of all time. I’ve been listening to it almost daily for the past wk or so. Guaraldi, underrated jazz pianist, was the perfect choice to put music to the Peanuts.
Good rundown.
Thanks for watching Joe!
The Long Run is an underrated Eagles album.
You can say that again. Thanks for watching.
The Eversolo is as good as Denafrips (if not better!). And no, the Denafrips is not "more analog", i challenge you or anybody for a dual blind test in a controlled environment! Ther's no such thing as "Hi Res", adding bits just lowers the noise flood which is already better than human earing at 16 bits.
Please try listening to a DSD soundtrack. Something in the last 25 years. Analog recordings are not a great source of Hi resolution. Recordings made in 96/24 are higher resolution. If you can’t hear a difference, it’s time to improve your speakers or electronics. DSD512 is just Amazing!
@DaveMichalakChannel You seems confused about source material and the media itself. Do an honest blind test: take a DSD source file and convert it to PCM 16/44.1 and you'll see, whatever the sound system...
Nice space/room, nice equipment, and nice everything. I see that you are a lover of rock, which is nice. Me too, but lately, in the last 15 years, I have switched toward jazz and classical.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I've been getting into jazz a bit as well. If it has a great soundstage and imaging I'm usually interested. Thanks for watching!
Mark, why are you retiring your Denafrips Ares II/Enyo ? Keep it in your audio chain. I am still quite impressed with my DMP-A6 after 16 months - but when I added an external DAC as an optional tonal selection, my soundstage became wider, deeper and immersive. Happy listening ! 🔊🎶
Good pic up there, Mark. I mentioned my reason in the 4 months review that I did. I found that, in my set up, my soundstage became larger and a bit more immersive that the Enyo. I was a bit surprised to say the least. With that said, I'll box it up and sell it. The proceeds will go towards a turntable upgrade. I'm sure I'll be looking at a better DAC down the road like the Pontus 15th or something. Not too expensive..... For now I'm pretty happy with the DMP-A6. Thanks for watching!!
@ Really enjoying your content Mark ! I made a comment after watching your 4 month review of the Eversolo - backtrack to view my remarks. The Charlie Brown Christmas in 24/192 Max FLAC on Tidal is superb. Thanks again, Happy Holidays 🎄🔊🎶
@@markmancuso8769 Thank you for the kind words Mark.
Can get longer USB cables than 15 feet. I got an 8 metre from Supra and it worked perfectly. I think even twice that length will work good. I no longer use it because my system has changed, but I could if I wanted to.
Oh I agree, one can certainly use a longer cable for sure. I should have said the industry states that you will hear diminishing returns on anything longer than 15 feet. Thanks for watching!
I own the DMP-A6 and use it mainly as a server. Like you, I have a great deal invested in digital files and have them loaded up on a 2TB nvme ssd inside the DMP-A6. Works wonderfully. My main goal was to get "bit perfect" data going to my dac. Prior to the Eversolo, I was using a laptop and other computers running JRiver as my player, but I could never get the signal to come out of the computers in its natural state. The computer's OS kept down sampling to 16bit 44.1khz. I've tweaked the OS's, both Linux and Windows, but nothing worked. The Eversolo, out of the box, solved that issue. How they do that, I'll never know. As for the internal dac of the Eversolo, I found it flat sounding compared to my Denafrips Pontus II. The Denafrips is 3D with depth I've not experienced before. It has layering and separation of instruments that I didn't get from the internal Eversolo dac. So, keeping the Pontus II. I don't subscribe to any streaming service, however I do listen to the free Paradise Radio station every morning when I do my workout. It sounds ok, but my personal library sounds better for critical listening and enjoyment. I've had my Eversolo for about a year now and intend to keep it. No longer have physical media like LPs or CDs. It was great to get rid of all that clutter.
Thanks on the feedback on the Dac , I wonder how it compares to a Geshelli J2
Great comment! Well..... now I see you have a Pontus II which I'm sure sounds outstanding! In my listening room the DMP-A6 did outshine the Ares II/Enyo. So I'll pack that up and hopefully get a fair amount of $$ for it. I'll use the proceeds (and add to it I'm sure) towards a turntable upgrade. I agree that, like you, I've found that my HiRes files on the internal SSD sound superior to the streaming. However I'm using the streams as a close alternative to determine if I want to purchase that recording on vinyl or not. Thanks for watching!
Just a question please, seems A6, A8 to like lossless files, I can see no where referencing lossy formats , I have a lot of stuff at opus high bitrate VBR ( I can not hear diff with medium bitrate ) , Seems Everrsolo doesn't do Opus, yet I can go rip them again to flac , but can't be bothered . Plus I will be upgrading my HT receiver etc next year ( so they can do most of this ) , Does any one know what lossy these can play . Also heard a 4Tb library can be slow to parse . Plus I could build a small server , to be controlled by phone app , can do room EQ to high std ,. My music set up is quasi independent of receiver , ie my amp has an home theatre mode , to be taken over by receiver chain
I’d really like to have a default power-on volume level. I have my stereo on a timer that turns on every weekday to wake us up. It’s great that the Eversolo resumes playing the last station selected, but the volume is also whatever was last set. This is bad for an alarm. My Node2i has an alarm feature, that tunes to a station at a selected volume at a set time. What I don’t like about the Node2i, is that it always powers up in silence. You must select something to play. I’ve had the Node for a couple years, and just got the A6 a few weeks ago. There’s pluses & minuses to each one.
The hunt will continue for a perfect device. I haven't found one. Well at lease for a modest amount of money. Thanks for watching and sharing!
Eversolo makes alarm clocks? 😅😉
@@HiFiMods Noooo..... I use my stereo as an Alarm Clock (ie.... it's set to turn on every morning) and I wish the Eversolo had a default power-on preset and volume level. What if the last time I played the stereo I had the volume really low or really loud.... then that's how it powers up at 5:50am!!
Modded BS Node N130 Huge improvement 😊
This guy needs to stop spending on his credit card. 😊
I also got the a6 and use the USB DAC out connection. I change DACs and able to use my different amp built in DACs
I'll be keeping the usb cable...... as I'm sure I'll get the itch to look at new DAC's down the road. For now I'm pretty happy with it. Thanks for watching.
I need a stereo device/dac that has multiple hdmi in and one or two out. Plus the normal dac options.
Check out cheapaudioman here on TH-cam. I'm sure he as a few videos of exactly what you are looking for. Thanks for watching!
@TheModestAudiophile-oq2hy haven't seen Randy have something with what I am looking for. But will have another look
@annebokma4637 I'm sure I may be mistaken, but I'm thinking Schiit may have something for ya.
@TheModestAudiophile-oq2hy l can't find anything like it on their web site
I've never heard such a meaningless rant from a man like a woman . What a waste of my time . Gimme a rebate .
Hey Mark 👋🏼 Just came across your channel and really enjoyed your overview of the Eversolo DMP-A6. You’ve got my endorsement and subscription 👍🏼 I’ve had a high level 7.1 home theater for two decades and have collected HiRez downloads, DVD Audio, SACDs for just as long. And high quality source material, whether it’s analog or digital, is everything. About 16 months ago, I got a great idea: put together a great two channel streaming system for critical listening. The DMP-A6 looked like an excellent entry point and it’s everything you have described. An excellent value, conveniently functional with the phone app, and it sounds great. I paired it with a set of Buchardt A500 active speakers and I was in audio heaven. Or so I thought. After reading, watching and listening to some very well known YT creators, how would an outboard DAC change the tonality of my system ? Keep the budget similar to the Eversolo, that should be easy. I explored so many delta sigma architectures, but R2R ladder DACs like the Denafrips Ares 15th and HoloAudio Cyan 2 were earning high universal accolades. Both units turned up at tmraudio.com but both were grabbed up within a day. Patience and perseverance paid off when I found a pristine HoloAudio Spring 3 KTE trade in for an amazing 40% off a brand new unit. Yeah, it blew my budget outta the water, but damnnnn ! The soundstage width and depth improved so dramatically, I thought my surround sound system was on in the background. Join me in the rabbit hole. Sell or trade your Denafrips Enyo and either move up to the Pontus 15th or start looking for a Spring 3 KTE. You won’t regret it. 🔊🎶
I dont use the DAC i use the HDMI output for DSD and PCM multichannel as a streamer to my multichannel processor.
