🧠 DataMind Audio's Concatenator: What is Concatenative Synthesis?
✨ A deep-dive into audio mosaicing with @encanti putting Concatenator through the ringer. Watch how it perfectly matches grains from the corpus with the input signal. Building from here, we can begin to understand how the Concatenator interprets a realtime audio signal to create a live audio mosaic from an arbitrary collection of samples.

Needs demo!
That’s wild. It’s like an extra terrestrial recreation of the input music!
Lol some people. This sounds awful.
Apex Twin collaborated with dave griffiths to make a similar piece of software called Samplebrain, I would recommend people demo that piece of software before considering spending $150 on something you don't even know you'd use, as this is an advancement of that software
😮😮
THIS IS ONE SICK PUPPY
So this is only using the AI features on what audio files a user puts into it? So it can be 100% ethical so long as all input sounds by the user are also 100% ethically sourced I.e. owned, licensed, self-produced, copyright-free or permissed etc? I'm pretty sure that's the vibe I'm getting and if so that's awesome. It does seem to have a slightly garbled sound to it as does most neural audio these days but could be great fun for experimentative compositions and in this case is just (I think?) combining a bunch of user-provided audio so the ethics of it seem agreeable
Why would anyone want to listen to this garbage?
Sorry to break it to you but: all these 'results' sound absolutely horrible.
Can we (or will we be able to eventually) manipulate our own audio source material instead of using the so-called artists brains?
I really think you folks would benefit from offering a demo
I so far have a hard time appreciating this and Factorsynth 3. It's kind of like when one is walking downtown and two different retail businesses near to each other are piping out completely different songs and over the din of the traffic. It's both stupid and annoying.
Real snake oil moment
Wattba
I want to buy a complete bundle, but shelling out $250 without trying a demo feels to risky. Is there a way to get at least a one day demo or something like that?
Its similar to reformer pro .cool
Since this is using grains, a future update could see this as a grain synth. 1 The grains would be repitched to incoming midi. Repitching could be a slider so we can control n automate the degree of repitching. I imagine this would allow unheard of timbres. 2. Slider or xy for Grains scattered in stereo if not binaural 3d space. 3. Timestretching. 4. Non-timestretched but having that timestretching sound. Slider between algos from smooth to Matrix style glitchy. 5. Reverse and bidirectional grains. 6. Morphing slider from input grain to corpus grain. 7. Normalization/compression of grains. 8. Have a scale selector. In the corpus analysis stage, pre-repitch any tonal grains to nearest pitch in the selected scale. Fun to imagine!
Really good ideas. Of course, having those capabilities built in to Concatenator would be optimal, but have you researched how to do some of these things with external effects? Here, I'll mention products I own, but there are free, perhaps not as polished, alternatives to most of this: Polyverse Manipulator can do exactly #1. Their Filterverse and Supermodal, and Cableguy's ShaperBox and suite of other tools can manipulate any signal in phenomenal ways. Sound Particle's Brightness Panner and Energy Panner can be used for #2 in real-time for any output format up 7.1.2 or third-order ambisonics, all down-converted to binaural as you like. Sound Particle's SkyDust 3D can be used for much wilder #2 spatial audio post-processing of imported samples sampled from the output of Concatenator, outputting them in up to 9.1.6 Dolby Atmos and sixth-order ambisonics. There are tons of freeze, reverse, and other audio morph plugins for the rest: Dawesome Love as an effect, etc. Just think of what you want piecemeal, then search for specific free solutions for each type of manipulation you would like. Consulting one of the better AIs would be best for this. Have fun!
This looks great. I'm thinking maybe a Christmas present to myself.
i wouldn't have expected it to fully recreate that album, because the idea that a plugin always knows which grain to pick from such a long dataset in realtime is insane. so that means i could actually run a song at it and then use the parameters to only sometimes introduce likelyness for 'glitches' without using the traditional dry/wet mix control
GOOD GOLLY MS. MOLLY. gimme
Fantastic, and already one of the leading concatenation synthesis plugins. Amazing work. Is there any chance of adding functionality where we can just explore the samples without trying to do audio resynthesis? E.g. mapping it to sync or an LFO controlling a joystick that moves around the samples? Obviously also cool if we can trigger it using MIDI etc...
not even a demo? no thanks
Wish there was a trial version
there is! the product says "Trial version available"... but its a "7-day money back guarantee". not ideal, but its something.
Does anyone else experience jittery behavior when running audio playback into Concatenator? First two bars of my loop it does what I intend it to do, but then for some reason it gets all scrambled up. Working in Reaper...
This bug has been fixed! Just download the new version and you should be all set.
Best explanation of concatenitive synthesis thus far. Loving this plugin.
Latency is workable in live use if the plug-ins output is routed to a delay. So you’d have the real time no latency direct audio output, and then the delay would come in as normal but with the Effects plug-in output audio.
Can this work with live audio input, with as much latency as a buffer shuffler type plug-in would have? And could you reduce the latency by having The program access the buffer as soon as a few grains/sample chunks have been written to the buffer? So the buffer itself might have an absolute length, but reading from the buffer would be relative to how much of the buffer is filled at any point in time. Thanks.
yes it's really fast! And there's "buffer size" options to make it even faster.
Our laptops powerful enough to run this? What would be the minimum powered laptop that could run this, so when I buy a new laptop I can buy some thing above that and not have to stress about whether it’s powerful enough or not. Thanks!
It's pushing a m1 pro to its limits rapidly here.
This would be a great tool for a DJ or anyone remixing a song!
Funny enough, I went to youtube to feed some raw audio into Concatenator. Figured this video would be a great starting point.... I can't really understand anything Encanti is saying because it's now a series of gutteral Seal grunts and barks. 🤣
So sikk, congrats to the Datamind team for creating such an interesting plugin. Excited to hear the new album btw
Pretty impressive. I wonder how heavy it is on the processor?
im using it with an i9-14900HX and I can push it to max particles and max poliphony in an empty project at 1024 smpls buffer size. So for modern PC's this works very well! You can run it at half particles and half poliphony and its sounding good and running decently..
@@kymatekk Thanks for telling me
i was thinking of buying Morpho by Neutone but this seems a little more flexible and interesting
Does this work with polyphonic audio or can it only use pitch information where only one note is played at a time?
It works on polyphonic audio! There may be diminishing returns past 2 tracks, but theoretically you can keep pushing it
This looks fascinating
Ok i'm starting my career as a ai foley artist
Just bought it & am looking forward to experimenting (and to the updates over the next few months) 👍
This has got to be a joke
Niiiice!!! Puremagnetik's Ember on mega steroids!
This thing can be used as the worlds craziest "resonator"by loading piles and piles of chromatic waveforms. There's a while lot of potential here.
What's up with the beta process? I got no info when ordering. What's the best way to contact you folks? I really like this sort of things but I have problems questions and suggestions.
Hi, there is no trial ?
Not at this time but maybe at a later date. For now, there's a money back guarantee.
No need to pay for this knockoff. Aphex Twin released Samplebrain for FREE 2 years ago.
Thanks for the feedback! This uses a new algorithm that we designed that can load in *huge* corpora in no time. So more like an alternative, rather than a "knockoff." And as Encanti said in another comment, it beats everything out there in terms of accuracy and speed. Have a look at our ISMIR paper if you want more info. And send me a DM if you're having trouble finding it
Also, great graphic design!
Cool! How is this different from your Combobulator vst?
The Combobulator works really well on individual artist models, but each of these has to be trained in isolation. In The Concatenator, there's no training involved; you just drag in a corpus and you can get going right away. @bencantil462 can probably say more about the differences in the use cases than I can
Would Concatenator use legato transition samples between notes?
that's an amazing idea, but no it doesn't repitch samples (yet)
@@encanti how about for Kontakt libraries that already have legato samples? Eg, if I load in a cello library and then sing an A# then legato up to a C, would concatenator recognize and use the cello’s legato sample as a match to my sung legato? Thanks.
@@jrettetsohyt1 Yes it's pretty good at that! As long as the notes are in the corpus, and particle count is keeping up with the library size, it should be accurate. We are currently working on making the grains forceably longer, and adding some envelope controls, so in the coming months I anticipate this use case will get even better.
Also I recommend adding an autotune before the Concatenator on your voice. Pre-processing like this can help the algorithm optimize it's results.
Could I direct it to a Kontakt cello library and then sing to play the cello?
Yes! It may sound a bit "glitchier" than a cello, but you can certainly use a corpus like that
@@ctralie glitch is good hh
This is a ripoff of Aphex Twin’s FREE Samplebrain app. Wouldn't be surprised if the source code was used and this UI was slapped on top.
Rando by Monkey C is just better and way cheaper with no bs AI
Cool, I didn't know about Rando! It depends on what you consider "AI" though. This uses a "particle filter," which is a technique from statistical AI from 20 years ago. But there are no neural nets involved, and so it doesn't need any training. So, for what it's worth, The Concatenator is simpler and faster than a lot of the "AI" trends that are going on now. 🤷♂
