Heart Attack Ethiopia: 3rd Mission - The Start of Week 2
The Heart Attack Ethiopia team at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) and the Cardiac Centre Ethiopia kicked off Week 2 of our medical mission trip to Ethiopia. This briefing comes from the surgical team, including Dr. Federico Milla (cardiothoracic surgeon from Denver), Leslie Armstrong and Elizabeth Devereaux (Registered Nurses from Piedmont Atlanta Hospital), and Pavel Vitalyevich (from the Mayo Clinic). The surgical team started Week 2 with a successful coronary bypass surgery as they worked tirelessly alongside our incredible Ethiopian colleagues. It's a humbling experience to work with these dedicated professionals in a country with such a critical need for cardiovascular care. As you will hear Dr. Milla note, Ethiopia has only four cardiovascular surgeons for 130 million people! You are doing great! Maybe one Question, How can we communicate to send patients from outside Addis like Gondar? For example this week, A 50 year old man presented to the University of Gondar Hospital with typical angina pain of 6 hours duration, ECG shows anterolateral STEMI with reciprocal changes in the inferior leads with highly elevated troponin, now he is in the ICU on medical treatment for a week. Any possible way to transfer such patients? Thank you.

I came across your work through the Saifu Show and wanted to thank you for the amazing effort you’re putting into saving lives from heart attacks in Ethiopia. After watching two episodes, I was deeply touched by your mission. Heart attacks are sudden and deadly, and your work to train local doctors in Addis Ababa to handle these emergencies is inspiring. However, I worry about people living in rural areas or smaller towns outside Addis. Many may not even realize they’re having a heart attack, and hospitals there might not have the tools or training to help them in time. Could you share your plans to reach these communities? Are there simple tools, training programs, or mobile apps being considered to help people recognize symptoms faster or get urgent care? I also wonder how your team is working with the Ethiopian government to tackle this problem nationwide. Training community health workers, raising awareness about heart attack signs, or partnering with local clinics could save more lives. Lastly, a huge thanks to Dr. Obse Merid, Dr. Tesfaye Telila, and your entire team. What you’re doing is life-changing, and I believe your work could lead to building more hospitals across Ethiopia in the future. Keep going-you’re making history!
