Betasoft - early CPC demo
One of the first "demos" I have written for the Amstrad CPC back in 1986. Not very fancy, but at least some rasters and even a crude way of hardware scrolling (using CRTC register 2). Yes, there was no music or even sound effects.

This is a cover of a ZX Spectrum Soundtracker song which in turn was a cover of Star Tracks by Rygar (th-cam.com/video/15LsV-JCr0k/w-d-xo.html). I made it in faststracker 2, using a couple of (super tiny) samples borrowed from another Amiga mod. I visualized the track using corrscope.

    Correct me if I am wrong, but is this running in 640 by 200 mode? Seems very high detail so I am impressed that you got so many colours visible on what would normally be a 1bit colour depth (former C64 coder here with honest respect for CPCs).

    • @ollerich32
      @ollerich32 ปีที่แล้ว

      The actual mode used here is Mode 1 which has a resolution of 320x200 pixels and can display 4 colours (out of 27) at once. This here is a mode 1 screen reduced in width - 256 pixels I guess. All the additional colours you see are due to rasters. A common effect on most 8-bit machines :)

    • @josyfkristopher4320
      @josyfkristopher4320 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ollerich32 Ah, yes - I forget that the Motorola 6845 and the custom ASIC were rather flexible. I recall ZZKJ releasing a hack that allowed 160x200 with 8 colours to reduce RAM usage (and this CPU time)? Compared to the C64, the CPC certainly had a more vibrant palette (my principle point of envy). The C64 used a good effect called AFLI where you were limited to two colours every 8 pixel wide cell but you could select different colour RAM every scanline to keep changing the palette. It chewed up both 17KB of RAM and nearly 80% of the raster time on PAL systems but made for cool high resolution full palette displays.

    • @ollerich32

    A very impressive demo. I really like the colours used in it. As Zarchos says below, it would be good to upload of pouet.net. I would zip the app first on the A3010 to ensure it maintains all it's filetype information, then copy the zip file to a dos formatted disc which can be uploaded onto an old pc with a floppy drive. Or perhaps copy the file over serial port (if the A3010 has a serial port - as I can't remember).

But I would very much prefer something network-based. The A3010 does have a serial port, maybe that's the way to go. I am still exploring what add-ons have been created recently(ish)..
