I-35 NEX South 1 - January 2025
Is the mystery of Stonehenge that it’s an incomplete highway bridge?
A quick look at the pilar-like caps topping columns adjacent to I-35 just south of the I-410 interchange might make you wonder.
Construction of the I-35 structures is not as enigmatic as that of Stonehenge, but it’s still amazing.
In the video, a crane sets a 75,000-pound cap on two 35-foot-tall bridge columns at night, perfectly aligning the holes in the cap with the steel bars in the top of the column.
These are the first structures of their kind on the first phase of I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) South.

I know that it's more expensive but it should be elevated to flashing red lights not just stop signs.
The cost associated with the lights is usually the reason we don't do that - we're trying to spread around a very limited budget, and those flashing red lights significantly jump the cost of installation - including additional cost for a specialized crew - as well as the cost of equipment and the cost of maintenance. When a stop sign is adequate - as is the case at most intersections like this - we stick with the stop signs only. The flashing beacon is used more in rural settings, when we have two country highways intersecting.
