You brought home a jewel im my opinion, i love seeing people bring back to life these sweet old jewels of farming, i was never a farmer but my old pop was and i used to go with my mother many, many times to bring my father his lunch while he was operating everything from tractors like this and cotton pickers, combines, articulating 4x4 big tractors, even big dozer's he would plow hundreds of acres with, i sure do miss thos old days and at 65 years old i wish i could get out there and work those fields like my old pop used to, R.I.P. daddy i miss you with all my heart.❤

Sure does!
Kinda wish these companies still existed and this old equipment get rebuilt
That would be a great, I wish that you could buy parts still!
Those 8ns be in demand if they had a 2-71 repower kit made available.
For sure! They had the Funk conversation for v8 flat heads and for the inline 6. I guess you could make one and call it a Funky Ford or maybe a Screaming Henry.
@@Recommended_by_Fred now a SCREAMING HENRY that be cool! The Dirty Duece!
Very educational for my behalf. Kinda makes me understand more of the old Bosch pumps that I have in my B models.
@@davidbowser2395 Thank you for the kind words! Injection pumps were always a mystery so I decided to dive in.
@@Recommended_by_Fred could you do a video where you take apart the injector pump itself apart. Still trying to get mine freed up. All six of my injector plungers are stuck.
@@davidbowser2395 they like to stick when they sit, I ended up freeing mine up by tapping on the rack back and forth and spraying PB blaster in the pump bodies. There are different degrees of stuck mine might not have been too bad. I have loosened up several this way and they ran ok afterwards. The main takeaway is to tap, not clobber the rack. See what you can do, I could make a video of a tear down if you need it.
@@Recommended_by_Fred please. I got my plungers freed up today but how do I know that my throttle works. I was able to get the shut off rack to move in an out but how do I know that throttle works too?
@@davidbowser2395 the plungers are connected to a geared rack. In the video you can see the plungers rotate and are move by the rack. The rack has the governor connected on one end and a cover on the other. As long as that is moving freely back and forth you should be good. There should be no drag on this at all, if there is keep lubricating and working it back and forth. When back on the truck, I would loosen the lines and see if it is pumping fuel out before trying to start. Just make sure you have the air intake off and make a stop block to cut the air from the engine in case it would try to over rev and run away. I always have my trusty 2x10 stop block handy, and a co2 fire extinguisher when starting engines that sit for a while.
I have one that I am fixing to scrap it is missing the top pice throw me a price it is in Arkansas
I will tell them when I see them at the next show.
I still like the ones with the flathead v/8 conversion they look and sound great.
I agree! Pretty much any re-power on these is cool. I want to see one with a 6v53 Detroit!
Lol this was like watching Bert and Ernie review a tractor! Detroits where actually know for there fuel efficiency in the day. And I liked this one : the 71 series was more quiet then the 53 series! What ? Lol that's a new one for me . I liked the video it was funny thanks for the content!
It makes for some entertainment, and everyone should have their opinion. I will go play with my rubber ducky now…
The front axle struts are stock 8N Ford.
Thank you, we stand corrected sir!
Very crude and very cool all at the same time. 😄
I don’t think any item was bought for the project. You could see where everything was repurposed. This guy was way head of his time with the recycling! Probably out of necessity!
Cool Tractor,In the Coast Guard we had many patrol and small tugs with 2-71's to power generators.Had fun working on them.
The tag on the bellhousing has information about it being a generator set, so it very well could be military surplus. Thanks for watching!
What an improvement on the 8N so this Ferguson clone now develops 48 horse power at 1800 rpm what a beast
I think a 253 would have fit better but the 271 is what they had. It appears to work very good! Wonder what would happen if we got a plow on this thing? Future video idea?
2-71's were adaptive motors due to removable bell housing 53s do not have that. Very few were used cause of that. That looks like a Funk hood and steering from inline6-v8 kit with steering or a copy of it. Very intresting. FYI make sure you have a hi flow oilbath on the Detroit it will scavenge the oil and run wild!!! make sure your trap door works and the window gally port drain is open..
I'm not a ford tractor guy and Detroit engines are the only thing good to come from GM but I like it. Call it a 71N!
Project 71-N… secret undercover delta stealth covert operation…
Pretty sure that W.C Horton built that tractor. I used to work for him and he told me a story about building an 8N with a Detroit engine off of an old welding machine. Welder was bad but engine was good. Tractor had bad engine. So put the two together.
Dakota said he got it south of Atlanta GA. If I recall. That would make sense.
isn't this how ya make all fords better? ford motors suck!
Every one has a right to their own opinion. I’m glad you enjoyed the content!
The original engines to these totally sucked ass. If you used them like a tractor, you needed to rebuild them every year. Every part of them were totally junk. Flat head dry sleeve has never worked. This is the happiest this tractor will ever be. In fact, it's only GOOD one ive ever seen
These were made to a price point. I personally have not cared that much for any of the Ford tractors. I does seem that they filled a need and were successful at it.
Most guys bore the block and put pistons in it without sleeves, helps with cooling and helps do an overbore, cool stuff
had a neighbor that overhauled several Fords every winter. Had waterbath aircleaners which were culprits if anything!
detroits are awesome!!!!
They are good at turning diesel fuel into lots of noise! Got to love’m.
The BusGreaseMonkey NEEDS THIS! XDD
Well I guess I need to check them out!
Them old Ford tractors the engine is the front frame. Front end bolts directly to the engine. The engine doesn’t bolt to the frame because it’s designed to be the frame. The gear box for your transmission and the sump for the PTO and the rear differential are also the frame. Minimal design.
I agree, this would have been the 4th major redesign since the original Fordson tractor. Looks like they learned a lot along the way.
Yeah I think He ru would be proud. He wouldn’t be proud that someone thinks a diesel better than his 32HP gas engine but he would be proud that someone made it work for their situation and fuel accessibility.
From what I have read about the man, he was all about innovation, but only on his terms!
8N didn’t have 32hp stock. And as far as tractors go, that Detroit is light years ahead of the stock Ford engine in quality and durability.
@@justinstearns9723 i think it would be fair to say it probably would cost as much to produce the Detroit engine as the entire tractor. Also, most operators would be pretty hard to grasp at the complexity of the Detroit over the model A ford type engine. Simple and cheap was the watchword for the 8n, less horsepower would mean they wouldn’t break as easily. I see your point!
Kind of reminds you of a John Deere 435 in concept but not quite in execution.
We found a 435 John Deere at the show and it was amazing how much smaller the 253 was compared to the 271. The 271 was much quieter though!
The engine was the frame !!!
Yes sir! We looked at an another 8n at the show and seen that. The Detroit block must have plenty of strength.
The oil pan was the frame.
No..but he didnt approve of much
Ha! That’s what I have been lead to believe.
That tractor is built Ford tough with GM stuff !
The original hybrid!! Thanks for watching! Consider checking out my other content and possibly subscribing.
Some creative engineering to make everything come together. Must have been an old time farmer
The dude had some skills! It appears that he didn’t buy anything to make this work. Everything was built from scratch or made to work from something from the junk pile.
Very cool stuff
Thank you! I would like to invite you check out more cool stuff on my other videos.
Here's some wisdom, only start tractors from the seat. When he put his hand on the key, I thought to myself, "This is how people get killed."
Yes you are correct! I thought about editing that out of the video, but changed my mind. It can show how easy it can happen. Be honest, a lot of us have done it and known better. Farm tractor safety is no joke! Be safe out there!
Normally I do...I just got distracted...that's why I said I couldn't believe I broke my own rule
I have a 641 work master you can not start that tractor in gear it has the factory safety switch so I don’t worry about it to much.
Still can't believe I broke my own rule...lol...thanks for having me on!
Good thing she has to crank a bit to start! Shake hands with danger‼️ glad to have you and your tractor on the channel, good start for the season!
I wouldn't put oil in that aircleaner. It could run away on the oil if got sucked into the engine.
👍👍
Thanks for the thumbs up!

Cool Jeep 😎
It definitely is!!
Good video, I have the same problem with a 85’ r model.
Most of the time the spring the throttle lever is loose/broken. It will do the same thing and is on the outside of the governor. Mine was farther in the governor but had similar actions. Might concider to like and subscribe if you liked the video.. thank you!

Thanks!!! Only if I could look half this good….
Curious on the runout after all these years. That machine has been in service for a long time. Well made.
If you don’t crowd it she does an excellent job. The bit will walk out and gouge the cylinder if you take too much a pass. I need to see if the spring is weak on the poppet that holds the bit in the holder. It has no taper from to bottom, I paid 86 bucks for it on eBay 20 years ago!
Quanto costa macina che coglie mais grazie
Usato, 930€ ( in English…used,around 1000 dollars)
Did you have part numbers for what you changed?
Sorry, I don’t. I used parts from a known good pump governor. If there is the least bit of play it will cause it to surge.
Merry Christmas buddy
Merry Christmas to you as well! Enjoy the video!
I have a 504 bean picker just like this one, we use ours in purple hull peas. They sure beat hurting your back all the time
I would love to get one of these machines in action! I would think it would make a good demonstration for sure.
Love watching the old ones running
I enjoy it too! I like the demonstrations much more than the static displays with perfect paint. I can appreciate the hard work involved with a thorough restoration.
Spent hundreds of hours on one of those machines. You sure got cold due to the fact that you were standing up with no wind protection. When it got wet we used a Case tractor with Case-O-Matic drive to push you when it got slick. We had a 4 cylinder and a 6 cylinder machines. Lots of memories. Thank You. 😊😊😊
Glad you enjoyed it! The fan blew right on your back it it was still hooked up. I had no idea how agile these machines were in soft ground, farmers used to not harvest as early in the season as they do today.
When we was kids my dad picked corn with a 88 Oliver and the same picker. He'd let us ride in the wagon.
Sounds like my childhood! What would OSHA say about children riding in a grain wagon! You survived just fine.
They were made in my hometown of Batavia New York! Great video!
That’s really cool! So, was the big tractors made in Wisconsin and the implements and small tractors made in New York?
@@Recommended_by_Fred I’m not 💯 sure. The street they built the combines and pickers on is named Harvester Avenue, don’t think tractors were ever built there.
@Thewaywefarm Alrighty, combines were a big offering from Massey Harris so it makes sense to have a dedicated plant for them, I bet these pickers and combines share a lot of parts.
I wonder if the variety of corn grown back in the day made a difference in how clean the end product was?
It sure did! Corn today has two ears per stalk, earlier variety’s only had one. Older hybrids dried much slower, so the corn had a higher moisture content which made the kernel stay on the cob much better. The corn went in a crib that promotes air flow during the cold drier winter months to dry the corn naturally. Small things that have changed over time.
Where was this again?
Boonville Indiana, it’s kind of a big deal! You would like it.
@@Recommended_by_Fred our Allis state show was there, but I didn't make it, I worked. Started hauling at Menards last week of Sept. Didn't know they had corn picking down there, I'll have to bring a picker next year!!
as i remember we could get 6to8 good loads a day
Thank you!
back in the 1950,s i was 18 drove one of these a lot.was a pretty good picker.
Thank you for the comment! How fast could you pick with this machine?
@@Recommended_by_Fred probably as fast is this guy's going because of how cold the weather was back then
