Camara Sailing
New Zealand
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 1 ธ.ค. 2016
We are a family of four salty souls that have been living the sailing & cruising lifestyle for over 20 years with both our kids coming ‘along the way’. For us there is no final destination - it’s a lifestyle choice! Our days are usually spent kitesurfing, surfing, spearfishing or exploring!
We are now ‘Living the Dream’ aboard our second boat, an 80ft former Whitbread race yacht which we've rescued, rebuilt and converted for 3.5 years into a comfortable and fast cruising yacht. It was a mammoth project with no outside help or funding but the end result was worth the effort and she’s been our floating home since we launched her in late 2018 taking us to incredible spots around the South Pacific.
As a qualified and experienced boatbuilder and seasoned sailors we share our boat projects with you along with our adventures.
Thanks for watching!

ENGINE REBUILD (Ep. 28) | Rebuilding our 185hp diesel engine on our boat
มุมมอง 3.5K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video we tackle the rebuild of our 185hp diesel engine aboard Camara. When we rebuilt the boat we never could afford to replace the engine, so we gave it a service and have been dealing with oil leaks and dirty bilges ever since. We finally saved up and ordered a rebuild kit from the UK and when we went on the dock during cyclone Gabrielle we thought we kill two birds with one stone and...

This video is a short product review for the Hollyland Solidcom C1 Pro headsets. For us it's the first time in over 20 years of sailing that we use 2-way communication aboard. We usually have a set of hand signals we use but after using those headsets we've realised how convenient it is to be able to talk to each other, especially on a large boat like Camara. @@Camarasailing youre welcome!
Having lived in the Virgin Islands for 20+ years, I was much inspired by the designs of Dick Newick and good friend Roger Hatfield. Have sailed on quite a few and eventually decided to build a Lock Crowther Twiggy Mk IIB up in the hills of Tortola. Couldn't do that with Roger or Dick's designs, cos "Wingover" was built in separate units and assembled on the beach. (Now that Launch Party was a PARTY !!) She took me 4 years to build, she sailed beautifully and was very easy on the eye, with wingmast, mast lowering struts, water ballasting, spade rudder assy., whipstaff steering, etc. I sold her some time ago and since she like us, has sailed to Europe and completed many of the intensely gruelling Round Britain and Ireland Race, winning her class in one. She was last seen in Isle de Oleron (near La Rochelle) in France. Roger Hatfield was incredibly helpful and I do miss that 'island style' way of life. Fair winds and broad reaches to y'all ! Bill
Thank you for this lovely video of Minerva! Definitely on my bucket list! Sailed from Vava'u to NZ a few years back but the weather was bad and we had to sail past Minerva! I was heart broken! Hope you get to visit our little island in Vava'u, Taunga. It's beautiful! Enjoy!

Thank you! We know, it seems crazy but the prop pushes her just fine. Though our 185hp is quite thirsty so we only motor if we have to, we try and sail as much as we can! Luckily she doesn’t need much wind to slip through the water. Thanks for watching!
a real labour of love . enjoy ..
Thank you
This is a really nice boat. Not "good for a scrappy conversion" but just properly nice. It's simple. pretty cramped for an 80-footer, but four cabins, three bathrooms, all well done and properly holding... what more does one want? Will you ever reveal how much you spent on all this beauty including the conversion? I wonder how it looked in its time. I also wonder how fast it goes? I follow another family here on youtube who did a racer conversion. But they chose an IMOCA-60 (66?) boat for conversion. Very different boat, and a different result. Craaaazy!!!! 🙂 But it flies 20 knots on just a main and a jib... and chews through sails like cheese. I wonder how racy your racer is. How deep is your keel, by the way? Yes, I watched the resoration slideshow, might have missed it. Anyway, cool boat. Good job! Kudos.
Thank you. She’s actually got 5 cabins and an additional 3 open berths. We’ve had our family come cruise with us for a few weeks and it’s nice not being crammed in even when there were 9 of us on the boat. The reason we haven’t revealed the final cost is because it is hard to put a number to it considering we did all the work ourselves and got a lot of materials at really good prices. We spent about NZ$300k excluding our time etc. The other boat you are following is probably our friends on NV. Very different kind of boats and very different kind of refits. She’s faster than our boat but in terms of a conversion to a comfortable cruiser I think ours is more practical with a 2.7m draft, a dry inside of the boat when sailing and most importantly privacy. Something that was important for us cruising as a family for over 20 years and especially once the kids were teenagers! We usually cruise at a speed of 8-10kts without pushing which is fast enough for us. The fastest we’ve sailed her is at 15kts. Previous owners have sailed at speeds above 20kts but like I said we don’t push her like that. Her racing days are over and we try and make the gear last and avoid breakage and stressing out the rig… Thanks for following along :-)
quality work mate was this the boast that was at smoke house bay on kings birthday weekend
Yes it was! Our friends now own it and we were there on our boat as well!

Can you please help me by telling that I have to go from Fiji to New Zealand. I only want a cruise ship from Fiji to Samoa and Auckland. Please note that Apia Samoa (Not American Samoa) . Fiji, Suva, Apia Samoa and finished Auckland New Zealand. Please reply me. Thanks for your video ☺️❤
Not sure which routes you can take on cruiseships in this area but you won’t regret it. The South Pacific islands are all amazing! Personally I would prefer a sailboat to a cruiseship but if that’s what you enjoy then go for it!
thank you very much.
well done
You mean, that you actually had to pay for this boat yourself?????
What it means is that unlike most of the yachts from this era that have sponsors, we didn’t and Yes - we paid for the boat and the entire rebuild ourselves and did the work ourselves.
Question: is it only two of you living on this 80foot sailing Yacht ? Such a beautiful boat and the work you’ve put into it is astounding.
It has been four of us (the two of us and our two children) until January this year but our son is now working as a deckhand on a 74ft Sunreef catamaran so now it’s just the three of us 😉
Impressive, what a build, thank you for the tour
Thank you ☺️
Hello, what a wonderful rebuild. Little Wing is a beauty. Can you remember the material thicknesses of Hull, Wingdeck (bottom and top) and the Bulkheads? I'am thinking of designing a replica. Many thanks, Michel
Thank you. We can’t quite remember but tend to think it was two layers of 6mm and the bulkheads were also 12mm. There is a website about dick newick’s designs and if I remember correctly there were plans to purchase as well. Perhaps Google search and you may find a big step towards building your dream boat 😉 Good luck with the project - exciting!
That first clip at the bow looking out under sail, man i felt that emotion for you! What an insane effort, to be heeled over and charging along finally must be an indescribable feeling
It was!!!! Hard to describe that feeling!

One of the best trimaran designs ever. love newick's simplicity and sweet lines. She moves through the water so unruffled. Great job on the paint and restoration. I own a 30 foot condor trimaran that is trailerable. But what a job to take her apart and put her together. Wishing you all the best from us Yanks.

I saw this video shortly after you loaded it and decided I had to visit both places on my way back from Tonga to Fiji and had both of them to myself. The turtles at Duff Reef were amazing, and I had some good kitesurfing there too. Thanks!
That’s awesome! Duff reef can be a bit of a rolly anchorage but we always find it well worth it! Glad the stars aligned for you and you got to see turtles and got some kiting in ;-)

My husband and I crewed on tis boat in the Fastnet Race in 1995. It was a super experience. Now it's quite wonderful to see the incredible transformation you've made. Well done!
Oh wow, we’ve just had someone comment who was crew on the 1995 Fastnet race as well - crazy!!! Thank you so much for the lovely comment!
Any details on the cost of purchase and refit?
If you read through the comments this has been asked quite a bit. It’s a tricky one to answer because this project would cost someone else potentially a whole lot more than what it cost us. We only took her on as a project because we knew we could do all the work ourselves, had no hardstand costs and access to great prices on materials. Between purchase and what we’ve spent we are at around $300-$350k NZD but like I said, that’s with free hardstand, not employing anyone etc.
I sailed on Creighton's Naturally in the 1995 Fastnet during which we anchored as a racing tactic! Absolutely fabulous to see her restored and back where she belongs. Truly well done a magnificent achievement.
Thanks for reaching out! Sounds like an interesting racing tactic! Im sure you got a few stories from your time sailing on her. It’s been awesome to hear from previous crew. There’s quite a few and they all have some great stories to share! A few of them can be found in the comment section 😉
Great team effort. Clear explanations. Well done.
Great review.
ught Hi guys ao i have just bot an 8
I think some of your message is missing 😉
When you hone barrels you are not polishing them and making them shiny, you trying to make a "plateau", so it has an XX pattern at a 45° angle to hold/direct the oil to where its needed and to wear the rings in. You are trying to cut the glaze off and if you just polishing it, or making your hone lines all haphazard at the wrong angles, you just wasting a set of rings and could be damaging the cylinders and then you need to re-bore and go oversize pistons and rings to fix it. And it might look like its working at first but if you don't remove the glaze or you polishing it, the rings wont bite and you'll still get blow back and your lubrication wont be optimal.
Yes, good point, that is why we are moving the drill up and down to cross hatchet. We’ve done this engine rebuild a year ago and the motor is running sweet and the back pressure is gone so we are stoked 😉
nice rebuild, very useful that you're able to drop the oil pan in mounted condition and you didn't have to replace the cylinder sleeves... i asume you overhauled the injectors as well and checked the oil pump for wear.
We actually had the injectors tested 😉(pressure tested)
i found it very funny when you mentioned "and just like that the engine rebuild is done and dusted..."from my experience, given all the tools & parts needed are provided, it would take two skilled mechanics around 4-5 full working days to do the job...@@Camarasailing
@@-TruthHurts I didn’t mean to make it sound like we did it in a day 😉
Wow! Very thorough and very clean when all said and done. Were you able to hire a machine shop locally to dress the head, or did you have to send it back to AU or UK or the like? How long in total were without an engine?
We were lucky there was a local machine shop we could use. It took about 2-3 weeks as we needed to order the big end bearings when we realised we needed to replace them as well and had to wait for them to arrive. We went on to the dock while we were without an engine but timed it so we did it at the same time when cyclone Gabrielle hit NZ, so we would have been in a Marina for that anyways, kind of a kill 2 birds with one stone scenario. We usually don’t spend money on sitting in marinas but no engine and a cyclone meant we spent the money for the dock wisely 😉
Impressive stuff and made easier with a family of engineers well done all.
Thank you 😊
Love those old straight six marinised truck engines! They're great for working on and seem to last forever!
Yes and the spare parts are affordable and you don’t need a computer to run diagnostics 😉
@@Camarasailing yes, even a non-engineer clux like myself with very little knowledge of engines managed to struggle by - though there's no way I would have even considered undertaking the sort of rebuild you did! Well done for managing it without needing to go outside the family!
