Beastmen Triple Ghorgon vs. Bretonnia Old World Battle Report
Ghorgons are too slow to be effective against big characters, right? Well what happens when you take three of them so you can cover the whole board?
Bryan tries this strategy with his Beastmen against Garret's Bretonnians. This game was played during our Bay Area South Bay summer league and uses 25% / 25% comp. Only 25% of your army can be "lord" choices, and 25% of your army can be "hero" choices.
Let us know what you think!

Good battle report, nice battle.
@@steveh.690 thanks!
Really cool battle report, thank you! You found a great balance between keeping it short and still giving insight into the relevant decisions. More of this please (especially if Beastmen are involved :D)!
@@TobiasPulver thank you! Definitely planning to do more, and we have a few beastmen players around
More details on how the Duke died please?😮
It was a standard Viletide cast + Hagtree Fetish, and the Great Bray-Shaman got in range to cast it because it had a Flying Carpet (Fly 8), and because the Beastmen got first turn so that the Bretonnians didn't have a chance to use their Falcon Horn of Fredemund. It was a deployment mistake from the Bretonnians to deploy close enough to allow this to happen on Turn 1. Viletide gives you 5d6 Strength 1 hits with no armor save. Hagtree Fetish allows you to re-roll wounds on magic missiles. So it's a bunch of dice fishing for 6s to wound, re-rolling failures. Once you get the wounds, the Duke only gets its 6+ ward save from the Blessing of the Lady.
@cameronblume5108 yes but how many wounds did they do? How many were saved? How do you stop or help prevent the Duke from being targeted by that spell too? Seems broken as haha
@punchyMiddleEarth it did exactly enough wounds to kill the Duke, so it was close. Not sure if he made any 6+ ward saves. To defend against this, first off don’t put your general in range for the shaman to lunge forward on turn 1. Viletide only has a 15” range, so it doesn’t usually threaten more distance than a cavalry charge. You could charge the unit of gors with fast cavalry to put the wizard in combat so it can’t cast. You could wipe out the Gors with a fireball so that the shaman can’t hide in them. You could put a wizard closer to the shaman so it’s harder to cast the spell (in this game there is no wizard in range to dispel). There are definitely counters
😊
Enjoyed this! The 25/25 split would definately solve some of the issues Old World has
Yeah we all thought it was a successful format, and running the comp convinced several of the more casual players to sign up without alienating any of the competitive players
So delighted to have stumbled on your reports. Very good work, excellent commentary. More orcs!
@@King-geekora thank you! I don’t do this full time or anything, but I’m trying to keep releasing a new one every few weeks

Cool batrep wich has a great lenght as video!
Thank you! I’m glad you liked it. More to come
Pretty sure the Duke has the Grail Vow which has immune to psychology and stubborn. I don't think he runs away much.
I like the restrictions.. Even better is the 6th Ed ones.. In my humble opinions of course. Cool game, cool armies.
Thanks! Yeah locally I think people have really liked this format, although when I posted it on Facebook there were definitely some haters 🤣
@@cameronblume5108 Don´t care about that.. I would say most people act like trash on the internet just becuase they can. I see it over and over and over.. Ignore the muppets and be glad for the nice ones. ;)
Nice vid. Its a shame you can't tweak the list. Shaman are arguably better than the Warbosses, and I do like the Troll Hag in the army too. I think River Trolls are the best Trolls to pick because the interaction of the extra wound and double regen makes them very resilient.
Thanks! Yeah after a few games there are many changes I would make to this list, but it's locked for one more round of league play. I don't own a Troll Hag yet but I'm hoping to pick one up in the next month or so. I think I'm also coming around to River Trolls being the best... that extra wound is just good in so many situations that it's better than the pip of armor and the magic resistance on the stone trolls. I have 10 river troll models printed up, so I could definitely include more.
@@cameronblume5108 hopefully they re-release the river troll models soon, they were a newer kit back during 8th and aged really well
Nice video. The league sounds interesting, not sure I love the character distinction since it clearly wasn't in GW's mind when they "balanced" the armies.
Yeah it’s something to test out in a 3 round summer league, we’ll see how it goes. I will say though that this format is bringing out different models from storage than we would see in the normal format
Appreciate the shorter batrep format, the two/three hour unedited ones on TH-cam are not for me. Just one small criticism: the word is ethereal (ee-thee-ree-al) not etheral. I know it's a small thing but it makes my eye twitch every time it's mispronounced in the video 😂.
So good news - I'm about to release another battle report which has the green knight, and in that video I put the emphasis on the second syllable. However just to clarify, are you saying that the first syllable should be a long e, like "ē" in phonetic pronunciation? Because I'm seeing "i" for the first syllable in pronunciation guides.
@@cameronblume5108 I'll look out for the new video! Thanks for indulging my pedantry 😂, normally it would be a tense high front unrounded vowel sound as in "see" and the in the noun "ether" that ethereal is the adjective of. The "i" that you're seeing in pronunciation guides is likely the international phonetic symbol for the sound I describe here.
@@EleshScorn ok bad news, I just did my final pass on the new video, and I mix and match all sorts of pronunciations of "ethereal". I'll try to be a bit more consistent going forward. I also found this youtube video with a series of real-life pronunciations in American English, and it does not quite sound like the first vowel in "ether": th-cam.com/video/f9mi_8nH_ak/w-d-xo.html
And the video is up! Hopefully your eye will be ok =) th-cam.com/video/KWikRzE5kYg/w-d-xo.html
When first time goblins give ground, they give ground diagonally, but I think you didn’t move them diagonally, you forgot or something else happened?:)
I re-watched it - they did give ground diagonally, and all of the ogre units followed up straight ahead. The way you can tell is that in the upper right corner of the goblins the gap between the sabretusks and gnoblars got smaller
That idol model looks great!
Thank you! It’s an Emang STL print that was upscaled as large as possible while still fitting on a 100mm x 150mm base and inside my printer 😂. I was trying to get something on the same scale as a Bonegrinder (since I don’t like the Bonegrinder model)
Really good batrep! I look forward to more!
@@bendaffurn8392 thank you! There will definitely be more
Great battle report.
Thank you!
That´s cool, beer!
Like your battle report, BUT the army list are behind a PAYWALL do you get a kickback? I call BS on that.
Ha, no I definitely don’t get a kickback. That was the official tournament site that hosted all the lists. Here I’ll go copy-paste them into the video description
Alright, I've gone in and pasted the army lists for all three of the BAO videos. That should be what you need! If you're not familiar with BCP, they offer their product free for all tournament participants, and the automation really makes things much easier if you're organizing a tournament. They charge the paywall for tournament organizers, and for people who want to comb through their global tournament results database and do analytics.
@@cameronblume5108 great. I used to help run the GW GT in Baltimore and used to seeing the lists.
@@RobertKappes You're not the first person to comment on the paywall =). For my most recent battle report that I just posted I started putting the lists in the description. This was the push I needed to go do it for the BAO videos too.
Is the beer deployed in open order or are they skirmishers ? Great BatRep!
They’re classified as behemoth, so typically closed order deployment. It’s nice to get the +1 combat res, but the stacking -2 sobriety debuff is a real tradeoff
Ahh I have missed this narration voice - Jukes
This might be my favorite format. Great work! What kind of camera/mount were you using?
A regular iPhone 15 held very tightly with two hands! And I plugged in a Corsair USB headset with a directional mic for audio (to filter out the very loud room)
Thank you I’m glad you like the format!
Love the format with shorter reports!
Thank you!
Great report!
Thank you!
Again, love the format and commentary!
Great format!
Thank you!
Trying to understand why that second block of men at arms near the damsel broke in combat. They’ve got stubborn from the Triptych and shield wall. He should be able to auto fall back in good order from stubborn and convert that to give ground via shield wall. Big mistake if he missed that.
Unfortunately I think this was just a playing mistake. He also forgot that his Duke had stubborn.
@@cameronblume5108 old world is such a young game still. Mistakes will happen for a while until everyone knows their army and the core rules by heart.
I dig it. If you can filter out the backround noise that would be amazing. :) Subbed
I’m using a headset with a directional mic, but it accidentally came unplugged once or twice. And it was LOUD at the tournament
@@cameronblume5108 No worries I still dig it. Audio is tough to control even in the best situations. Keep up the good work
Excellent format and particularly the focus on a competitive game which is very welcome. I do however think that, while the game itself was a great deal of fun, it also illustrates some of the really acute competitive issues OW has as a game when dialled up to the max- this one featuring three dragons. However, that's exactly the reason we need to see it being played out in the hands of players trying to win who know how to use them.
I feel like there was some well known figure (as seen on TV) threatening more competitive battle reports on their channel. Surely we are overdue the delights of a kaleidoscope of 80s chaotic fury?
12:00 Why have the blood knights turned to face that way? They just need to hit the skirmishers and then the skirmishers align to them. Not the other way around. Also they could have probably even then used drilled on the overrun to go wider on the left and hit the dragon princes or at least be in a better position to charge next turn since the dragon princes couldn't charge and also couldn't counter charge with the blood knights being so close.
Yeah i reviewed the rules and I think you’re correct. The skirmishers needed to align to them. We can give them some grace for being mentally tired in a high pressure game at the end of a long tournament =)
Awesome format! Love it! One question: How do you give the full plate armour to the arcimage? Thanks ❤
Ah, that is super confusing the way I presented that. The full plate is the natural dragon armor, not the mage … but the army list just listed “full plate” and I was kinda on autopilot during editing and used that confusing phrasing
Hey on 8:49 why silver helms are in that position? They got give ground and black knights should have the better unit strenght so they run directly away from them!🤔 Another question at 11:51 I don’t think you can redirect charge like that because reavers are in skirmish formation , so when they are charge they have “ close the door” to enemy units. It worked like that if they where in open order and not in skirmish formation, am I wrong?👍
I think you’re correct for the point on skirmish formation, fortunately that didn’t seem to make a huge difference to the game outcome. For the thing at 8:49 it was a fall back in good order rather than give ground, and very briefly in the clip you can see them moving away from the black knights so I think they did it correctly. What I think happened off camera is that they took their reform and faced the dragon, which is how they ended up sideways in the next clip
@@cameronblume5108 thx a lot, sorry but I’m trying to learn the rules better as I can, and your video are very helpful!!😀
Thanks glad to hear it!
Nice of this brian fellow to let you film the game, I'm sure he was very nervous playing on camera. I see he has Tabletop titan dice, he must be a fan.
❤
This is a brilliant battle report format, I really like it. 15mins highlights is just enough to know what happened without watching every single dice roll. Brilliant, keep it up.
Thanks, I’m really glad you like the format! Outside of a tournament setting I might go up to 20 minutes and add in a bit more breakdown of combat res and possibly live break test rolls on camera … but yeah, I like to keep it short 🙂
Can only second that. A full battle with overlays in 16 minutes is crazy good. Love the content as well.
Amazing game! It’s always a dragon!!:)
This is amazing! At 3:35 the sound really changes, to where we can no longer hear your commentary and we can hear the players. Not sure if that was intentional or not.
That was me not fully plugging in my headset, so instead of a directional microphone I got the (very loud) ambient noise in the room. I figured it was better to leave that in with the bad sound than skip the clip completely and have people be confused
Did the Vampire on Dragon declare a charge over his actual charge allowance?
I believe he was fine, because his base movement was buffed a total of 3” from Dance macabre and the mortis engine, which I think extends his maximum charge range
@@cameronblume5108 definitely something to watch out for when playing a VC Dragon.
This is a great video format, more please.
Thanks!
Question for you - I made another video (Bretonnia vs High Elves) in my channel where I had a little more time to film, and we included a few dice rolls, things like break tests and charge rolls. That extends the length to about 25 minutes. If you get a chance to watch that one, I’m curious if you think that makes the video better or worse. Is it more exciting to have a few rolls, or would you prefer to just make it super short like this and keep it 15 minutes
lol Double Dragons needs to be removed from the game 😳 *cringe*
Yeah I don’t think dragons in their current form are particularly fun to play against. But I think the most productive way to make change is to put them on the table at maximum power and document what it does to the game, which hopefully this video is helping to accomplish!
Good stuff man keep up the great work! I'm with you 💞 can't watch those 2 hour games which are everywhere, much prefer these shorter formats
Thanks! Much appreciated
One thing for the high elf general, loremaster is for on foot only so you cant be a loremaster on griffon e
Ah, thank you for that catch! Hopefully it didn’t affect our game very much. I think the Prince maybe cast one spell in the entire game? And the Sword of Hoeth probably helped him chop down the peasantry and the prophetess, but probably not too different from a different magic weapon he could have purchased with those points =)
Its amazing how many people ignore clearly defined rules like this 🤦
Guys a question, how duke killed 5 swardmasters? There were ethereal and duke have not magic attacks
Let me ask Ben and get back to you
Duke gets magical attacks built in from the grail vow
@@Sytheron1000 ah you are correct! Thanks for figuring that out.
I really enjoyed this. Both thrilling and engaging, great start with a quick explanation from the respective players on how their units were put together and what strategy they had in mind. Made it easier to follow as the turns progressed. The length is perfect, not too short or long. Please do more of these if you have the time and opportunity.
Wow thank you for all the praise! Is there anything you would change at all? Here is my current list of things to improve: - Learn how to spell “Bretonnia” correctly - Find a table with better lighting so the dice rolls are easier to read - Better graphic design for the opening thumbnail and screens between turns - Get a hand-held gyro mount for the camera to reduce shaking.
We've all done the same spelling error, no worries! Maybe add a designated dice pad/box I've seen quite few utilise that, makes the dice rolls easy to follow! I think the graphic inserts are fine, but maybe have them to be white, for more readability? Other than that I think it's fine! Your way of presenting and adding excitement depending on what's going on between the different units on the board is engaging and active, as a viewer I think it's a great success if a battle report can make me feel thrilled and excited over the outcome which yours delivered by a good margin. Cheers!
@@greenleader-vq2px Maybe a little one that I'd put on the table next to whatever is being rolled on? Let me look into that.
Sorry for the spelling errors! Looks like there are a few "Brettonia" spellings in there >_<
What did you guys use for your space debris? I like how theyre above the map! 🎉
I would have to ask Tony
According to Tony they’re just balanced on dice!
Great format for the video!
Thank you for giving great insights into your decision making and tactics.

@@cameronblume5108 I'm just getting into Dropfleet. Looks like you haven't played in a while. Although you might have just stopped making videos.
@@ethanmckinney203 our local group really disliked the 2nd edition of Dropzone commander where they took away full editorial control from Dave, and Dropfleet became a casualty of that too. Also covid. For the last couple of years I’ve been leading a classic world of Warcraft raiding guild, although now that the kids are getting older I might get back into miniatures again next year. Maybe Infinity?
@@cameronblume5108 Stargrave? Cheap, miniatures agnostic, campaign based. Folks at our FLGS are wrapping up a campaign today.
@cameronblume5108 In any case, I hope you make some videos for whatever you're playing. Your editing makes them tight and puts the length where it should be. Too many meandering live play videos out there.
Man I miss this game.
Yeah, good times! This was one of the best battle reports.
Cameron, are you going to come back to make more dropzone videos? It would be wonderful :)
Hey! Thanks for checking in. I haven’t been playing miniature games of any type since the pandemic started, which is a combination of trouble finding space to play + now having two small kids. For Dropzone, I was not a fan of the new changes that Lewis from TT inserted into the game. I thought the game was better when David had full creative control =/. Right now I’m leading a raiding guild in Classic World of Warcraft for entertainment, but I will get back into miniatures eventually =)
@@cameronblume5108 What were the Changes that you did not like?
@@starmechs Mostly infantry. In first edition, good infantry play was the thing that separated decent players from great players. It was a very subtle skill to know just how you could ride the line to get extra offense out of your infantry squads without exposing them to too much danger that would imperil using them to win the mission. Most new players in dropzone first edition played their infantry very conservatively, and it was only after a lot of practice that you could fully understand how to unlock infantry's potential as an offensive weapon. It felt like Lewis did not understand the infantry part of the game well at all (probably from a lack of experience), and he just threw out the entire infantry rule set instead. Of his changes, the movement changes which allowed infantry to enter central objective buildings on the first turn were a terrible change. The changes which converted CQB into a shooting match instead of a simultaneous separate phase were also terrible, and gave way too much advantage to the defender (and with the movement changes, the defender could simply be the person who went first, which was mostly luck). The changes to falling masonry also didn't make any conceptual sense, since it made buildings more structurally sound the more infantry were inside them (I pictured in my head maybe the infantry were holding up the ceiling or bracing the pillars?). Every one of these changes was a regression that made the game worse than first edition. Now as a caveat, I haven't been following 2nd edition since release. All of my friends quit right at release when we tried playing with these new rules. It's totally possible that these rule problems have been fixed with later updates. However, in the past I have absolutely hated playing miniature games where I lost faith in the abilities of the game designer, and I didn't want to subject my hobby life to the whims of the same person who had made all of these poor decisions in the first place. It seemed that Dave had been sidelined from designing his own game. That's why I stopped playing.
@@cameronblume5108 Okay, Possible we will get a edition 1 Campaign for Dropzone + Dropfleet? I love my Shaltari and I sadly don't see or find many BR were it is in the game. I assume cause the models are so fragile.
