Alcohol wash your bees, or the other option? Screen bottom boards on a percentage of your hives!
Do you need a screen bottom board on every hive?
Heck no, just know that you are monitoring a percentage of your hives.
Personally I monitor 10% to 50% of each bee yard. (When I have multiple bee yards) The hives closest to my honey house get the 50% screen bottom boards. I corrolate the hives being monitored to the rest of the yard.
One test inaccurately tells you if you should treat your hives.(mite wash)
The other test tells you how effective your treatment was.(screen bottom boards)
When it comes time to figure out if your bees need treated. What is the standard for not treating your bees? 90% of your mites you can't monitor.
Are they saying a 3 percent infestation of pheretic mites is enough to treat but 2 percent is not?
Are they saying an alcohol wash test is even that accurate? If I take my first sample from frame #3 in the brood chamber then I take a 2nd sample from frame #5, will I get different numbers?
The current standards are not good enough yet to be considered accurate when we already know during the common times of year to treat our hives that 90% of the mites are going to be underneath the brood cappings.
And in all likelihood if you do get a very high mite count from a hive in the middle of honey season, it is because the queen has either cut back on laying, or maybe you have lost the queen. The theoretical mite bomb could also be a possibility but those are rare.
The high mite count is typically not because the mites started reproducing faster than the typical to the power of 5 every 21 days. We can always count on that. But it's because of one of the previous mentioned situations.

Oxalic acid vapor treatment and mite drops on screen bottom boards. August 22, 2024 Chapters added.
มุมมอง 8812 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
For the last few seasons I have always started doing my OAV treatments in September. This year I decided to start in late August. Typically I can always count on a mite drop on a bottom board of around 100 mites. Which makes sense that if 10 percent of mites are pheretic this time of year, you can almost always count on having 1000 mites under your brood cappings. Or in other words 90 percent o...

In all likelihood, the number of mites that fell onto these bottom boards were probably dead since the Winter Solstice treatment I performed the month prior. 12-21-22 And the reason they fell during this treatment was simply because of the bees getting agitated from this current treatment on 1-24-23 and either fell off of comb or possibly from some bees. That piece of plastic is a book of the hive. You can see which frame of brood emerges, what frame of food they opened, your treatment varroa kill, where is the cluster, do they collect pollen... all without opening the hive. People don't like them because they have to clean them and they last less than full bottoms. But if you could buy cheap plastic ones with the option to collect pollen like we can in Europe.. every back yard beekeeper would have them

The black flacks are wax moth larva poop. I wouldn't worry about it.. bees catch them when they grow bigger. That one looks like a wax moth larva bees thrown out. I can see a couple, 3,4 varroas on those boards. There could be 70% or more in the capped brood right now. They too have a cycle like bees and can enter 2-3 in one cell this time of year. But it doesn't look like you have a problem.

Thank you so much for the identification of the wax moth fesces. I truly was totally guessing. Same with the larvae. I'm kinda surprised about any moths being able to be in the hives at all. They are all so strong right now. But now you have me thinking the wax moths are kinda like the mites. You can always count on having them, just the bees are doing what they do with them too. Yea this way of treating the mites I do is I OAV them once a month in the fall, then when December hits I will treat them at least weekly until I get zero mites on a bottom board. Then I'm done with all treatments till next fall. My hives go near broodless around the winter solstice so it works out very well.

That's really good! Were your hives mostly broodless when you treated? I noticed a lot of my Russians totally shut down laying about the beginning of august - it was to the point I was seriously concerned about 5 or 6 of them thinking I had queen failure issues. But all but 1 recently started back up again & are back to laying up solid sheets. When they went broodless they also seemed to get really OCD about ridding any and all invaders from the hive - mites, beetles, etc.

I've been opening hives multiple times every week and haven't had a single incident. I did have a nuc getting robbed a couple weeks ago that I had to close down temporarily, but it was getting robbed by the neighbors italians 1/2 mile down the road when there were 20+ Russian hives 50 yards away that didn't bother it. Yes we use a lot of drones.. I'm on an island and in spring there's nobody else with bees. They all move their 50 hives trailer- boxes to better flows on land. So l have to keep a book of the two lines of bees that we keep and breed our own queens. Same as the queen line l have to keep track of the drone line.. l call it grandma genetic.. as the drones are the genetic lines of the old queens... I don't use plastic drone frames, just put and empty in early spring at position 2 or 8 and they end up being drone frames for the season. We have our drone congregation area souranded with hives that are used to keep the drone frames collected from our other hives. They have to be overfed with everything, never feel the lack of food. Than in July it gets to hot and dry and by then l'm done with it and those last drone frames end up in a solar melter and the queens caged for a brood break. By mid August varroa is gone and the hives have new queens and new bees will soon be there all healthy for the flow. This is a different place.. very warm. I get most of the honey after summer in the late fall flow. I'm writing to long.. and it's never enough. Growing up under a queen flying path.. or a congregation area. But it's not an area.. it's more a long narrow path that drones patrol whayting for a virgin to enter into. Never mind

Lonestar in my area of Maryland and Alpha Gal has also been right in my immediate area for years also and know several people with it currently. Seems like it affects people differently from gastro intestinal issues to anaphylaxis. I get bit by lonestar ticks several times of year and fear the dreaded red meat allergy very seriously.

No allergy yet scared to death everytime I pull off a lonestar that is stuck to me. From what I understand with Lyme it takes a prolonged exposure like overnight but with Alpha Gal I've heard it can transmit the virus after only like 15 mins. I spray down with permethrine when hunting but not while checking bees but that must change. I fear ticks more than snakes, poisonous spiders or other nasties in the wild.

Ticks, Mostly thanks to our Federal Government.🙄Thanks for staring your time and efforts, Informative video.👍 I had heard of the meat allergy disease, it's newer but been around for maybe 5 or 10 years. I have seen videos on it and a few news stories. I think most of the news stories was back in the Mid West some place. 😂I watch far to many videos to keep them all straight. I found a tick for the 1st time in 50+ years, I have never seen a Tick in my area tell this year. After looking up a picture the 1 I found on my dog was a deer tick, not a good tick but not near as bad as those Lonestar tick, YaY Texas.😂

I think bees only rob when they feel they need to, I'd bet that they have A LOT of food set aside. 🤔I'll bet they are Sitting Petty with Fall to Winter food stores🍯if that's the case Great Job Bees and Beekeeper.👍 We like it when our girls have plenty of food stored away.🍯🍯🍯😁 Ya Russians are not bad, mine were testy at times. I had the hardest time getting them to requeen and they could get worked up good, but I didn't have a problem with them. They seemed about like my Carni but a little More, they were always nice untell I made a mistake and then they would let me know Right Quick. They know how to defend their colonies well, they make good brawlers that's for sure. I found that my Russians tended to not eat as much and ran a little smaller brood chamber then my Italians did so they seemed to always have more food in the box, I figured that was a good thing. Thanks for sharing, have a great weekend. Blessed Days.

I haven't had success requeening. But if it does take, do you know if the drone cells continue to develop in the worker comb? Does it destroy it? Some folks say if a queen takes, the nest will remove all that drone brood

If your into drone comb, I always use 2 for each 10 frame deep. But the reason I use it is mainly as a mite magnet. Otherwise just use drawn comb. Your queen will start laying like she just started a new nest immediately.

    • @strutt01
      @strutt01 หลายเดือนก่อน

There is still her pheromones going up there, but they are not as strong now. Remember that Queen Mandibular Pheromones are transferred with the bees antennae. And normally the nurse bees are all around the queen. So when they are in the same box as the queen, the pheromones are that much stronger. Then the same interaction happens to the Queen. Since she is always completely surrounded by nurse bees and open brood, once all that moves 2 chambers up, it just really weakened the amount of pheromone shes use to having. Like smelling bacon cooking when you first wake up, then when you walk in the kitchen! 😁😁😁
