Why Quake Champions Failed
มุมมอง 7K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Quake Champions is a notable title in the Quake series as its latest and most controversial title. It didn't succeed by modern gaming standards and still competes with older titles for player counts. Champions made several notable gameplay additions and removals that likely contributed to the games downfall including the admission of an important character in the Quake series. This should be Quake 6
มุมมอง 13K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Rumor of the potential announcement of Quake 6 has been spreading around so in today's video I want to discuss what Quake 6 could potentially look like. Quake 6 should be similar to previous Quake titles while being more expansive and getting rid of some of the more archaic parts of old Quake. Although I personally do not think there will be a Quake 6, if there was it would have the potential t...

Why did Quake (and arena shooters) die?
มุมมอง 456Kปีที่แล้ว
The arena fps genre laid the ground work for shooters as a whole and created some of the best gaming experiences ever to be created. Despite this, arena fps games have taken a back seat to their younger brother, tactical shooters. Why has this happened? In this video I take a look at a couple games from the arena fps genre and their design choices that may have led to this downfall. Sorry this ...
Is the SRS good? (ULTRAKILL cybergrind)

Today I explore the new SRS Cannon and how good it will be in ULTRAKILL Cybergrind. This new weapon is interesting. If it receives any changes, it could become a staple weapon. ULTRAKILL really doesn't need that though lol. Q3A is a gem from the past. Very innovative. The fact that today's most popular shooters do nothing with any of those innovative ideas is sad to hear.
Always was fascinated by early organized quake and unreal, never understood how deep the mechanics where till your excellent video. Keep up the goodwork you should have way more subscribers.
Lack of Multiplayer support and lack of remasteres. Age of Empires 2 was dead too, but when they remade it and made matchmaking easy, the game is alive now
The ferrymen didn’t appreciate your comments, I see
Maybe it's because so many clout seeking youtubers make dumb statements like "arena shooters are dead" even though the first three quake games, the first two unreal tournament, and even the first two doom games regularly have active servers and so anyone who might actually be interested in playing arena shooters are put off instead of just giving it a try. Maybe that's why? Maybe those youtubers we're talking about should make videos like "why you should play quake/unreal/doom/whatever" instead of making videos that might as well say "avoid these games because they're dead". But then maybe that wouldn't get the views since it's not a dramatic overblown statement, and we couldn't possibly have that could we?
Real answer: "They're boring."
Please explain how you made a 26 min video on arena shooters and didn't mention Unreal Tournament?
one thing to note, you don't need to whiplash the cannon ball to parry it, you can launch it in the enemy while next to it and wait just a little bit to parry it so it does the full damage, so the problems with the whiplash can be solved that way
To think that i played quake 3 since i was 5 years old and i actually won a local tournament on a cybercafe in my town when i was 7, gosh i feel so old. Im tired of all this battle royale and tactical shooter crap, we need more arena shooters today 😔
It died because its too hard for the masses.
windows protected my pc
I think you focus too much on the high end game. Most players are not high end. Quake I (or you could argue Doom did) basically started it all. It had Singleplayer and Multiplayer, you played single player alone and multiplayer with friends on a LAN. Internet wasnt that big of a thing for gaming back than. It was costly slow and laggy as hell. Quake was a blast to play with friends, while drinking a couble beers. Skill difference wasnt that big of a thing, your frinds likely were on a similar level. Then Quake II came, and it focused on single player, multiplayer wasnt that good. Then there was half live and unreal, we mostly played that at LAN parties. All was still good. The came unreal tournament, quake III arena...for some reason without Singleplayer. So the choice was playing against bots (booooring) or on the Internet, that caught on. Or still LAN. But because Internet the LAN parties got fewer and fewer. Now, on the internet you didnt play with friends anymore. But against competitive, often toxic people of wildly varying skill level. And griefers and cheaters on top. Unless you had tons of time to get to the very top, a frustrating and unfun experience. So many, including myself just stopped playing these games. Gist: The internet and bad design choices killed classic deathmatch + boomer shooters.
Bro i can't believe you didn't mention Unreal Tournament even once..
Monkey Dung!
Unreal not mentioned. Not watching
Always some controller user that can play any game well
People don't wanna earn kills, they wanna press q and kill you because their meter filled
there never was anything that could compete with threewave ctf quake 3 arena mod gameplay. i played it really hard
Cya bro have fun
4:58 look at this baby ass rocket jumping around the sonic map. 😂😂😂
Congrats, you are able to talk into the computer
What does "the fighting games of the FPS genre" even mean? What are other types of FPS games in this analogy? If arena shooters are the fighting games of the FPS genre, then fighting games are the arena shooters of...?
But how does one install custom levels, like ultrabus?
Doom 2016 shows that people eager to play some really brutal shooters with great graphics and atmosphere. It actually was the most popular game of the year. But instead we're getting all these parodies like Overwatch or Diabotical... In the end it all boils down to emotions you experience in a game and we all know sex and violence sell pretty good. Quake 3 was perfect in many aspects, except probably the spawn system, but it got reworked in Quake Live. It was the Mortal Kombat of shooters, it felt like it. Mortal Kombat 9 showed pretty clearly that if you update the graphics on a well balanced classic game and add new content it becomes a hit again pretty quickly. Unlike Netherrealm Studios, Quake devs failed to understand this concept. So, we have what we have. But, the main problem of any game these days is not even the genre, it's the amount of games coming out yearly. Even if your game is absolutely amazing, people will not play it for years as it was with Quake. Another game will draw the attention of the audience next week, then another next month and so on. People just don't feel the need to be loyal to a single game and improve their skills, gamers nowadays are probably addicted to the sense of novelty more than to something specific they can only experience in a particular game. Back in the days we didn't even have so many options to choose from, not to mention the aggressive advertising that didn't exist in the past. Anyways, hope you guys get the point. It's not that shooters are not interesting anymore, it's 1) Devs that don't understand, what people want from a shooter. They fail to create the atmosphere of a deadly competition. 2) Variety of games on the market that makes life of an average game much shorter.
Servers are full with played even this days. I'm playing Quake arena from time to time the game is not dead.
i watched your video and managed to go from 38 to 52 on violent 2 weeks after the fact and i didnt even play the cybergrind a single time between those 2 weeks. 10/10 that schmoovement was amazing
overwatch counts as an AFPS? Thank you for saying that, so i dont have to watch the rest of the video. You are unqualified to talk about AFPS.
oh wait this was before the red weapons mb
this guy does not know conduction at all lmaoo
The bunny hopping is very similarly exploited in Delta Force 2...and Battlezone '98, where u have MUCH larger environments where u can traverse them very quickly with bunny hopping, tho not nearly as quickly as quake due in part to how large the levels are comparatively
Diabotical was released on epic game store that's why it died.
There are a lot of reasons for the decline of quake (like) shooters. And most of it comes to the change in the audience and environment. Probably the thing that separates gaming from now to the past is HOW much you can easily play it (and for free or low cost). Which means, people will sink in hours at a time in a game. The thing with quake is that it basically ALWAYS needs your full focus and attention. Unless you’re playing with friends and having fun. The issue becomes that most people will quickly be mentally tired to keep playing. It’s not that they’re not having fun, but they just can’t keep on playing. Which is why competitive team shooters like CS, Val etc. have become so popular (amongst other factors). There’s downtime with rounds, and there’s always a ‘calm’ period before the fire fight, or can occur after. It’s also why battle royals became insanely popular. While yes, walking around, looking for loot is boring and not great if you have a short time to play. If you’re sinking hours, it’s actually perfect. And we can actually see what happened to Quake potentially happen to traditional cod multiplayer. There’s a lot of issues with modern cod. And a few of these have led to modern multiplayer to being a sweat fest, where people now choose not to play because they can’t just play casually and for fun like they used to. But cod has so many other reasons that people stay for that it’s unlikely to lose sales.

It's a "OK" video, but something to think about. Arena games are not more from Big Companies, most of the "sucessfull Free to Play Games" are backed by big companies. And other point is they spend more money Half or more of a total budget in Advertise than Developing. Other point like Escape from Tarkov been extremely niche more punitive and with a very long and tedious learning curve but is much more talked about than arena fps of the past. Marketing and advertise make these games stuffed down our throats than difficulties and learning curves.
Straight facts in this video! Don't hate me for this, but Duke Nukem 3D was the first FPS game I remember that allowed our friends in college that got stomped playing Q1 and Q2 to have a good time and still get kills by setting traps using things like the laser trip mines and pipe bombs combined with the security cameras. I think Duke 3D and UT/UT2k4 deserved a shout out. I started playing Doom 2 back in the early to mid 90's with a keyboard (no mouse). After playing on Dwango and then trading phone numbers with another player, so we didn't go broke paying for time on Dwango, I got stomped 200 to 20 after playing for about 45 minutes or so. This was the moment I learned other people played FPS's with a mouse and spent the rest of the summer practicing with a mouse before going back to college in the Fall semester and then stomping all my friends that were still using just the keyboard or game controller. After the 3rd match where my other friends realized this wasn't a fluke, they all started playing with the mouse as well. Ahhh the good ole days. :D
Good, don't come back.
My preferred arena shooter has to be classic Doom with either the new Kex engine remaster from 2024, or using source ports like Zandronum, ZDaemon or Odamex. Even though you can get absolutely stomped if someone hogs the BFG, it's so hectic and the Super Shotgun in that game is so powerful that I believe it's the great equalizer. Hell, some servers still use the OG Dwango mapsets from the 90s, and IMO they have aged great!
The bait titles: Plays in a game full of players. Why arena games are dying? 🤦♂️
I honestly don't think adding new movement mechanics is the right move, sure it'll add depth but I don't think lack of depth is the reason why quake isn't more popular. We need new modes, new spectacle, and systems in place to make the onboarding process less frustrating for new players. I think that means new more casual modes in addition to optional simpler movement systems (eg. "doom mode" in adition to traditional quake movement) would help players get their bearings. Quake can't just double down on mechanics that are actively pushing away players. I'm not saying remove the basic quake movement completely but I think experimenting with things like round based modifiers, replayable singleplayer modes, and some sort of party game mode that's a bit sillier and more casual might help.
Damn bro. We will miss you but do your religious duty. We'll be here when you get back.
25:22 it was a fantastic video. I liked it very much.
Liked and Subscribed. 👍
17:11 what anime?
8:58 as cool as quick to was I much prefer the theme and Ambience and atmosphere of Quake 1. I need to remake one and pronto. In fact I'll take a relaunching of the whole series, like a reboot of the series.
Quake 5 not Quake 6 becouse champions is not 5
I liked Quake single player, but never enjoyed its multiplayer. CS was built by players for players and finessed by them for some time. Quake was created by a studio with their vision of what players might want CS also has random spawn maps, and aim-centered mini-games for honing reaction I just never liked the style Quake want with the III: the extreme colors, bulky design, it just seemed weird. The 1-st was mystical and about the ancient past, the 2-nd was military. I comprehend they went with space theme in the 3-rd, but it just looked like a step in the opposite direction from realism Quake was about, and all really craved for at that time of CG It's not that CS really improved over time, it's the same at its core as it was 20 years ago. But just keeping it up and improving graphically worked for players, as they were not forgotten, and the core mechanics stayed the same
What if quake had skill based match making
Quake 3 was prety frekin good. But all those games were very short attention span games. You could call quake more an arcade, than fps. Its an aim trainer basicaly! Unreal tournament was a bit more nuanced. I still think first Unreal tournament is very playable today. Quake 3 is still very good today!! The Unreal new one that they remade is complete garbage! Same as new Quake! They just dont understand what makes a good game anymore for some reason... And make everything worse...more nuanced graphics is realy not needed in these games, its not the point! And that is what all todays companies do. Focus 99 percent of attention and crew on graphics, and leave making gameplay to the janitor!!!
died? isn't it arising?
