Shad Fishing for Cod at Whitby

Fishing with Shads is great fun and can catch plenty of fish at Whitby. The aim of the video is to give an insight into the tackle to use and the methods of actually fishing the Shads. It isn't difficult to do, but is still a quite underused tactic on my Charter Boat. Why not give it a go next time you're out boat fishing......
Fishing a Big Spring Tide at Whitby
มุมมอง 133Kปีที่แล้ว
The last dates in the diary to get booked are the Spring Tides. I made this video to demonstrate that you can still have some great sport on the Spring Tides. It's all about controlling the tackle. The fish are still there, but you have to co troll the tackle properly to get consistent bites.
Sea Urchin Trip Information & Boat Tour

A short video aimed at anglers who haven't fished from Whitby before, or will be fishing/considering fishing on Sea Urchin for the first time. It covers the journey into Whitby, and suggests the best route to take, where to park, where to stay, where to eat and where to get bait from. Also a quick tour round Sea Urchin with the Skipper to show you what the boat has to offer.
Uptiding for Codling - Boosted Baits v Natural Baits
มุมมอง 13Kปีที่แล้ว
An unscientific test to look at the difference between fishing boosted baits against regular baits during a couple of hours fishing at Whitby. Some anglers swear by dipping their baits in a secret concoction they have made up. Does it really make a difference to your catch rate, or is it more of a confidence booster? This test was conducted using frozen squid and frozen Black Lugworm. Fresh/Liv...

Bait Fishing for Mackerel at Whitby
มุมมอง 8K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Everyone likes catching Mackerel. On Sea Urchin, we catch them for bait in the summer before we target the Codling & Ling. I regularly see some common mistakes that people make, who aren't familiar with the "Macky Bash"!. I had hoped to make a Shadding Video today, but the big tide and wind made the drift impossible. Hopefully, a couple of pointers for those who are new to boat fishing.

Whitby Cod Fishing - Uptiding Tactics and Tips

A video for boat anglers visiting Whitby in the winter for some Uptiding/Downtiding fishing. Basic advice and tips to get you going, so you can make the most of your day at sea on Sea Urchin III. Really sorry about the poor sound quality in parts. The wind was a lot stronger than anticipated. Something I need to work on in the future.

Hi skipper could I book a space for one on the 6th of November please time and place for boarding, best regards 👍
Would we be wrecking or up tiding best baits to take best regards.
@@chrisbateman4100 drop me a message on 07855 439380 and we’ll get it sorted. Cheers, Andy
Really useful post Andy. 👍👍
Thanks Mike. Much appreciated 👍
New subscriber to your channel, really enjoy it and learning a lot from you. The only chance I get now for decent fishing is holidays in Devon. I must get over to you sometime and book a trip. Love to see the fish go back. 👍
Thanks very much Jay. I’m glad that you found them to be useful. I’m trying to make a few more, more regularly. Hopefully see you aboard Sea Urchin for a day out in the future. Best Regards Andy
Should the bottom of the standoff loop be at the same level as the loop for the weight, or should it be above? Thanks
I like to have the stand-off loop around 12 inches above the lead. By the time the muppet, hooks and bait are added, the bait will be 6-8 inches off the bottom. I find this helps reduce getting stuck in the wrecks quite as much as a trace which is dragging bottom. Hope that helps. Regards, Andy
Hi ,great video, i just wanted to ask somthing that has confused me, the rod is 14 - 40g but the weights are 3, 4 or 5 oz .I've bought an excel sib and going to try rough ground where I live but the weights plus jig are roughly 120 -150 g how can the rod cope when it states 14 to 40g ? I don't want to break a rod . Thanks
Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad you found it useful. Every rod blank is different; some have faster tapers than others etc. But to answer the question, the 14-40g rating on this Lure rod is the “casting weight” parameters. When fishing from the boat you are just lowering or flicking a short distance with this style of fishing, so there is no compromise. I’ve fished this setup in 50m of water and 6oz is definitely the most I would use. After that the Rod wasn’t as responsive and couldn’t move the lure. Regards, Andy
Thank you for replying, looking forward to more videos,I'm learning a lot from you 👍
Great stuff. Been out on my small sib but might have to get on one of your trips sometime. Is it generally a bit sketchy directly outside the harbour and then settles as you move away, if conditions are good? I turned around and came back in the other day as it was a bit beyond my comfort levels and 6hp outboard, even though generally sea seemed ok up at Sandsend.
Thanks. The water is shallow outside of the harbour on the Rock Top at Whitby, which is where you see the waves breaking sometimes. It depends entirely on which direction the wind and tide are, as well as how much swell there is as to whether Sandsend is ok. Generally a wind which is off land will afford you some shelter at Sandsend. In a small SIB, it wants to be fairly flat. We had the Whitby Lifeboat out to two idiots fishing in a SIB on the five mile ground in thick fog with Northerly winds and swell yesterday. Despite the advice of the RNLI, they thought they were ok and knew better, so stayed out there. As you probably know, sea conditions can change in minutes. Be safe and happy fishing. Regards, Andy
@@whitbywreckandreeffishing Cheers, yeah I'm just figuring it out but hopefully not taking any chances. Appreciate the advice 👍
Great video, I would like to see a close up of your pots you have for controlling your leads. It really grates on me when when I have anglers out smacking leads off the gelcoat. Thanks
Thanks very much. I haven't been down to the boat today to take a picture, but basically the "lead pots" are from B&Q from the plumbing section. I just drill two holes in the bottom (to release water) and then four holes in the side and Cable Tie them to the rail. Hope that helps a bit. Regards, Andy 👍
Now mate im kinda new to all this sea fishing stuff as sold all my carp gear ans taking up sea fishing now i went out last friday with sea otter 2 i think and safe to say wasnt very pleasant experience if im honest.. but ive been watching nearly all your videos now. Wow big shout out to you mate for the in-depth information you give.. ive noticed you use a multi coloured braid i think on one of your videos please can you tell me where you got it from as seems to be alot of fakes about.. would really appreciate it.. and csnt wait to book on with you once all my new stuff arrives 😊
Hi Nathaniel. Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad that you found the videos useful. The braid I use for wrecking is 60lb Spectra. It’s nice and robust. It’s not the thinnest diameter, but you’re not casting with it, so it’s absolutely fine. You can get Daiwa J Braid multi coloured for around £30 or the Spectra multi coloured for much less www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351973664036 Regards Andy
Interesting, thanks. I don't know what depth you are fishing but I would imagine the water is deeper than red or yellow light penetrate (around 10 and 20 metres respectively on a perfect day), I have caught a few pollock recently with a red and white striped lure at about 30m, but I guess the fish only see it as grey and white.
Thanks John. We generally fish in 50-60m off Whitby. I honestly think that people should use the colour they are most confident in, as there doesn’t seem to be any hard and fast rule. When the fish are feeding well, you’ll usually catch on any colour. Regards Andy
@@whitbywreckandreeffishing Yes, at that depth the only colour fish would see is blue. All other colours would appear dark grey, so if it isn't blue the colour doesn't matter.
Thx
Briliant! Couldn't find any vid with all! Information.....thank you so much!..
Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad that you found it useful. Many Thanks, Andy
Do you still run trips
Yes, I run trips all year round. Regards, Andy
Which model reel do you Andy
Hi Andy. I use the Daiwa Saltiga LD 35H for wrecking. 👍
Can you launch a trailer anywhere in Whitby thanks.
Hi John. Yes, there is a slipway for launching in the Harbour, run by North Yorkshire Council. Regards, Andy
Do you change the hook to trebles on the Hoki's
Hi Kevin. No, the hooks stay the same. I prefer the 6/0 Size hooks. The trebles will just cause masses of tangles. 👍
it may have been asked many times! but! what rods, length etc and reel do you use? the real looks like a Shimano Torium but not sure if that real is available in the nothern hemisphere?
Hi Kevin. The rod is a Century Excalibur Braid 20-40lb Class. This rod is no longer available and has been superseded by the Century Eliminator. The reel is a Daiwa 20 Saltiga LD 35. The LD 20 is also perfect for this type of fish and is just slightly smaller in size (with the same drag). Regards Andy
Bloody Hell Andy, I’ve just stumbled upon this on TH-cam and recognised you straight away. A bit of a change from the carp in the Racecourse. Hope you’re all well. Bob
Now then Bob. Great to hear from you. Hope you’re keeping well. 👍👍

Lovely to see you back on video. Great to see some blue sky in the background. How are the water temps doing off Whitby at the moment? Getting a SIB this year to do plenty of close in fishing. Nice to learn from chaps like yourself. Tight lines for the summer.
Thanks for the kind words. Water temps are currently around 13.5 degrees. I’m sure you’ll have a great time on the SIB when you get out. Regards, Andy
Nice one Andy, beautiful evening and nice to see the water has cleared out more inside for the lures. Hopefully see you Saturday 🤞.

Cheers Tony. Hopefully the better stamp fish won’t be too long before they arrive 🤞👍
Nice to see good clean codling over the rough grounds. Great fun on light gear. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much. It’s brilliant fun on light tackle. 👍
Another informative session Andy! Just one question, Ive have just bought a 10-50g lure rod, but I did notice you were using your lighter rod out of the 2, but with a 4oz lead ? I know you were not casting as such, but its a lump compaired to a 30g lure! Regards Andy
Hi Andy. The 10-50g rod is an HTO Lure Game and has a more progressive action than the Saltist rod you see me use. As you said, the rods are rated for casting weight. I’ve found that I can work both rods with leads of up to 6oz no problem at all as there isn’t any casting involved. Just a short flick uptide sometimes if the wind is blowing. Of the two rods, I prefer the Saltist for this type of work and even working a 6oz lead, it doesn’t feel overloaded. 👍
Whats not to enjoy minke whale dolphins fishing absolutely super
You’re right Gary. It’s just fantastic being out there. Catching the fish is a great bonus 👍🎣
Great vid again thanks, what lure clips do you use?
Thanks very much. I like to use the Termalinks from Trident Tackle. I’m not sponsored, but really like the clip and the way it protects the knot. Regards, Andy
Excellent video where you been thought you fell off the earth I watch a million videos and rate your stuff so highly I used to chase the big fish but through ill health have scaled back and this is my way of fishing now nothing more than 100grams now if you get the chance could you do something on the light slow jigging micro jigging tai rubbers etc it’s such a enjoyable way to fish
Thanks very much Kevin. I've really struggled to get out and film anything with the poor weather. We've had the worst winter we can remember for rubbish weather. This year alone I've already had to cancel over 120 days, so when the weather is good, I need to be out earning some wages. When there is a window with the right conditions, I love to go out and film. Hopefully I'll get out a few more times this year. I'm enjoying fishing successively with lighter and lighter tackle. it's just fantastic fun. Once I've honed my skills a bit more, I'll have a go with the Slow Jigging and Micro Jigs. All the best, Andy
Thanks for taking the time to reply Andy things are getting harder for the likes of yourself with the charter business they are like local pubs vanishing every week there has been several from Hartlepool and only 3 remaining from Sunderland where I fish from
@@kevinmccourt651I know what you’re saying Kevin. I’m a positive person and always try and make the trips on Sea Urchin a good experience, irrespective of how much we catch. I think a lot of the “Freezer Fillers” are not coming so often now, which for me is great, because the majority of the anglers who come aboard now, come for a day’s fishing out at sea and catching is viewed as a bonus. If they happen to get a box full, fantastic….but that’s not their primary reason for coming. They enjoy the day for what it is. Those are the anglers that I find are still coming regularly and they’re fantastic company. 👍
Thanks for the video mate i am English and watching from Australia cheers.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Many Thanks, Andy
Great video Andy. Can't wait to get back out with you again. All the best, Steve.
Thanks Steve, much appreciated. Hopefully see you back aboard soon. All the best, Andy

Canny tutorial on shadding Andy
Thank you very much Ray. Glad that you enjoyed it, I love making them. Regards, Andy
Good to see you back on the water and creating some content, have always enjoyed your videos. I like shad fishing along with slow pitch jigging sadly the weather has stopped me getting out much all through June maybe only five times and then we have been plagued with haddock, legal size but no meat on them which has made the cod fishing very poor, hopefully they will have moved off when I am back home in August and the weather gets better. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the kind words Brian. The ground fishing hasn't been great this year so far has it. There are certainly still a lot of small Haddock on the ground. I would like to think that by August some of the better stamp fish will have returned once again. Best regards, Andy 👍
Great entertainment, nice to see both sides of the coin. Thx for taking the time to produce the video.
Thanks for the kind words Barry 👍
Good to see so many juvenile fish. Shows healthy areas. I am no big fish hunter, I just enjoy fishing.
It’s encouraging Ian. Hopefully it continues for years to come 👍
Great video, I could do that all day long I reckon. They all feel big on light gear. Cheers
Thank you for the kind words. Light tackle fishing is fantastic and something that I hope more people will take up. 👍
Superb video Andy, hopefully we will have a go on Sunday.
Thanks very much. Forecast is looking ok at the moment....fingers crossed it holds 👍
Andy i watched all your previous vids but thought you had thrown the towel in , loved this vidio keep them coming you could get a great following on you tube if you keep to the straight talk not BS like some of the others . People want to see straight talk rather than BS honesty always wins ,.
I love making the videos and have loads of different things I want to try. The hard part is finding time to go and film. Weather and Charters always seem to get in the way! 😂 Thanks for taking the time to comment. Best Regards, Andy
Another fantastic video Andy , thank you for the content
Thanks very much Adam. I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Much appreciated. Best Regards, Andy
Do you take people out at all? ;I'm not much for wreck fishing, This looks much more up m street. Im local. Fun watch regardless.
Hi Jamie. I take ten anglers out every day that the weather allows. When I get an opportunity to do a bit of filming it’s usually a day where I’ve had to cancel but there’s a weather window available 👍
About time lol been waiting on some content 👍🏻
I'd love to do it all the time, but with losing so many days to the weather, I have to get out on Charter Days when I can. 👍
@@whitbywreckandreeffishing I appreciate that hard going this year hopefully get a cracking few weeks soon 🤞🏻
