Zoom H2e vs Tascam Portacapture X6 self-noise testing. Quality good enough?
How is the self-noise of these recorders. Zoom H2 essential and Tascam Portecapture X6. Is there a significant difference, that is big enough, to make it a factor when buying one of these for ambience recordings?
My own answer is yes. Tascam X6 is quieter and that matters for me when doing these kind of recordings.

Tascam Portacapture x6 - Testing low cut settings in field recording.

The Field recording app in the Portacapture X6 suggests that nature is recorded with low cut 120Hz. I have tested all the low cut settings the Tascam gives us. Off - 40Hz - 80Hz - 120Hz - 240Hz. Video starts with 20 sec. in each setting, so you quickly can get an idea of how or if the different settings affect the recording. Then some longer snippets with the different settings. Testing this ultra portable setup. A clippy em272 microphone in the zoom f2 recorder. Recorded in 32bit float. I am surprised how much (self) noise I got from this. Both the microphone and the recorder should supposedly give me very low self noise. Or maybe I just misunderstood something and the noise is just as it could be expected. I had expected something else though.

      @@DavidBondeDanmark another point , that your new test might help verify, is the Clippy takes 5v of plug-in power and the Zoom f2 only supplies 2.5. Someone was saying on Reddit that when they use their Dpa without enough power they need to crank the gain too high to get enough sound

    Thank you for comparison. I own X6 but planning to buy H2e. What mode did you use on H2e? It has basically 4 mics vs. 2 mics on X6. So the noise is higher by default. Did you set X6 mics to XY or AB? Was H2e set to MS? It sounds a bit like MS that is not decoded? The way H2e mics are set, I think the good comparison would be: X6 mics to AB, 48/32bit vs. H2e to MS (front only), 48/32bit. Thanks! Have a good day

    • @DavidBondeDanmark
      @DavidBondeDanmark 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I tried to make it as close to each other as possible. Maybe I did it wrong. On the H2e I used the front mic only in 120 degrees. It was set to stereo and not MS. The X6 was in xy config. I see now that H2e was in 48/32 bit and X6 in 44/32. I dont fully understand MS recording so I left that out. Where I am at the moment in my recordings I dont want mess around too much in post. But let me do some recordings as you suggest.

    Seems like hum of distant sounds. I experienced similar feeling when I started recording. With microphones even quieter tham em272 I had this hum or noise. After a while I realised that this is just a mix of various distant and indistinctive sounds. Microphones are so much sensitive that the catch everything. Well, almost ;) With our ears we either do not hear it or our brains just filter out this ambient noise.

    The em272's have very low self-noise but are also very sensitive. The noise sounds like traffic, which can be heard from 5 miles away in some conditions. Would be interested to hear if you've done further testing and the results. Thanks!

    • @DavidBondeDanmark
      @DavidBondeDanmark 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are right. Think it boils down to that I didn’t really completely understand what 32 bit can do and what it can’t do.

 I have tested the setup (clippy and f2) under a huge pile of blankets as suggested. When I amplify that recording I do get a lot different kind of hiss than I this video. So you are most likely right that in this video it’s traffic or something else environmental.

      @@DavidBondeDanmark I think this sounds like what the world sounds like! Well, what the world sounds like when I monitor on headphones, probably at too high a level for any sense of realism. It also sounds like my Clippys. Which sound pretty similiar to my more expensive mics (but not stupid expensive like any Schoeps mic for instance). The Clippys produce a little more level at very low frequencies than my other mics though, so they probably get a bit more bass roll off when I edit them than the other mics will. I reckon you can rest assured your mic and recorder are not faulty in any way!
