Why Quake Champions Failed
มุมมอง 6K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Quake Champions is a notable title in the Quake series as its latest and most controversial title. It didn't succeed by modern gaming standards and still competes with older titles for player counts. Champions made several notable gameplay additions and removals that likely contributed to the games downfall including the admission of an important character in the Quake series. This should be Quake 6
มุมมอง 12K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Rumor of the potential announcement of Quake 6 has been spreading around so in today's video I want to discuss what Quake 6 could potentially look like. Quake 6 should be similar to previous Quake titles while being more expansive and getting rid of some of the more archaic parts of old Quake. Although I personally do not think there will be a Quake 6, if there was it would have the potential t...

Why did Quake (and arena shooters) die?
มุมมอง 436Kปีที่แล้ว
The arena fps genre laid the ground work for shooters as a whole and created some of the best gaming experiences ever to be created. Despite this, arena fps games have taken a back seat to their younger brother, tactical shooters. Why has this happened? In this video I take a look at a couple games from the arena fps genre and their design choices that may have led to this downfall. Sorry this ...
Is the SRS good? (ULTRAKILL cybergrind)
มุมมอง 61Kปีที่แล้ว
Today I explore the new SRS Cannon and how good it will be in ULTRAKILL Cybergrind. This new weapon is interesting. If it receives any changes, it could become a staple weapon. ULTRAKILL really doesn't need that though lol. How 2 Open Fortress
มุมมอง 4.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Been playing lots of Open Fortress lately. Plays really well from the bunny hopping to the gunplay. Best tf2 mod out there without a doubt. Twitch: www.twitch.tv/skeleblood Discord: discord.gg/nkjN3fMc3T Instagram: skeleblood TikTok: www.tiktok.com/@skeleblood #savetf2 #openfortress #tf2
These games didn’t die, they just stopped making them so I couldn’t play them anymore 😢
no in game monetization!!!
I have another suggestion for a really fun Arena Shooter that is really only getting better with each update. It's called Open Fortress, a mod of Team Fortress 2 that has the usual movement tech and complexity of Quake along with similar weapons of Quake, but much better balance, allowing for the weaker guns in Quake to shine greatly in Open Fortress. I highly suggest giving this game a try with a couple of friends. It's currently still in Alpha and has a lot of potential.
Cos they are boring Move on
It was a computer game. All PC gamers ended up playing MMO's.
Tried to kill them. UT3 was delisted. why?
high movement speed undermines tactical strategy. its impossible to coordinate with teammates when things are flying around at mach1. i believe slower more tactical shooters prevailed because team strategy is more fun than high speed dueling
DONK! x2 OOOOOHOHOHOAHOHAHAHAHAAAAHHHHH...LYUHAHEAAAHE
Back in the days i loved unreal tournament..pretty cool arena fpa..for that time😅❤
0:35 You sound like Unreal Tournament didn't exist, shame on you. "Arena" this and "Arena" that. Yeah I know QUAKE 3 ARENA... what about Unreal Tournament! What a low video.
Enter straftat
21:52 That's literally you at 1:00
They died because they're skill based and younger gamers are unskilled and don't want to apply themselves. There. I just saved you 26 minutes.
- highlights CS as a "slower paced, tactical shooter" - shows armsrace or deathmatch footage ... -??
This is SUCH a good video, even for an indie dev like myself. Gyro and flick stick support is so interesting, I personally love Quake and being able to possibly address these issues for future projects will be even more interesting with points and ideas like these. Keep up the great work 🔥🔥
I didn't watch the video ( and I won't) but the reason is these games offer NOTHING fun to do beyond 4-5 hours of gameplay...UNLESS...You are one of those people who are in love with spending 300 hours learning how to go faster, want to know how many people are like this? Here are the biggest communities I know: 1) Smash melee, 90% on the spectrum and you require 58 inputs a second to simply walk forward, game is like 20 years old and the biggest prize pool was probably $1000USD and a shoe string. 2) RTS players, 90% on the spectrum and a long dead competitive genre except for people who look like ulilia or 40 year olds who used to play starcraft on the living room pc as a kid 3) Fighting game players, 90% on the spectrum and they spend litearlly hundreds and hundreds of hours in the training modes without ever even playing online 4) Speedrunners, 100% on the spectrum and 100% of them only do it because they are depressed and use it as a form of escapism instead of fun With that being said, I don't recall any boomer shooters trying to appeal to middle/highschool kids who will grow up with the game and keep it going for generations to come (riot games is very good with this), they always try to appeal to the 45 year olds who used to play these games with brown poop color scheme and these people don't even have more than 1-2 hours during the weekend to even play the games to begin with because they have to spend all day changing their diaper and taking their alzheimer's medication.
Yup did not work :(
0:42 You realize that fighting games are growing for quite some time now. Not to their 90s glory days, that's just not possible anymore but their here again. And since fighting games are a genre I assume you're refering to 2D fighting games, those are back big time and it's great. Still missing arena shooters, especially something akin to Quake III Arena, that's why I clicked on the video.
Soundsmith real
Can you link the mod manager? I can't find it for the life of me
I used to love playing instagib CTF in unreal tournament 2004 as they had server browser and custom game modes.
cool dude i like
Overwatch
Ut99 still has a playerbase
These games died because the market got saturated and getting good wasn’t enough for modern gamers. Players needed ranks, levels, and unlocks to show progress.
It died because there no lan parties anymore. Group of friends had a lan party recently. Haven't had one in over a decade. Guess what we played... Quake
Quake 2 on heat net. While reading the strat guide with tips from 'thresh'. Anyone else?
Quale IS tue best fps
8:01 i am big in favor for the tracking rocket launcher. xonotic is a quake3-based game that uses a mechanic like that for its rocket launcher and if you watch a xonotic frag montage you can see the crazy amounts of depth it adds 20:09 maybe it should split the effect of powerups, armor, etc. like, if two people grab an armor, they each only get 1/2 of that armor. it discourages stealing while also avoiding extreme cases of snowballing from highly coordinated teams since, in effect, that power up adds no more health and armor to the team's total health pool than it would have normally with the added bonus of dampening the saltiness in cases in which two players scramble to a health pickup
Guy tripping over himself to put down COD players cause they're having fun and don't pain over why they're game is more smerterer than others 😂 And I don't even play COD Maybe the nerds are why arena shooters are dead
I don’t think a high skill ceiling is inherently off putting - Counter Strike is alive and well. I think the real turnoff with Quake is that it’s all about individual mechanic performance, whereas in CS you can beat mechanically superior opponents with better teamplay.
Q6 should be an engine first. The game is something else entirely. Q3 was extremely moddable. That's why it worked so well. I spent years on Q3 RA3 (Rocket Arena) and InstaGib CTF for that reason. In this video you made wishes that had nothing to do with the base game to make. Those wishes could just be a part of an embedded mod after the engine is done. I hated Quake Champions after 10 minutes of playing. This game was doomed from the start. I have no affinity to play a game i need to wait for 10 minutes in a lobby to play for a 4 minutes match (i'm not exagerrating so much). So better get Q6 instaplay features like Q3. Joining an already started game is mandatory. Not negociable.
I remeber putting empty map on Q3A and training jumps for hours.
Darkstalkers cameo
08:00 - For me, an incidentally interesting approach that comes to mind, is the Quake 3 mod Generations Arena. Where, depending of what idSoftware game archetype you're playing as, you're using a set of weapons based on that character's title setting. So what's interesting in this concept? Welp, as the mod reveals each weapon roster set has their own quirks, strengths, and weaknesses. Quake 1 weapons have the better average firerate, but their shotguns are comparatively weaker against other series' shotguns, and their automatic weapons are projectile based(needing to target lead), Wolfenstein 3D weapons have the advantage of alot of them being a hitscan weapon, but comes with the disadvantage of having lesser performing lower-tier weapons, putting weapon hunting a top priority. Classic Doom has higher power SSG and RL, but SSG has the worse firerate of all shotgun archetypes, and Doom RL has the slowest rocket flight speed. Quake II has most damaging "sniper" weapon(QII railgun is BEEF), Quake 3 plasmagun is the best performing projectile weapon(compare to the similar weapon types on other games), etc...so you get the idea. The player gets to have choices on their preferred weapon sets, but they cannot game the loadout meta by simply opting to get the most synergistic and the best performing weapons. Instead, they have to decide and consider which weapon set they would run with, perks, warts and all.
yeah you get more variety & reasonably achieve balance like this, also "what you see is what you fight" is way more appealing to the normal person compared to a "heh you better spend time figuring out how this particular guy in the lobby is built" thing with random param changes
Unreal Tournament 3 killed the genre, ironically Unreal Tournament 2004 was arguably the best.
An additional point about why they died out is that back when they were popular most games had community servers vs matchmaking with literally everyone playing the game. This meant that if you wanted to play a more casual lower skilled match you could find like minded people & join those servers. Servers could have unique modifiers like in Unreal Tournament, or even just allow community admins to curate a specific type of player essentially creating hundreds if not thousands of variances in exactly how players experience that game & it's maps.
I think a lot of people forget that Halo is an arena shooter.
Where is unreal tournament series
CS and then Battlefield 2. Around when BF2 dropped I don't think anyone still played Q3.
hi, so i did everything step by step but uhh mod gui didnt appear what should i do
a live service quake in 2024 is DOA, the time for a new FPS live service to break in was 5 years ago, now the giants are so entrenched you're never going to get a foothold but on top of that fuck live services.
As much as I love AFPS games, I feel like the community is super disingenuous regarding why the genre is niche. Just wanted to cover a couple points you made that I disagree with: 1. Arena first-person shooters mechanically do not provide any more difficulty than some of the modern options we have in competitive gaming. The "difficulty" is rooted in how small the competitive community is where new players are required to deal with the best of the community because that is just how we need to fill games nowadays. It takes time to get good enough to be competitive and most players logically conclude that building themselves up in such a dead-end community is simply not worth the time. Thus, the 10-15+ year veteran remains on top because there's nobody who cares enough to replace them. The people who tend to say that quake or other AFPS games are too challenging for them also are not very good in other FPS genres. 2. Every competitive FPS game is "aim centric". It's not any more difficult to hit a rail in quake compared to landing a headshot in counter-strike or overwatch. In fact, you should listen to rapha's discussion about his time in professional overwatch when he played briefly. Essentially, quake players who tried struggled on carry roles (DPS) and the counter-strike / TF2 players were just mechanically better in those roles. I'm not saying all AFPS players would be worse than other FPS players if they tried, I'm just saying AFPS players are not in a different realm aim wise. 3. Weapon imbalance is not that bad in AFPS (In your case, Quake). Both the grenade launcher and plasma do a much better job at area control than the rockets in quite a few cases. The shotgun is also incredibly important to have for quick close-range damage. The machine gun replaces the LG's job when you are out of a certain range so it's also important. Found this to be a weird point considering you seem to play quake.
Oh god yass gamriel jack my overly pumped up hammer AGH
weird move to put the tutorial at the end but okay
SCP-173 just using Goku's instant transmission bro
Does Quake Live have graphics? I wasn't able to find it the first time I played it. Everything looked like Green Keel which ruined the game for me. Is there any point in playing it if I like Quake 3: Arena? I would love to play Quake 3 game with my own player model. I would make Harrison and Milk models to play as. I wonder if there exist a Quake game where I can make my own skins without making my own servers. That would be cool. Can I play Quake 3 in VR chat? That is the game that has custom player models.
I sometimes wish fighting games were more popular but then I remember theyre at least doing better than RTS and arena shooters
They’re not going back in time for “free to play game” with private sever or server browser or map editor or mods. They want full control and pushing micro transactions to make money. And there is no Q6 or any new quake when the current quake can barely survive
i want my quake BONELESS
