Smith's Ridge
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 มี.ค. 2023
Smith's Ridge is a 12-acre homestead in Highfill, Arkansas. We believe that a life well spent isn't comprised of a filled calendar and heavily curated feed but rather the simpler things in life. There is true beauty to be found when you choose to nestle up with nature and experience all of God's creation. On this channel, we'll feature homeschooling, homesteading, and a little bit of business content. Our hope is to inspire others to choose an intentional way of life.
What supplies do you need for a family milk cow? | Daily Care Supplies for Dairy Cow
If you're preparing to welcome a family milk cow or in the research phase, you'll want to have the proper supplies on hand for the daily care of your animals. I'll be recording a separate video of what to keep on hand for first aid as well as calving because those items are very important, too! Be sure to subscribe to my channel to catch those videos.
Feeding
- Consider where you'll purchase hay
- What (if any) feed you'll be feeding and how you'll get it
- Get a quality loose mineral and salt
Milking
- Here’s a link to the Hantop milk machine! amzn.to/3ZhcVTJ
- It’s good to have a CMT test on hand! amzn.to/477GDfK and you’ll need a paddle amzn.to/3XgOQe0
- The Dr. Naylor’s indicators seem great and easy too but I have not used it. amzn.to/3ZFmMSO
- Uddermint (I don’t use these much on her but it’s esp great to have after calving): amzn.to/3WYlX4X
- Pre/ post iodine teat dip: amzn.to/3T0EbBC
- Teat dip cup: amzn.to/4dX9vcF
- Or you might choose to use a spray bottle instead! amzn.to/3ZKfUnr
- If you plan to hand milk you will want a quality stainless steel bucket! I highly recommend having a lid to reduce sloshing and reduce flies and dirt particles when hand milking. amzn.to/4g1Ix5f or amzn.to/4fa6WEl
- Rags or towels for wiping the udder after spraying with iodine: amzn.to/49tQWvu
- Fight bac: amzn.to/4gjvaNe
When choosing your bucket or machine, be sure to consider how much milk your cow is expected to give!
Brushes & Grooming
- Curry comb: amzn.to/4grZPZ3
- I also love the Sleek EZ! I finally wore mine out after 3 years of use but I love having this during shedding season! amzn.to/3ZtyVJc
- Udder brush (can use water and soap but I have tried various combos and really like the brush. I think the cows like it too. You’ll find what works for you!): amzn.to/3T1ijGt
- Brush: amzn.to/4f8MJ1R - I have had great luck with any Weaver grooming or general care products! I love the mint green but here is the ones I have currently: amzn.to/3CXxFXd
- Hairbrush for tails! amzn.to/3OL5Y6L It doesn’t need to be fancy, just something to get them nice and clean.
General Care
- The best for fly treatment: amzn.to/3ACcTLT
- Electrolytes: I put them into water in extreme heat or cold or other stressors. This stuff is great! My animals love it: amzn.to/3Z1S2eT
- Cow halter: the ones with the metal piece are a must! Don’t skimp and get the rope-only ones without the slip hole. Also don’t get the buckle ones. You want a quick-release option for the safety of your animal! amzn.to/4g1Wqk3
Milk filtering
- Filters: amzn.to/3T3nXYq
- A good canning funnel: amzn.to/472OzP5
- Ladle: amzn.to/3WYhrDC
- Lots of half-gallon jars (azure standard, etc) wide-mouthed so that you can ladle your cream amzn.to/49yYBJ9
- Stickers for labeling: amzn.to/4gp50J7

I recorded this video in April but I've been a little busy farming to get it edited! Our place has grown so much this year. We've gone from 6 hens and 16 pullets to 45 and from 1 family dairy cow to a microdairy with 3 in milk, 3 bred heifers, a young heifer, and 2 steers that we are raising for meat. With limited acreage, we have to get creative with how to take a regenerative approach but it'...

We ended up also having to bring him into the house to get him w...

Not to mention, she was shedding out really terribly so I wanted to get her dewormed. ...

Hello broter
Am I understanding this right… you’re not feeding hay “free choice” but just giving them rations? I’d love to hear more about this…
Could you share the link to what you pour over your girl’s feed to prevent milk fever?
I can totally relate to not getting cows bred back “on time” haha. AND I also DESPISE the teat dip cups!! Ha! This was so fun to see!!! Congrats!!!

Thanks for showing us what a micro dairy is like. Much different from the large scale operations but more like how farming used to be when everyone was self sufficient.
Yes! I really love pursuing “the way things used to be!” My grandparents milked from the 70s till 2022. I learned a lot from their commercial operation but the industrialization of farming really encouraged me to think differently.
Fascinating to see your small operation, I grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin with a 30 cow herd, at that time we were on the small side for our area, quite the contrast, lol. Originally my dad used a milking bucket that was held up by a strap that went over the cows back. After a few years he remodeled the barn and installed a pipeline.
How awesome! I just bought a couple of Ayrshires from WI! I’ll do a video this week sharing that story 😅 It really is different! Im familiar with the surfer bucket milkers. 🤩 I really love pursuing “the way things used to be!” My grandparents milked from the 70s till 2022. ARE YOU HIRING
Well, Mrs. Smith, you are simply full of good information! I don’t plan on getting any cows but I’ve always heard that since cows are ‘herd’ animals, that they don’t like being alone. What’s your opinion on that?
Thank you! I would agree! When I only had one cow, I kept her with a mini donkey. They do need company. I believe that if a person is around a lot then the cows can find company in their human companions - I know of people who only have one cow and it’s successful but I think they are happier and better off with a companion. There are also benefits of the herd such as watching over each other during calving and getting good stimulation and interaction.
Good advice. Thanks.
Loved that you filmed the birth hopfully you will do more if you can my favorite thing on utube is watching animal births!
I hope so! It's so incredible! My mama cows usually give birth at night and I get to the barn with a new baby haha! That is a good thing because it means they didn't have any trouble but I definitely enjoy getting to be there.
Nice video. They'll be more irritating at first, but try feeding the cats when you are finished, at an area away from that barn. I agree premilking routines do help cows let down because they are very much creatures of habit. Milking can be slow or quick depending on the routine we give them. Sounds like your cow is getting a nice new home. Glad for you both!
Thank you! I have actually started doing that! They have been annoyed but I give them a little milk treat in the barn when I’m all finished instead of near the stanchion. We’ll see if it helps! 😅 She’s doing well in her new home! I have another one in milk now too. Thanks for stopping by my channel!
Hello Mrs.Smith, good job. Greetings from the Czech Republic. I just started with two heifers to microdairy too. So I'm looking for inspiration for a milking stanchion and so on..
Congrats on your new endeavor! It’s a wonderful journey! I hope you’ll find some inspo from my channel!

I watched the birth on your short this morning so I skipped it on this one and went to the cool part where mom is licking her baby.😎Very interesting, Mrs. Smith. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

Ms Smith can you make a cow birthing video p
I will try! I have one due any day but my gals tend to birth at night. I do plan to get a video camera in the barn for that reason though! Do you have specific questions?
@@smithsridgejust sleep in the barn
Here's an idea just put a body camera on and videotape your day
Fun idea! I may do that when milking a fresh heifer. Thanks for the comment!
Great video
Thanks so much!
your camera is dusty
Hehe that happens in a dirt floor barn 🥰 thanks for dropping a comment!
what a wonder u are good on u from durham uk which county u in?
Arkansas in the United States
Your cows seem to stand good. I have a jersey. She is 4 maybe 5 now. I have to chain her feet. She will kick.
She sounds sassy!! I’ve been fortunate. I do have a bit of a routine for training mine and it seems to work well. But I’ll admit that if they kick, I take a prop to their leg and swat them back! I’m not saying it’s the right thing to do but it works for me. They don’t seem to test it after I let them them know who’s in charge!
Good information , Mrs. Smith. Looks like your business is growing. Those cats were driving me crazy when you were milking but didn’t seem to borrow you at all. 😎
Thanks for the comment! Oh they get on my last nerve! I try to ignore them. Giving them milk from the cows was a terrible life decision! 😅
@ bother, not borrow!
I have this machine and I’m new at it. How do you reduce the suction when it’s time to detach? And the how do you reattach quickly for the second set of teats? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Naw - the horse wouldn't have kicked her there - have the dairy cow out with the horses a lot - they don't fret so much - but if she's after having it twice, then be careful - depending on her age - it might be now sub-clinical and will recur a fair amount - you might not like the antibiotics, but next time around it might be an idea to treat her as well as doing the milking out just to get it cleared out completely. There's then a product called Herbamass which is for mastitis and isn't antibiotic etc - and is meant to have decent results - it's a drench given orally - not sure if you can get that there - it's worth having a few in date ones just to use at that early stage or at birth. Sod knows how it works in humans - but good luck with the cow - they are, likely easier - and you can get dip strips to check for the milk - they are great easy ways to check on the process. Sure it can be done and Jersey's are a bit prone to it - might be worth breeding out a couple of calves to something else to just go through and keep her healthy on there too :) Lovely to see your farm there :)
You’ve got some good workers there.
You are one busy lady. I gave up on being organized years ago.😅Every time I make out a list I forget where I put it. Cheers to you.
Hi! I messaged you on Facebook about needing milk! My boyfriend went to school with you and suggested I reach out!
You are a believer in raw milk ha
Raw milk doesn't have the same shelf life as pasteurized milk, but one can still use it for other purposes if it sours. It is not harmful to use it.
Yes! Absolutely. It lasts 7-10 days but can last even longer if it's stored in a milk tank then into a container and left closed.
I think dad got the short end of the stick on that job!
Hahah!! He really did! The kids should have been under there but I was worried about a rooster flogging someone...
Thanks for the great information!
We had a jersey milk cow in 90s when all the kids were home. Now I have milk goats because my husband and I can’t drink enough milk to warrant a cow. I loved the way we could use the milk in the past for cheese and butter and sour cream, and all the things! I’m glad your heifer is doing well.
That's amazing! Simpler times. A dairy goat sounds like a wonderful solution. We now have 3 cows in milk and 4 heifers, 3 about to calve. Things escalated quickly haha! I've been too busy farming to record videos but I hope to get some new ones out soon!
Your baby is beautiful! Congratulations 🎊
That went very well. Yay 🎊 🎉 I happy for you.
I’m from bentonville unfortunately all they do in northwest Arkansas is tear down farmland and build apartments and subdivisions I moved down to Hartford Arkansas You can possibly sell your land since it’s worth way more up there and buy land 25 minutes south of fort smith and buy 80 acres just a thought
You're very right. We have looked at selling but aren't really ready. We love our place and are leasing some neighboring land now. I've got so much more going on now - I need to do a new tour. Thanks for dropping a comment.
