Thanks bro
Thanks
Took me bout 15 minutes.....thanks. the hardest part was reaching up trying to find that hole lol but not the worst
Do you need to disconnect the battery? Or no since we aren't touching anything electrical?
I generally don't disconnect the battery when changing spark plugs.
@@brentworksgarage thanks! I hadn't before but wasn't sure if it was bad
I read in another forum to hook up a battery maintainer before removing the old battery due to some concern having the infotainment system/key fob lock up, and others saying it’s unnecessary. Is this a valid concern or should I be able to switch them out without one?
Can't say I've ever run into that issue. Replaced alot of batteries over time and never once had issues with infotainment or key fob lock up or not working afterwards. Only have to reset clock and radio pre-sets. 😉
I read in another forum to hook up a battery maintainer before removing the old battery due to some concern having the infotainment system/key fob lock up, and others saying it’s unnecessary. Is this a valid concern?
I can't say I've heard of that before. That would be a pain if your battery died on the road, and needed to be replaced.
Hi, I have a question, do I need to initialize the i-stop after installing a new battery?
I think you do if your vehicle has i-stop. This CX-3 does not have i-stop, so I did not have to initialize anything. There should be videos out there showing the process.
How much total would say you spend on tools and supplies
Already had a ratchet, but the spark plug socket was about $15, and the spark plugs themselves were $50 at the time. So around $65. Canadian $$$.
Just got mine done by garage. Had to do it again myself n apply anti seize. A hole mechanics
Pregunta, para cambiar las balatas de un modelo 2017, son el mismo tipo y tamaño las balatas delantersas que las traseras??
No. Different part numbers between the front and rears. Also different part numbers based on where the Mazda 3 was assembled. :(
This is even more difficult on my 2021 mazda 3 hatchback. I managed to replace it from the engine bay on the passenger side but the drivers side is genuinely impossible. I’m not comfortable removing the fender so I will need to do it from the bay. Not difficult. Just need to unscrew a few bolts. Pay in the butt though.
Thanks for showing the hardware installation details
Bless you! provided torque ratings!
Are the bottom clips optional on the break pads
Not sure what exactly you are referring to. The brake pad guide plates/clips (that the ears of the brake pad itself sit in) are required. The squealer usually goes on the inner pad, usually required as well. The brake shims are on the back of the pads should also be used.
Thanks for this video! A plastic cup to use while removing the old filter is a great tip. Question: shouldn't I leave the car up (on ramps/jack) and keep the panel off until after filling the new oil, and run the car a few minutes, in order to verify its not leaking before closing up the panel?
Not a bad idea to do that. Just ensure you have added the correct amount of oil (check oil level when the car is on level ground). Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video. It saved me today!
Glad to hear. Thanks for watching.
You should post more helpful vids, honestly it was like watching cris fix😂 I’d love to see this channel grow man, keep it up 💪
Wow! Thanks for the super compliment. Really appreciate that. Will be posting in the future. All the best.

Clean everything with soapy war ter and scrubbing brush, would be good 🎉!!
Thanks so much for this. I’ll be using this video next weekend to do this job. I can’t believe how much money you can save by doing your own maintenance.
That's is so stupid. I had a Toyota Corrola n can replace the buld from the inside the engine easily
I agree. Should be easily accessible from the engine bay. Thanks for watching.
@@brentworksgarage It looks like the driver's one can be replaced by removing the air filter box. One screw and one nut to remove. I haven't tried it....
@@grendels_arm I think there are still obstacles in the way. The owner's manual states (page 6-49) to do it the way shown in the video. Thanks for watching.
I just replaced mine and tried to go through the top after getting the airbox filter out of the way for sport. You can get to the low beam light- successfully replaced that one previously through the top with some somewhat painful squishing of your hand, but the side marker light's just to far in there. Gotta go through the wheel well for this one!
@@keithdaedalius7627 Thanks for verifying, and watching. 😉
No need for dielectric grease? And if so, where?
It is optional. If you do want to use it, put a small amount on the inside of the spark plug boot. Use something like a Q-Tip to apply.
Hi, I tried doing this job whiteout looking at a video, but my caliper doesn't want to retract. Would you or anyone know what to do ?
Check out 4:38 of the video. You'll want to Turn the piston back in, DO NOT push it back. The rears must be turned back in. Make sure your parking brake is off prior. Could try opening the brake bleeder then turn the piston back into the caliper. Note that you may need to bleed the brakes after this. Also make sure the indents/grooves on the brake piston are at the 12 and 6 o'clock position. Image at 4:38. Good luck.
@@brentworksgarage wo.. I'm pretty sure every other videos about changing rotor and/or callipers on mazda 3 2017-2018 insists on NOT turning the piston.. It must be push in
@@patricegamache2114 That would be for the cars equipped with the Electronic Parking Brake. You are correct for those EPB calipers, they need to be pushed back. They also need to be placed in maintenance mode prior to pushing the piston back. The mechanical park brake (hand brake) models need to be turned. Thanks for your comment... I wasn't aware this generation had the Electronic Park Brake. -The EPB appears to have been added as an option in the 2017 model year.
Great absolutly great help.
Excellent. Glad to hear.
just wanted to say thanks for the needle nose pliers tip. had to pull the spark plug socket off 4 times cause they were fit on so snug.
How tight did you tighten the plugs.
Service manual states 12-14 ft-lbs (15-20 Nm).
@@brentworksgarage I wouldn't go past 15 NM buddy.
@@taichihead42 Agreed. I'd stay on the lower side of those specs.
Thank you! very helpful.
I unhook the battery and attach it to my balls before I touch the plugs.
What are the specs of the battery
Certified brand available at Canadian Tire. Part number 10-3503-2. CCA 525, CA: 645 Group size is 35. Hope this helps!
Nice video! After closing the brake fluid cap again, do you have to pump the brake pedal with it off a few times until it’s firm? And unrelated to that: do you ever lubricate the brake piston with anything? I’ve heard of folks doing it but I don’t know what they’d use for that or if it’s even a good idea. I love that you went through the whole process including which silicone lube to use. This is seriously one of the best videos!
I wouldn't say you have to pump the brakes after putting the cap back on the reservoir, but it isn't a bad idea to pump them a few times. I've checked my fluid in the past (cap removed and reinstalled) and haven't pumped the brakes, and didn't have any issues. I've never lubed the brake piston itself. That would mean you'd have to remove the boot or somehow get the lubricant past the boot. I'd worry about ripping the boot. If I'm understanding your question properly that is. Putting some lubricant on the face of the piston (where it touches the back of the brake pad) can be done to reduce noises. Thank you for the kind words. Much appreciated.
After I replaced the rear brake pads on my Mazda 3, the handbrake does not work, did I do something wrong? :(
Was it for sure working prior to replacing the pads? There was a recall (#1217F) for the park brake. I am in a similar situation where my pass. side doesn't work. Will have a video showing how to replace caliper in the future (hopefully). You didn't disconnect the park brake cable from the caliper while replacing the pads did you? What was your method of getting the piston back into the caliper? Rear calipers need to be turned back into the caliper (if electronic park brake then pushing in only, no turning). Both sides are not working with park brake?
@@brentworksgarage Thanks for the reply, it was working fine before the change, park brake cable is still working, I put the piston back in the caliper by pressing it (it isn't electronic), I didn't understand what should be turned?
@@uchabidzinashvili6927 Oh I see. At the 4:40 mark of the video I put text that the piston should be turned back. If it was really tough to push back you might have broken the parking brake mechanism. Is your car an automatic or manual transmission? Not that it makes much of a difference now. Could take it to the local shop and get their opinion on it. Check the wrecking yards for your year of Mazda to get a replacement caliper (or buy new). Make sure to search for the correct country of origin as brake parts differ from Japan and Mexico.
@@brentworksgarage Do you think the caliper is damaged? I don't want to have to buy a new one but it's an automatic and I really need a handbrake, it's made in Mexico and I hope I can get it, thank you very much
@@uchabidzinashvili6927 The brakes should work fine for normal driving operation, but I think you may have broken the internals for the parking brake. I think that is what someone did to my brakes on one side (other side still holds the car). Luckily you have an auto transmission so the transmission will hold the car, but it would be nice to have all parts working as they should. Check RockAuto.com or local wrecking yards for a replacement. In your case Mexican made Mazda3. I am not sure if there is a rebuild kit for the parking brake assembly. Good luck.
Great help thanks. I wish my rotors had come off as easy as on the video 😡😁
can i do to my mazda CX5 from Japan wuth the same mothode ?
My particular CX-5 was built in Japan and sent over to North America. Should work with yours as well. Try putting it in maintenance mode first, and going from there.
I pressed 5 times on starter switch ,but you only.pressed 3 times
@@progress-l6q Need to have the ignition on (2 presses), then with the gas pedal pushed to the floor AND holding the park brake button down, press the ignition 3 times. So yes, 5 times total does make sense. 0:12 second mark in the video shows this. Good luck.
Done off camera 😂

finally someone that provides mm measurements.. ty
I used your video to Fck up my gf's car :P Basically, you really glossed over a VERY important part.......MAINTENANCE MODE FIRST! All who watch, make sure to put it in maintenance mode BEFORE taking off the calipers. Don't ask me how I know.
Sorry to hear, but it states within the first 5 seconds that vehicle must be put in Maintenance Mode first, before changing the rear brakes. Then I show how it is done.
@@brentworksgarage Yup, for about 2 seconds. It's MY fault I missed it, I'm just saying it is a major part of the job and should be emphasized. I didn't catch it.
Suggestion ... Watch the video, then rewatch the video again several times, or as needed whenever you are attempting to do the same. Overall straight forward video. Definitely helped me DIY and save me some money.
how did you fix it?
@@CA_Productions827 Bought new calipers.
Do you take the car out of service mode when changing to the other side? Or can I leave it in service mode until I have completed both sides.
If you have to move the vehicle (ie turn it around in your garage so it is easier to work on), I would go through the process take it out of service mode, move the vehicle and then put it back in service mode again. If car doesn't need to be moved then just go ahead and do the other side while in maintenance mode.
BRENTWORKS GARAGE, here is what I a can see in the manual about Mazda 2016 Read Brake replacement description: _"If the piston grooves are not at the positions shown in the figure, rotate the piston clockwise slowly using the SST and adjust the piston grooves at the positions shown in the figure."_ SST stands for Special Service Tool. *Could you please clarify if piston should be pushed while rotated or not pushed at all while rotated?* 👉 *UPDATED a few days later.* Now it is clear, that for 2016 Mazda CX-5: 1. Rear calipers piston SHOULD NOT BE PUSHED while rotated. 2. This rotation should be performed ONLY IF NEED (in most cases there is NO need for this) to adjust the grooves position on the caliper piston and this rotation should be done SLOW and CLOCKWISE and ONLY TO NEAREST 90 DEGREE POSITION of these grooves. On page 80 in manual for Mazda 2016 in section "REAR BRAKE CALIPER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION" is clearly stated the following WARNING: - - - - - - - *When pressing the piston into the rear brake caliper, the rear brake caliper internal parts could be* *damaged while rotating and pressing the piston. Be careful not to rotate the piston when pressing the* *piston into the rear brake caliper.* - - - - - - -
That would be for CX-5's with a cable parking brake (pull handle), not the electronic one. Look at the figure, it shows the parking brake cable where the electronic parking brake motor is. Procedure I show in the video is not wrong. Thanks for watching.
@@brentworksgarage , _> "That would be for CX-5's with a cable parking brake (pull handle), not the electronic one."_ 1. @@FirstNameLastName-ov3cw Hmm Strange. I have never seen (in text or video) of turning the piston while compressing WITH an EPB. Just looked online and other Mazda models with EPB performed the same method as shown in this video.
@@brentworksgarage , _> "I have never seen (in text or video) of turning the piston while compressing WITH an EPB."_ You can see it starting at 17 min 14 seconds on the video that you could find on TH-cam by this name: *2016 Mazda CX5 How to Replace Rear Brake Pads & Rotors with EPB (Electronic Parking Brake)* P.S. Keep in mind, I am not sure that person on this video doing everything right, I just think that he is doing at least something right.
@@FirstNameLastName-ov3cw I watched the video and I don't agree with his method. Hearing the winding of the EPB motor at 18:25 mark makes me cringe. I did some digging and found a manual download here: mazdas247.com/forum/t/free-workshop-manual-2nd-generation-cx-5-kf.123878000/ In the conventional brake system PDF, page 84 states a caution: "When pressing the piston into the rear brake caliper, the rear brake caliper internal parts could be damaged while rotating and pressing the piston. Be careful not to rotate the piston when pressing the piston into the rear brake caliper." If you feel confident turning while pressing the piston back, feel free to do so, but as far as I am concerned I haven't provided any misinformation on the matter. Thanks for the discussion :)
What do you do if your caliper guide pins don't come loose?? They spin free even if I hold the internal nut on the caliper. This video is missing a step
If they are spinning freely they should come out. Might have to put the caliper bracket in a vise, grab some pliers and pull and turn the guide pins. The rubber bushing on the bottom pin does make it difficult some times to remove. Good luck.
Hello, do you need to initialize the battery after you replace it?
No, not on a vehicle without i-stop. Just swap in new battery. IF your car does have i-stop you will need to initialize the battery. Thanks for your comment. I will update my description to reflect this.
What is your source for these code sequences?
Found it online. Search "cx-5 maintenance mode"
I rotate the pistion when I did the job and I also did not put it on service mode. I have since redone the job the correct way but I sometimes have brake drag. I stopped using the parking brake in the meantime but is this issue due to the caliper or EPB. Also, is a caliper replacement a straightforward job or is there any special instructions I should look out for. I'm scared of doing the job and messing it up somehow because of information I wasn't aware of. " like the service mode"
I haven't had to replace the caliper myself. I *think* you can remove the electronic parking brake motor off the back of the caliper, replace with the new caliper and then re-install the parking brake motor. Best to research more prior to tackling the job.
Thanks and well done on the vid , looking forward to more cx-5 maintenance videos.
