Hi! I'm a carillonist, which means I play big tower bells. I like to play film scores and pop songs, alongside classical and contemporary music, and my own compositions.
I'm currently switching gears to dive more into the acoustics, music theory, instrument techniques and design, so I'm decreasing my upload frequency for now. New videos up at 8am Eastern every other Saturday.

Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677) was an Italian baroque composer and singer. Strozzi published eight volumes of her own music, and had more secular music in print than any other composer of the era. This is the first movement of Che si può fare (What Can One Do), originally for Soprano and basso continuo. Theme from "Jupiter" - bells of Antwerp Cathedral
มุมมอง 4.4K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
The tower of Antwerp Cathedral is the tallest bell tower in Belgium, measuring 123 meters (404 ft) high. And the carillon bells are some of the most historic, with 36 Hemony bells from 1655. This is a clip from my concert on July 8, 2024. I'd played this instrument many times when I was at school in Belgium, but it had been 10 years or so since I'd been back to Antwerp. Join me and my host, Hylke Banning, for a tour of the St. Plechelmus Basilica tower in Oldenzaal, The Netherlands. The carillon is a mix of Gillett & Johnston and Eijsbouts, with an additional historic bell from Geert van Wou, and a new bell by Abel Portilla cast in the old style. Really a fascinating and unique set of bells! The six largest bells here can swing, though we only swung the two la...

Which songs actually sound in tune on bells?
I really love it it's beautiful
Great performance! Just listened several times. Thanks for the recording. To my ear, this arrangement is a tad cacophonous. We would lose the melody in the middle section if we weren’t already so familiar with the tune. Then I noticed that the arrangement is not yours. So my question is, to what degree does the individual carillon dictate how well an arrangement will work? Or would this arrangement sound pretty much the same on most carillons? Is voicing easier on some carillons than it is on others? Are carillons well-tempered? The overtones may well be some of what my ear is hearing as muddle. On a sidenote, I’ve only played one (rudimentary) carillon that had no pedalboard - but would you say most carilloners are organists? Sorry, my question turned into four question. 😂 Carillon in one of the few instruments I’ve never arranged for…so many questions!
I’ve rung here too many times😂😂
I haven't watched yet, my guess is wind. Same thing happens to bands with possibility of blowing them into correct tune.
Joey, I love your videos! I am a huge fan of carillons! I give glory to god I was able to perform on Arizona’s Only Carillon! I will be giving you a shout out so check it out! I will tag you
Wow! This looks so hard-I’ve never actually seen a carillon played before (even though our university has one). And what a beautiful building-I gotta visit one day! Thanks for sharing your playing!

Why this doesn't have a million views is incredibly disheartening. This is absolutely astonishing and beautiful is far too simple a term to describe. Thank you creating and sharing.
Very interesting and informative! But a thought occurred while watching you play - that does not look easy, how does one learn carillon? I mean, how/where do you practice? I thought it was great to get a digital piano with headphones so I don't annoy my wife, but your sessions involve a whole town.
Bravo!
very novel. But I can't help wishing I might hear you two play it on a celesta. something with less dwell.
Oof, that sustain! (j/k beautifully played!
This sounds AMAZING ! On most pieces I'm quite sensitive about the "harmonic friction" caused by the minor third overtones of carillon bells, but for some reason I barely heard it in this piece (maybe because there aren't many major thirds ?)
maybe more so due to the chromatic movement in the piece :-)
@joeybrinkbells ah maybe
Always love to see a Joey Brink notification on my phone screen 😁
You sir, are costing me my question in the most positive way. Plying those bells! Play them well! (They watch)
Very cool!
Of all my new video notifications this was the one I rushed to. I must admit that at first I was a bit disappointed, met by carillon four hands instead of a real duet. Then I realised that there are probably no place on Earth that you could actually play a carillon duet... Or is there a town with two carillons within earshot? How awesome would that be! And in the end, I was not disappointed at all, Sugarplum Fairy is almost made for bells and sounds absolutely fantastic in your hands.
Great question! There are some places where you could conceivably play two carillons at the same time. Some towers have two carillons in them! The problem is those carillons are usually not tuned to each other. Something I have seen done, though is not duet between tower carillon and mobile carillon. It's pretty fun! Thanks for watching!
LOVED THAT!
Beautiful!

Joey; Who were your Carillon teachers? You play so beautifully. Where is the Barnes place recorded? BRAVO!!
Thank you! This is at University of Denver. I've had a lot number of teachers but primarily studied with Ellen Dickinson, Eddy Marien, and Geert Dhollander
Joey; Nicely done! Ron is smiling down on you from heaven. He was very biased toward other carillonists. He was a vituroso. He would have been very fond of your performance of this great Barnes work. Thanks!!
I'm so pleased and proud of you for spreading the Joy of the Carillon wherever you go! It's an amazing spiritual and powerful voice of peace in this troubled world.
beautifully played
Bravo! Enchanting and mystical!
Love this song❤
Joey, play "Angry Young Man"😂

BRAVO! Joey, you ARE the Wizard of the Carillon!
You play this wonderful instrument with great feeling. A joy to listen to.
Dude you don't realise that this is a carrilon bell
That was beautiful, thank you!
This is beautiful and the sunlight streaming through batons makes it magical. I love the glissando (if that's what you call it) at the end. I'm surprised a carillon could do that, although I don't know why I am considering what I've seen you do on it in the past. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! Glissandos work on the top half of the instrument, but then the bells get too heavy by the middle, so I have to skip that register and jump right to the bass note :-)
I apologize, I should have said if that's what it's called not if that's what you call it. I just didn't know what it was called. 😊
I love this channel! This is pretty random but I think it would be cool if you did the Elden ring theme.
this place is near the place where i live, AMAZING!
thank you for visting my country
MORE!!!!!! So magnificent.
absolutely astonishing sound for a 300 year old bell, i can see it was tuned with hammers and chisels
can you play more coldplay?
Very nice. Thank you for sharing.
5 dudes😱😱😱 3:50
You really hear the bell ring, like there is a constant humming while the bell is being struck. Cool video!
yeah that's called the hum tone, it exists in all bells but in certain ones like this one it's more present
Amazing chanel
That C/E chord sounded really bluesy! The Bb overtone in the G bell and the high Eb overtone from the C bell made the chord sound like a C7#9, often known as the Hendrix chord (from it's use in the song Purple Haze). You didn't talk that much about the overtones in the other chord tones of a chord. I would imagine that the G overtone in the E bell should make that note a bit more consonent, no? I'm also wondering, when playing minor chords, do you sometimes leave the actual minor third bell out of the chord, when in root position? Like in a C minor, when the Eb is already present as an overtone, adding the Eb bell would add a Gb overtone to the chord, which might make it sound less stable.
Great questions! Yes, the E will naturally give a G overtone, lending a bit more consonance to that chord, but I find it's the thirds of the root that most people really hear more. Check out my video on diminished scale, by the way - I get a bit more into stacking overtones: th-cam.com/video/0BNtaNNfUR8/w-d-xo.html And yes! Especially if I want a thin texture, just playing one bass bell is enough to get a minor chord :-)
Awful sound.
Me when there's major chords inside minor keys
or, since the Eb is technically louder than both C tones, you could always play an Eb major chord over a C pedal for some spice
I like that!
Very nice video, but - sorry, I have to disagree. Even with those tricks, major-key harmonies on carillon still sound bad. One can perhaps get used to this sound, but IMO it just goes against the grain, it's like transferring a solemn piano part to kazoo or an expressive violin solo to tuba. Not to say it can't be done, but I only see it making sense as a joke or caricature. That sad, there is a legitimately effective way to use carillon in major keys: by avoiding the root notes altogether and have them played by other instruments instead.
I think that's a valid position to take. There's something to be said for getting used to the sound. I've been playing and listening to bells a long time, so the minor overtones really don't bother me too much. But, I still do stand by the need to play music in major keys on bells. People want to hear Pachelbel on the bell tower at a wedding, or Pomp & Circumstance at a graduation ceremony. I have to play it, and so, I might as well play it in a way that minimizes that clashing of overtones
Hey don't diss the tuba, it's a very expressive instrument
@@reloup38 I didn't diss the tuba. Sure it is a good instrument of its own right with good uses... including, to accompany carillon with the root notes in a major key! But you can't claim that taking any nontrivial violin part and squeezing it through a tuba would sound good.
