Food channel from Hawai‘i
In the islands the word for food is ‘ai. Plural it's ‘āina, the word for land. So the land is the food, ALL the food. What distinction is there between life and food and the world? Food is the word, and the living food is the world itself.
Pele, akua of volcanoes, is "ka wahine ‘ai honua"-- the earth-eating woman. She is the mouth that swallows and speaks, both devours the land and births it. Our bodies, too, living on the larger body that is the island, are consumed in the endless process to create new bodies.
And so... the world is eating itself, nourishing itself with itself. ‘Ohana, meaning family, comes from ‘oha, the young shoots of the kalo plant-- the staple of Hawai‘i. When you harvest the body of the plant, its shoots grow into the next mother. Likewise our human families and their genealogies.
New Videos. Weekends. From Hawai‘i island, we will eat… and be eaten.

awsome...
Mine is sooty mold but I'm wondering if something else is affecting her because she's loosing her bark and limbs are naked🫣🥺 she produced fruit but she's struggling...any suggestions of what could cause the bark loss and decline
Could be a soil disease or insect like bark beetles. Also worth checking into citrus cankers
How do we make wood chips for the compost? And what’s the ratio of the wood chips, coffee ground and cow dung?
You will need a wood chipper. I am going to make a video all about this compost soon. Stay tuned!
Wrong wood to use, better with a type of fruit like waiwi - strawberry guava. Keawe burns too hot, you want smoke at lower heat!
I looked up volcanic soils... Found that even Boron could get tied up, unavailable at times. Normally Boron is available in most low ph situations. Low ph locks up many nutrients like this video says. 👍👍🏝 Low ph in these soils can also cause aluminum toxicity if the soil is loaded with it.
You did not speak at all about how to deal with the aphids? Please advise. Thank you!
Neem oil is a good way to treat aphids, also insecticidal soap
Sir what store is this?
Foodland on the Big Island
Subbed because this makes more sense than the rest. Mahalos! My soil fizzes when wet... With baking soda. Low PH.
Mahalo for the sub!
Please do spicy crab poke! It will bring me back to my childhood.
I like that idea!
1:17 That is my tree condition.. What fixed that?
Iʻm not sure what youʻre seeing at 1:17. The purple is new growth on a Kaffir Lime.
Ok.. Tanks! Purple new leaves and curly finger fruit, like the Buddha Hands.. But, a 5 gallon regular lemon, just planted. I guess Citrus Bud Mites... In Kula Maui. 3700 ft. Got some regular summer rains, this year. Lots of the citrus trees had the irregular Yellow leaves. - Fast acting pelletized lime helped noticeably in under two weeks. Watered in heavily. Huge Mahalos! These older folks had no clue. Trees looked horrible for decades. Surprised they still put out some fruit. Low ph volcanic ash soils.
Can you spray your tree once the fruit has started growing?
Yes

Dude… you gloss over the most important ingredient with no effort and you leave us completely confused. You need to redo this part of the video. You need to describe in detail what product is dishwashing detergent that’s not done and you give some obscure name and show a bar of soap.
Any dishwashing detergent will do
Dr bronners soap Castille soap
I agree the dish soap was passed over lightly and it is very important. Why not use Dawn?
@@jeannesmith824 Dawn would work fine. Any dish soap at all, itʻs just about cutting through the mold.
It's widely known as breadfruit throughout the Caribbean. You can make oiled down, steamed breadfruit with coconut milk ,or fries. You can also roast it when half ripe and off course make a pie. All delicious ❤
Sounds great!
It is grown in my backyard, we call it niphanas. I live in southern India
Interesting. Thanks for commenting. We have it in our yard too :)

Hi there can you use neem oil too
Not sure about neem ...
how much soda mixer with one liter water?
Recipe is pretty basic. You can make adjustments and take it in different directions. That’s the fun thing about it. You can add pineapple juice, guava pulp, beer, mango teriyaki marinade instead of shoyu, etc. You can make it savory by keeping the shoyu to sugar ratio at 1:1 or you can make sweeter by making closer to 1:2.. Some people also fry it with guava jelly and onion instead of the oyster sauce.
Right on, mahalo for commenting
Why oil and not water?
Helps stick to leaf better
I wonder which one makes the one for McDonald’s! Can someone find out😂
It's called Sweet Hawaiian Style Portuguese Sausage. Made by Pacific Sausage Co. Can buy em at Sam's Club or order em in bulk from the company like McDonalds lol
Maybe I should make an ‘ipu tip jar for busking?
that would be cool
Remember to subscribe for the full canoe plants playlist and comment below:
How do you know it is dead . Do you spray it after it is dead to remove it
Try rubbing the soot off with your fingers. If the leaf is brown or black underneath then it is dead. At that point just prune the leaf off.
Can you make a video on canoe plants ( atleast staples). I would love to know Hawaiian food before European contact. Great video
Thank you, appreciate it! Yes, I will continue this series. Ipu (not food, but a gourd) and ‘Ulu (breadfruit, food staple) coming next.

I'm a ma`kuli Hawaiian (74) when we made Huli, huli in the 50s, 60,and 70's. There was No such thing as Huli Huli sauce back then. Every place you saw chicken turning in a pit was rubbed a few minutes before it was put on the fire. Carnivals or Luau's wherever. Then, one day, somebody made a sauce using teriyaki sauce as a base, called the Huli Huli, and trademarked the Huli Huli name. All of a sudden you couldn't use the words Huli, Huli because of the trademark. That was like greeting somebody with a lei and saying Aloha. Then trademarking the word Aloha. and saying You created the word Aloha and no one else can use it! Like Somebody in the mainland trademarking "POKE". Most Hawaiians recognize Huli Huli as a chicken seasoned with a rub and then put on the rotisserie. Rub recipes are passed down from generation to generation within the families.
Mahalo for sharing the info, Uncle. Would you say there are any specific ingredients in the rub that are essential to the flavor? Or just the Kiawe smoke plus whatever you like in the rub?
Please teach me how to make huli huli chicken what kind of rub do you use
All the vids i see nowadays always say put pineapple and ketchup and i already know thats wrong and the mainland version
@@lucidgaming542 after so much time looking for the "real" recipe I think the only must haves are kiawe smoke and rotisseries style. Some say dry rub is the authentic way but the best I have had is wet brine. The marinade with shoyu-pineapple or whatever is newer/extra but does taste great. From what iʻve tried with the spices donʻt matter much compared to the kiawe smoke flavor
Thanks eabeH. I sprayed just now on my naartjie, lime and lemon.
Awesome!
Frank's hot is #1. Purity doesn't make a hotter version. Most convenient stores sell Purity hot dogs but Frank's are far better.

How do you choose a porous rock? What do you look for
Stones with little holes in them. Best to get from river.
My Uncle Mark grew up in San Francisco and he turned me on to the Lee Hing movie. I just visited there and bought a big bag of them so good.
Right on thanks for watching!
Chinese rose beetles are responsible for all the mottled holes on the leaves. Huge pest here in Hawaii gardens. I may devote a video to that issue.
E.B. Stone makes a Sulfer, Potassium, Magnesium product. It's pre-mixed. Since my citrus (lemon, lime and orange) trees are small but in raised, open bottom beds. I use this stuff reggularly. Any time I see some yellowing of the leaves I spread this stuff in the top 1-2 inches of dirt. Seems to do the trick. Thanks for posting this. Maybe I'll start using my wood ashes instead.
Thanks for your comment and the info.
That's a long time to smoke your meat. Mines takes 3 1/2 hours maybe 4. Once the 2nd sweat starts it's done I take em out. I run heavy smoke for an hour. Than heat till pau
Mahalo for your comment. Sometimes I go shorter too and just finish cooking the meat through later in the pan.
Pono!
