Fractal FM9 MKII Turbo - first impressions
Just got an FM9, and here's a little walk through some of the really cool things on the FM9. I really dig it so far.
Especially the feel/touch between the guitar and the FM9 is great, this is something that's often overlooked 🙂
And so sorry that the board camera ran out of power, during the Cab/Amp walk through. 😅
If you wan't to try the preset it's here:
github.com/olzzon/guitar-patches-presets/blob/main/fractal-fm9/FM9-KAZ01-basic-preset.syx
The preset will be updated as I progress, and other presets will be in that folder 🙂

Fractal FM9 - first live jam
มุมมอง 29119 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
This is a live performance, one take, no click track, just jammin' with the mistakes and (maybe) charme that includes. 🙂 Have just got a Fractal FM9, and have made a setup with 1 preset, 7 scenes, and 2 layouts, and I really think the FM9 feels real, so I'm looking forward to incorporate my Remote controller and maybe the VP4 Together with my PRS SilverSky this is really a joy to play

Today the new Fractal VP4 arrived, and I just had to dial in some basic sounds. And it's so easy to create great sounds with this setup. It simply PRS Silversky directly into Tsakalis Mothership directly into the VP4 And it feels and plays just like I want it to 🙂 You can hear it in action here: th-cam.com/video/_VZOGDX5JEc/w-d-xo.html Tsakalis: tsakalisaudioworks.com/ Fractal: www.fractalaudio...

Tsakalis Mothership - FRFR wins over great Amp
มุมมอง 9844 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video I'll try to demonstrate why I prefer a FRFR/PA speaker over an Amp. And why using an Amp often is more of a joy for the guitarist but not for the Audience. The comparison is between - An old Marshall 50watt with a 2x12" cabinet loaded with 1969 20watt Greenbacks - Tsakalis Mothership tubepreamp with speakersimulator going direct into an active PA speaker. Tsakalis Audioworks Mothership - The new Olympia Greek God
มุมมอง 6926 หลายเดือนก่อน
My first jam with my new Tsakalis Audioworks Mothership Tube Preamp. It's SO good, it's like comming back to my old Marshall 1971 50watt just included all the modern needs. Channel switching is controlled by midi, and looping fx from Boss RC-600. (Everything is bought with my own money, nothing is sponsored, and all playing is done in one take using looper)

Are you happy with fm9?
So far I really love the unit, and haven't found anything I don't like about it, but as I've only had it a few days, I can't say for sure if there will be things I dislike. I will do some follow videos during the next months, so if you subscribe you can follow my journey 🙂
...and which frfr are you using?
FRFR wise I've just got some cheap "the Box" DSX112 something, but again that's not really on the recording 🙂
@@olzzonscorner ...but when you want to hear the FM9 in the room, you take your FRFR - right? or do you listen with monitors
@@timcat88 yes, thats 2 small PA speakers. So pretty much like an Guitar FRFR setup.
It's these www.thomann.de/dk/the_box_pro_dsx_112.htm I haven't spend that much on monitoring, and it probably wouldn't be the one I would recommend, but I think they work okay.
great tones!! did you mic your frfr or direct out of the fm9 to your interface?
Thanks a lot ❤️ It's 99% directly out, had a keyed expander on the mic from my mac, that recorded my voice, and then when getting audio directly from the FM9, it "muted" the computer mic.
@@olzzonscorner ah.. thanks👍🏼
Hi Olzzon, it looks like you´ve also got the Boss RC 600 Looper. I've had only trouble trying to connect the RC 600 with the FM9, in any constellation it sounded - sounds - shit. Playing Live these days I prefer to run the FM9 and the RC 600 separately into the Laney Speakers. But like this I can forget about overdubs, or recording anything at the moment. I mean, I tried it with Humbuster cables & anything the G66 support team (best service people I ever got to know) suggested...I didn´t find the right way to use the RC 600 with the FM9. The sound was always poor. So, may I ask how does it work for you with these two components? BTW nice starter video & great playing!
Yeah, you have to keep things separate. What I've done: FM9: - Output 1 directly to FRFR (Active speaker) - Output 2 or 3 into RC600 RC600: - Set instrument 1 input to Line level. - Turn off direct sound from Instrument 1 to output so it's only track output that is playing. - Main output to FRFR (on a second input) Can't really remember how I did on the RC600 IMHO RC600 has the most terrible menu system, it's like coming back to the 80's, but if you get stuck let me know, then I'll look it up 🙂
Nice demo. The Gain enhancer feeds some of the output back into the amp input to try and simulate some of the acoustic reinforcement that you get when playing in front of a loud amp.
Thanks a lot ❤ Yeah, that sort of feedback is also what I expect it to be (also described that way in the manual) but there's some simulation going on it that too, cause if you just feed some audio back to the input, it's not going to sound and react like this. It's really a clever circiut the've created here 🙂
Hello, I came across your channel by chance, I often find this information better than the commercial videos. Why did you choose the FM9? And not one of the usual suspects like Helix, Kemper, QC? Greetings from Germany ;)
Well, I've actually had a Helix (as i mention in the video) for some years, and also liked it. But it wasn't as "lively" as my analog setup. Then when I got the Tsakalis Mothership, I discovered that it reacted way more like my analog setup. I've also got a TonexOne, but that one, like the Helix doesn't have as good response. This is probably something that others dont have the same need for, e.g. if you're playing with a lot of gain, it doesn't really have that great an impact. And then when I got the Fractal VP4 I discovered that it had the same response as the Tsakalis Mothership. And so has the FM9 🙂
I'm fairly new to the FM9 world. I've found the Austin Buddy presets to be significantly better than the factory presets, worth every penny. Plus, the presets are very educational. Rosh Roslin on YT and Cooper Carter are fantastic resources.
Great tones, congrats!
@@xGildxx thanks a lot. With this device it’s pretty easy to achieve that 🙂
Hi, can you share this preset?
Oh yes, I'll also add a link in the comments. You can find it here 🙂 forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/fm9-first-impression.210799/
Great playing! Could you make a video showing how to setup the fm9 and boss rc 600 . I have the exact same setup but not sure how to set it up!! Cheers!
Yes, I'll definetely do that then 🙂 Right now they're just 2 separate devices, but I plan to add some midi integration too.
@olzzonscorner ya I'm not really concerned on using the midi just want to be able to do basically what you are doing. I want to play my fm9 and be able to loop with my rc!! Look forward to seeing the video!!
great video as always. thank you for your effort
Thanks you so much, your support means a lot to me 🙂
Getting some great tones there! I’ve been using my non-Turbo FM9 for a few years. I wish I was as good at creating tones as you. Great stuff! Love that pink Silver Sky as well!
Thanks a lot 🙂 If you wan't to take a look you can grab the preset here 🙂 forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/fm9-first-impression.210799/
How does the compressor of the vp4 compare to the bloom? And the overdrives to your overdrive pedal?
Well, I only tried them once, and they sounded great and touch responsive. But I do prefer to have a simple path and preamp based overdrive/dist, so I haven't dived deeper into those. And the Tsakalis Mothership sounds so great, and so does the Jackson Audio Bloom, so I haven't got the need for it. The VP4 is mainly bought for their (also) fantastic stereo FXs and be aware that if you use the 4-Cable Method those will only be mono, mainly because all the I/O's are used for that. (and thus limited to mono in the software)
Wonderful composition. Those 11-minutes flew by. Will be re-listening time and time again.
Wow, thank you so much, I'm glad you're enjoying it ❤️
Wow, the Mothership sounds killer!! This suits my needs, going too purchase this!!!
Thanks. And yes, i can really recommend it, it's something special. And remember to try directly into it from you guitar. The it feels exactly like playing into a great amp ❤️
@@olzzonscorner Excellent, Thanks!
BTW Love your content, keep 'em coming!
I will, thank you so much 🙂
WOW! What a sound 🤟
Thanks a lot ❤️ That reverb combined with the Tsakalis Mothership almost plays itself 🙂
@olzzonscorner Nice 👌
Btw. Remember to check out the different cabs in their editor. My prefered is 412 Celestion "Eddie" for clean and crunch And then I use the 112 Backen EV for lead, it's more middle range, a bit like putting a TS808 in front of a distorted channel ❤️
@olzzonscorner Nice 1, I'll keep that in mind when I get it! Thanks
What specific reverb did you use? Just received my vp4 yesterday:)
Hope you'll be just as happy for yours as I am for mine 🙂 I used the Huge, York Minster with a stereo delay in front for the intro, and then a hall for the other stuff.
@@olzzonscorner Thank you!
Nicely done.
Thanks a lot ❤️
reminds me Hans Zimmer - Thunderbird Thelma and Louis OST guitar solo
Didn't know that recording, wow what a beautiful tune. Thanks a lot 🙂 ❤️
@@olzzonscorner did u hook it up 4cm with vp4 ? nice tone
@@sihoon48 thanks a lot 🙂 no I prefer to run directly into the Tsakalis Mothership (the Jackson Audio Bloom is set to relay-bypass) cause it gives the best dynamic. Beside that, the VP4 only runs in mono when in 4-cable methode, and those reverbs are so good that it would be a pity to run them in mono.
What is that little white box on your guitar? Lovely tone btw
That's a Wireless controller, that I'm working on. The "brain" is sitting on the board, and are controlling the Bloom, the Tsakalis and the VP4 via Bluetooth Midi 🙂
Awesome!! ❤️❤️❤️💥💥
Thank you so much, the Mothership really makes playing easier, the feel from it is fanstatic 🙂 And it made me stop using modellers, cause no one of them can get near it ❤
Now that's a great little device you built there. Nice ! Really functional and no nonsense.... Greetings from Germany....
Thank you do much 🙂
How do you like this combo? I had a Friedman IR-X & HX Effects pedalboard but it felt like something wasnt just right.
Yes I really love it, especially the touch, for me it's like playing a real amp, and together with the Bloom and the VP4 I really can get the sound that I wan't. Haven't tried the Friedman IR models, they are probably a bit more "tight" than the Mothership, which might be prefer by others. :)
I just got this pedal to build my DI recording and gigging rig around. I bought it for searing lead tones but was very pleasantly surprised at the clean tones I could get out of it.
Yeah, and then it has this feel to it, can't explain it just feels more like a real amp, than what I've tried of modellers. Btw. I ended up using that ElectroVoice speaker ir that in the editor. It's great :)
Hello, I'm torn between the Friedman IR-D and the Mothership. Unfortunately, due to the situation in my country and surroundings, I can't try either of them in person and have to rely on other people's experiences. So far, I prefer the tone of the Friedman IR-D, but I'm curious if the Mothership really has such low latency that it feels better to play compared to the IR-D. What do you think?
I haven't tried the Friedman IR-D, so can't compare. But I can for sure say that the Tsakalis Mothership is the best preamp/cab sim I've tried. :)
I haven't owned the Mothership, but I own their preamp that I believe the Mothership is based on. I also owned one of the Friedmans. If you prefer the tone of Friedman amps, then you can't go wrong with the IR-D. It is impressive that they were able to stay competitive on pricing while still capturing the tone of their amps. On the other hand, I found the Tsakalis preamp (Gravity Spot or G Spot), to be more tonally versatile and generally more to my liking. Of course, I have to run it through other power amp and cab (or sim). I may take a dive on the Mothership sooner or later and see how I like the power amp and cab sims...
@@HowlinTubes have tested quite a bit, and I think that the "Power Amp" step in the Mothership is a big part of it's response. But as I haven't tried the others I can't say for sure 🙂
You sound amazing! The pedal is great too
Thank you so much, that means a lot to me ❤️
Oh wow, I never thought of this, thanks for shining the light! As far as I got it, the amp + cab is a classic and characterful setup which gives you a wide pallet of tones. And that is the actual downside, since the tone changes dramatically depending on the position of the listener. The PA system with a cab simulator virtually fixes the position for the listener (being the microphone), so the position of the actual listener in the room doesn't change the character of the sound.
Yeah, when recording you really can find some sweet spots using a real amp, but also some terrible :) So depending on speaker sim the tradeoff can be more or less
Outstanding
Thank you so much, it means a lot to me 🙂
Great playing man! I hardly encouter other guitarist that have a soft touch yet so much feeling in it. And you use some very rhythmic and funky riffs and notes. Its like I see myself 20 years from now☺️ Keep it up and enjoy it❤️
Wow, thank you so much. That's some of the finest words I've ever got about my guitar playing ❤️
Sweet tones and soulful playing, well done!
@@adamdoran235 thanks a lot 🙂
Hey, sweet playing and great tones! That MIDI controller caught my eye, looks like you can switch presets on both pedals. What is it, what's your setup? Cheers!
Thanks a lot. Yes it’s something I’ve been working on for some time. And if everything goes well, I’ll present it here on the channel within the next couple of months 🙂
My honestly opinion is you are playing like Eric Clapton
Thanks a lot 🙂 Sure i can't reach him, he's definitely one of the greatest 🙂
Nice playing! You ended up in my feed and I was the first one here - where from in the world? Beautiful PRS - I have a Santana model in Trampas Green. Again, nice loop - nice playing! Ahhh editing a bit here - I see you are from Denmark. I have taken lessons with Jacob Quistgaard aka Quist who is also from there. Still following him and playing to his tracks. Enjoy!
Thats a lot 🙂 Yeah, the last year the PRS has become my main guitar. For many years it has been a Hansen, but I just fell in love with this PRS. I like doing the unedited live jams, as i feel the music becomes more honest, all the small mistakes that will be a part of it. Didn't know Quist, will check him out 🙂
@@olzzonscorner Yes wonderful idea playing unedited - I came back for another listen - so nice!
