When I first saw this movie I was awestruck. The composition and photography will blow your mind. Watch it in the original language with subtitles if you need them - avoid dubbed versions. I've also read the source book by Moravia because I was so inspired. Thank you for this video essay.

I see the cockerel as a bird who cannot fly therefore its freedom is limited (as opposed to birds of flight). I think the scene where Maria kills the cockerel is supposed to represent her sacrificing her freedom for Aleksei. Maria takes on the burden of sacrificing her freedom so her son doesn't have to -- if you remember both Maria and the doctors wife are debating on who should slaughter the bird when the doctors wife suggests Aleksei, Maria then protests and volunteers herself to do it. I wanted to bring up the bird when Maria is levitating (levitation is also used in Solaris) which symbolizes enlightenment. This scene is very allusive and most have drawn different conclusions about it but I think it is when Maria conceives Aleksei and the bird that is flying away represents unbound immortality that flows from the material space and into the spiritual/metaphysical space. Maria is transcending earthly limitations like time and is not bound by physical constraints because as she has conceived Aleksei she ensures her life continues to flow "from age to age" thus momentarily breaking the barriers between the material world and the metaphysical space where ideas and forms like souls are born. In my analysis I believe this to be related to how Plato saw the relationship between the material world and the metaphysical world. Plato believed that time is just a moving image of eternity. Time is a measure of change and motion in the physical world. It is the imperfect reflection of the eternal and unchanging realm of the forms and ideas. As Maria is suspended in time between the two spaces Aleksei is born and his soul travels from the unchanging realm of ideas and forms to the material space where Maria becomes a conduit hence the moment of suspension.

As a non-believer, I can only say that the film is just as deeply moving to me as it would be to one of faith, which Tarkovsky was. It is just as easy to see the bird motifs as that which represents a communality that unites mankind, but is fragile and can be fleeting. I saw this film not long after its release, and it remains one of my all time favourites which can be viewed over and over again.
