Taking a beginner Flamenco dance class for the first time felt like someone dropped me into the ocean and said, "swim to shore." I do like this 4 pronged approach and I agree, it will take time to reach a critical mass. Ok...I'm a guitarist, and I've played flamenco solo, and with dance and singing for 30 years. What it is, is this: if you listen to Solea, Solea Por Bulerias or Alegrias from the early 20th century, you will hear that the guitars are clearly playing melodies that most of the time are straight 3/4 beginning on 1 of the cycle. If you speed this up with dancers, you will start to hear the 12 as the strong beat and it becomes a different rhythm. This is why the escobilla is a 3/4 melody, but one that begins on the 1 of the 12 beat cycle. Poor dancers will always get this wrong. Nowdays, guitarists will play falsetas of both types - those that begin on 1, and those that begin on 12. Tomatito's "La Ardilla" has a good example at 1.12. If you take away the compass it is a simple melody in 3/4. Then it goes straight back to the 12 beat compass. They are like 2 different parallel rhythms. You must learn and be comfortable with both.

And I reached the same conclusion as you: 2 parallel rhythms to master and use simultaneously. Gracias!

Dancers’ bias - thinking about how we were drilled on traveling marcajes starting on 12 and with the accents being evenly weighted…To do the step it makes sense to start on 12. As you have taught - when you make a mental shift to 12 being a softer “pick up” and “grabbing the 3 count” as a stronger accent or tension point, its a simple/powerful way to make the marcaje musically nuanced and also more expressive. Seeing all those clips in the video really helps too.. 🙏

A lot of this video (Paso de Subida) starts on 12. According to the "Fewer rhythms, More understanding" video, that's like the guajira compás: th-cam.com/video/CU6viq88FqQ/w-d-xo.html
Yes, the paso de subida usually starts on 12 simply because there is no accent on 1. So a paso de subida is the same in guajira type, soleá type or even por bulería. this is actually the topic of my upcoming video!!! 😉
In the discussion of 12-beat compáses at 13:55, we could imagine a pattern starting on 6. It's three yellow followed by two pink (like siguiríya), but with the accent at the start of the lego block instead of the end. Alternatively, it's guajira starting with yellow instead of pink. Is that pattern ever used in flamenco ?
I don’t think the pattern you’re describing corresponds to any specific compás type. It could resemble a very fast version of siguiriya, where the tempo creates a shift towards a 1234-5 feel. Alternatively, it might resemble an inverted bulería pattern, but it would only be the result from combining two medio compases (a yellow one and a pink one) and would not work as a recurring pattern. I hope it makes sense 😅

The music in the background is just compás tracks from musical projects of mines. About the sources, let me know which palo you want to dive in. There are also “universal” sources like La Niña de los Peines. But it’s better to consider it depending on the palo.

Guillermo, at last I found someone who agrees with me! I was lucky when I started flamenco 20 years ago with the Sevillanas, which I always felt as a shifting triple-duple beat, but my teacher insisted that it was in 3/4. The experience convinced me very early on that the Sevillanas and the Fandango de Huelva were polyrhythmic, an attitude that I carried on into the 12-beat compases. One interesting thing about the Sevillanas: Because of the polyrhythmic structure, sometimes the strong beats coincide, and sometimes they happen one after the other. Where they happen one after the other is where the rasgueado occurs, almost as if the guitar tries to "smear" the two successive strong beats together. I don't know if you'll agree with me about this. In any case it's a relief to finally get some validation, especially from an expert like you!
