Left Hand Square thread screw - Metal Lathe
Left Hand Square thread screw - Metal Lathe square thread screw are primarily used in applications where high power transmission efficiency and high-load capacity are necessary. It gets its name from the square cross-section of the thread. They are the most efficient thread form owing to thread flanks that are perpendicular to the thread axis. As a result, radial forces on the mating nuts are e...

    Thanks alot for this 👍. I am a hobby machinist and was able to dissassemble it since I didn't know how. I clean all parts using a sonic cleaner and it made a pretty good job. Afterwards some air pressure and a bit of scrubs + paper towel here and there. For the reassembly, the only thing I added was oil used for slides on pretty much all surfaces.

    does it matter if i'll make mine with only 2 bearings? one normal and one conical. Do you think it will have side play or something? I have made the shaft only long enough for 2 bearings. Should i just use 2 normal bearings or should i include a conical one as well ?

    • @howtousemetallathemachines6478

      Use one normal bearings and Roller Bearing , It is suitable for light workpiece. Live Center Applications heavy duty bull nose live centers are typically used in applications where the center hole is a large bore or when the application calls for the machining of pipe or other cylindrical components such as hydraulic cylinders. Oil field maintenance facilities, manufacturers of power generation components, and pipe manufacturers all rely on the durability of heavy duty bull nose live centers. These centers are specifically designed to operate in hostile environments where work piece weights and machining forces are extreme. Bull nose live centers are constructed with larger bearings to carry these heavy loads. The strength and alignment of the fully supported bull nose head provides longer center life when machining large work pieces. The rigidity of this live center helps dampen vibration and resist chatter.

    5:55 did you make 70 degrees steep angle because the steel part was kind of short for a 60 degrees angle or was it just your personal choice? I'm asking because i have a similar stock of about 80mm diameter and about long as yours and i would have preferred 60 degree angle but i think it's too short for that

    • @howtousemetallathemachines6478

      The 70 degree center angle is commonly used for larger parts. We see it most often in steel mill rolls and similar heavy shafts. In the US the 60 degree angle is the most common while 70 degree is industry specific. You also see a few 90 degree centers. In Europe you see 60 degree and some 75 degree centers.

    • @razvanon

      i've already made mine 70 degrees like yours with one normal bearing and one conical. works fine but the only issue is i forgot to machine a little bit of clearence on the inside nose and i think the first bearing rubs a bit on the steel inside as it spins but i could see it already improved on that. Not sure how i'll take it out on the future because i already knocked out the shaft because i forgot to put grease on the conical bearing and the first normal bearing remained in place. Any idea how to take the first bearing out ?@@howtousemetallathemachines6478

    • @howtousemetallathemachines6478

      @@razvanon You have to drilling the live center. so that you can take out the bearings with a steel rod. Please observe safety precautions when drilling.

      I partly agree…I’ve never used grease on drill or lathe chucks as it just acts like a magnet for dirt and chips, and there are no fast moving parts…I just use a light oil like3 in 1…to prevent rust and help everything run smoothly

    • @QuebecoisSti

      During reassembly, on my side, I've use oil for slides on all surfaces, much smoother and should keep rust away a bit.
