My Amiga 1200 didn't let me down, I did. Replacing capacitors I didn't need to
Why has the sound become weird and crunchy on my A1200? Is it because all A1200's have failing capacitors? Well...
In this video we recap an Amiga 1200, and then find out what was really wrong.

    Intresting video, I found a T2100 in a skip a few years back and it did turn on but I just put it in a draw and forgot about it until today when I tried it today was dead.I took it apart and it started to work again. The battery is dead but works from mains. I do see 6 files when I type dir windows,office ext. The laptop only seems to boot to commandline should it boot straight to windows or do I need to type a command. I'd like to see it working although I have no real use for it.

    I played hours upon hours of this as a kid! It should be running much better with a pentium. If you were running it from windows, that probably sapped a lot of performance.

    Subbed! Great videos. They've been helpful so far for disassembling one I'm trying to fix. I think I may have a similar PSU issue and am trying to find the schematics to identify all the capacitors on the PSU and motherboard (or at least the PSU), can you point me to any resources online - so far I've only found forum discussions but no documents? For example what did you replace out on the PSU? I could start there. Thanks!

      I've added my notes to the video description, the spreadsheet has a tab for PSU and motherboard capacitors, it's mostly complete for the PSU, and has some links to the replacements I chose. Though I don't know if those links will still work. However I think there may be more than one revision of the PSU so be careful, I just read all the values off the capacitors!

    These caps don't see much wear or high temperatures unless there's a 040 or higher accelerator and mechanical hdd in it. Still can't hurt if you don't damage pcb and bridge pins etc. My first thought was to check voltages with an oscilloscope. That would've pointed you towards psu issues. I suspected the opamp. Also consider getting low melt solder, it makes it much easier to get stuff out with large pin counts without damaging the pcb. All in all you did a good job!

    • @mattsqwrl
      @mattsqwrl หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh can you use low melt solder to help melt the existing solder to remove things?

  • @bazzaar1869
    @bazzaar1869 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yeah, sadly changing capacitors has become an internet meme. Everybody is doing because everybody else is doing it and not because it needs to be done. It is partly understandable as there was a short period, the late 1990s to early 2000s, when capacitors were being made sub-par and bad cap syndrome was a thing. Your Amigas, and many of the early home computers, are from a period before this time and clearly have decent quality caps. I see too many TH-cam videos of people with very poor soldering skills replacing perfectly good capacitors with ones of dubious quality to end up with a computer of worse reliability than when it started. Capacitors do fail, dont misunderstand me, but this blanket change mentality is bad.

    • @mattsqwrl
      @mattsqwrl หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's tough to know where the truth lies. I did have some sympathy for the idea that these marked the change from through hole to surface mount, and that might mean they were new and risky at the time.

    I recapped my “spare” A1200 the other month. All went well except a THT lost a pad. Very annoying but I rescued it. Didn’t fix the underlying poor video though. And then I broke the clip holding the space bar’s bar on. Very annoyinng! I used two layers of aluminium tape and hot air to remove the SMTs near the keyboard connector; much easier IMO. For my “baby” (purchased in 1992 when I was about to start uni) I didn’t chance it and limited my surgery to fixing the non existent sound output. Turned out to be the quad opamp IC. Swapped it over and she sounds just like she did when new. Retrobrighted her too. Just went very very easy on the plucking the keys off this time. It’s great having her look great. I even found one of my newish Dell monitors does PAL and multisync, which is absolutely fantastic for workbench and games via WHDLoad. Hope you are keeping well!!!

    Well, it seems like stretched drive belts on these Toshiba drives is a common issue. I have my Satellite T2110 in parts on my workbench (your previous video was very helpful here. Thanks) and I have the drive out. The belt is very loose just like yours. Can you perhaps tell me what size belt you used so I don't necessarily have to order all of them? Also, where did you order them from?...finally, did you consider trimming the belt down so it wasn't so wide? Cheers

    • @mattsqwrl
      @mattsqwrl หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am not sure where I ordered from, but I just searched 'tape belt' on Amazon and there are plenty of options. I wasn't sure how to measure it well since it was stretched, so that's why I bought a variety. The reason mine had fitment problems is that the belt was 'square', so it's not that it's too wide, it's too deep / thick. I see some of the variety packs have both square and flat belts, I bet flat is what's needed. Maybe I should try again! Good luck.

      @mattsqwrl หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do you mean the screen works when you power on, but not later? Or not at all? It would be hard to troubleshoot, though the first step would be to check if the power supply to the screen is good. It's high voltage, so if you haven't used a multimeter before this probably isn't a good one to start with.

      @@KazukiMatsuoka It's very tricky to troubleshoot this old stuff. It does have an external monitor connector, but you'd need some weird old monitor to use it. by '95, the only place people were still willing to tolerate a mono screen was on a Pocket PC. The question for a notebook was Dual Scan or TFT? I have a couple of Toshibas from the Pentium era and they both have TFT screens. For those who don't know, all modern displays use TFT (Thin Film Transistor) technology, whether they are VA, TN or IPS. Some major nostalgia here; I lived in the UK at the time. These days, a basic laptop might be desirable for a writer. Could use the floppy to transfer files to a modern PC via USB, although most of the external floppy drives are so old, they won't work with Windows 10 or up. Linux might support them. A better choice would be pretty much any slightly newer laptop with a USB port. There are modern Linux distros that are made to work on 20+ year old machines. I think an e-ink display would look and perform better, lol.

      I haven't come across one, it's a shame they don't support more lenses!

      I just posted a video with the 'partial' repair. None of the writing on the drive seems to identify it though!
