The Biggest Problem with Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Frunk LED Strip Installs Solved with a Relay. ⚡️
Really excited to introduce this relatively simple product to you guys because it solved a significant pain point with frunk LED strips especially for users who have power frunks.

Thank you to the members of the tesla motors club as I first caught wind of using relays as a solution to this problem from the TMC thread below. Haven’t had a chance to test DIYing a version myself but adding a relay to a strip seems straightforward and very cost effective for those who don’t mind a little soldering.

Good luck finding accessories that are made anywhere else?
Very well done. Saw another parts video but I litterally had to stop mid way just because the guy was so arrogant and full of himself. You presented everything logically and completely. Thank you.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a nice comment.
wow~ Aliexpress Tesla model y Acc good!!!!!
Rear controle multi function display - we use all Apple products…any issues with comparability or integration with IPads, IPhones, etc. Is there an Apple IOS product in the market?
There’s no issue with compatibility but there is no iOS product. Apple ties all of its software to its hardware (closed source) so you won’t see any iOS devices that aren’t manufactured and sold by Apple themselves.
@@VanillaTesla ok thanks!
I’d like to see the doors shut themselves. I bet it’s coming…🌿🐇
There are kits for that however they also swing themselves open which is a little unnerving as there are no sensors to stop collision. The more practical kits are “soft close” kits that simply latch the door shut if you’ve soft closed the door but it hasn’t latched.
Subbed :) ty
Just wondering where I can buy a 10inch HUD with wireless Android auto and front bumper camera for a tesla model 3 Highland. I'm in Sydney Australia
Hey, thanks for the question. I haven’t yet seen a 10” version for the highland. Only a 6.2” inch. I actually just went from a 9” to this same smaller screen on my Model Y and have no regrets. The smaller screen works just as well and keeps the air vent free. It also sits a little closer than the 9” so I didn’t lose the entire 30% size difference. s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_mKV4w5c
That's not a "HUD"... that term has to do with a display projected onto the windshield, or a small transparent display right in front of the windshield. That's just a Drivers Instrument Cluster... and is one of the most valuable upgrades.
Thanks for taking the time to leave your comment. You’re absolutely correct but the HUD reference is probably worthwhile to make for viewers shopping for these despite being technically incorrect as it’s a common tag for these types of tesla accessories alongside “display” and “instrument cluster” especially with Chinese retailers.
The possibility of these power frunk kits opening while your driving is enough for me not to buy one. I have seen too many that have failed and caused so much damage! That as well as the difficult installation its better to buy the non powered shocks and just buy the safer power suction latch
The risk you are referring to is also what put me off buying one initially however if you look at the mechanics of the newer kits it should be impossible for an erroneous deployment to happen. They piggyback off the original frunk latch and cannot physically open the frunk unless the native tesla latch is released i.e. frunk is triggered open by the car natively. I believe what caused these issues in the past for hansshow were the optional kick sensors faulting which satonic never sold.
excellent job. excellent excellent excellent!
Subbed. All I ask is that you keep making videos, coz they're great!
Thank you!
Just got a hansshow kit for Christmas and all the components down to the manual(sans it being printed out on printer paper) look exactly like this. I wonder if hansshow started using the same supplier or bought kits from them. Thought id share as I was looking at this for some things to look out for with the kit.
Thanks for sharing! It’s about time Hansshow updated their kit. This is good news for everyone but I’d still trust Satonic to offer better after sales support and warranty. When I installed my Hansshow HUD I was sent the wrong instructions and didn’t get a response about an install question for 2 days. Satonic is more responsive and I’ve seen them send out parts for warranty issues quickly which is confidence inspriring.
@VanillaTesla they still haven't figured out the whole battery connection on the new 16v yet. Hopefully I don't need to find out about the warranty side of things for a long while.
Fingers crossed for you! What’s the issue with the battery connection?
@@VanillaTesla they still only provide a wire with a u end and just expect you to have hardware to figure it out with. Ended up having to angle it in there and hold it in place with the cap. Not the most elegant of solutions.
Ahh you must be on a model 3? I actually went out and bought a specific screw and nut size that I use to secure to the battery post on model 3 installs. M2.5x4mm screws and slim nuts. s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_mOO8oYK
So the power frunk.. not sure which one to buy. I have 23 model y long range.. don't know if it's Austin or whatever.. there are two options.. 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
I’d recommend confirming with their live chat to ensure you get the right kit. Their chat team is pretty responsive. Also, they are doing 25% off for Christmas with the code VANILLA so it’s a good time to pull the trigger.
@@VanillaTesla thank you for your reply! I was wondering if you know more information about the displays for the rear seats? I see you recomended a simpler smaller rear control multifunction system. I'm tempted to get a larger screen that lets people watch netflix? I suppose these have some drawbacks like do they block the vents too much? Or are they very laggy? I'm not clear on how these things work.. are they basically a cheap lousy independent tablet running android that needs to be signed in using a google account? I definitely don't want that..
No worries! There are very many versions nowadays but I have tried a few. They are exactly what you described. Completely independent needing their own google account and data connection. I also found it mildly annoying that since they are all LCD screens their standby screens were very bright and the versions that I’d tried did not have auto screen off and would not respond to third party apps trying to switch the screen off. I haven’t yet found a big screen version that I like enough to recommend. Airflow wasn’t a huge issue with the ones I tried despite having visibly smaller vents. Airflow for most models retained over 80% of the original flow. The 4gb and upward ram models are not laggy but the 2gb models are so avoid them at all costs.
HUD means head up display and its usually displayed in windscreen
I’m aware but also that’s what these accessories are often sold as online so it’s helpful to viewers to call them the common name so they are able to quickly search for them. Thanks for your comment!
yes its a bit confusing because you can buy actual HUD displays too@@VanillaTesla
Yes there are and it’s a fair call out. Thank you!
The Frunk mod I want is a felt liner for the entire inside so to help silent anything I might put in there that might slosh about.
You’re in luck there are neoprene and quilted options for that s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_mNu3jcc or s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_mMYWdhm
hey mate do you find the hud blocks too much airflow to the face?
Hey it does but I have never really minded it because I never used to have it right at me anyway. There’s a new model from Hansshow that I’m waiting to test that passes the airflow through. You can get the best price on it with the code “VANILLA” www.hautopart.com/products/hansshow-model-3-y-f9-8-9-inches-carplay-android-auto
Just a heads up that I’ve been using the smaller model for about 3 months now and much prefer it. Automatic front camera and no more airflow problems.
I want a RHD Tesla!!!
Move to Oz 😁
I had Yahasun power frunk installed on my model y over a year ago. It’s been very reliable and trouble free.
Interesting thanks for sharing. Does the unit only have one powered strut?
@@VanillaTesla yes only one
The automatic front opening looks amazing but it also seems like it would be a lot of work. And I wonder how in depth the mod is in terms of voiding the warrantee.
Fully reversible and plug and play so no warranty impact is the general consensus. It’s a lot of work for the Y (4 hours or so for a first timer) and much easier on the 3 (2.5 hours or so)
@@VanillaTesla Thats good to know, Thanks. I have a 3 so it seems like it wouldnt be too bad. I will look into it for sure. I am always worried about hitting the unlock button on the frunk but not being near my car and just having it be open.
The app will show you that it’s in the open state if you open your frunk. It’s a very low risk to be honest!
Oh also you editing is amazing. Music wasnt too loud, nicely interwined drone shots. It was all part of a cohesive story 👏
Thank you!
Looking for accessory to light up the 3rd row in model y. Have you come across anything? Thank you
Hey, unfortunately not yet. The 7 seat Y is not available in my market.
Hi, what happened to the $500 referral bonus?
Has been reduced to 6 months of free supercharging and 3 months of FSD.
Very helpful video for both above average products but also budget items, thanks
My 2018 Tesla M3 does not have a usb port in the glovebox.
It should have ports with data in the center console
Any recommendations for the Tesla paint protection? Like the clear coat, which is well priced. What about a front bumper Tesla Bra? for long trips for avoiding paint chipping. Last a dashboard cover when parking under the sun. thank you
I have ppf myself on the front bumper and recommend it however it’s not something that is easily DIY’d and I would recommend a professional install. This looks to be a good dashboard cover s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_mtkCFJq
Timestamps. Timestamps. Timestamps.
Hey great video. I always wanted interior lights but it seems hard. Which tutorial or video did u watch
Hey thanks man. Do you mean ambient lights that go into the wood trim? I’ve seen a couple of teslas pretty badly damaged from that mod so I would advise against the trim LED mod. The doors and seats are easy to do but the wiring is very tedious and time consuming. All up I would advise against that type of mod unless you really really like it.
@@VanillaTeslayeah the led ambient lighting. Is it possible to do only the doors and not the wood trim? I was also wondering which tutorial or guide did you view to install the lights
Apologies for the late response! I don’t have any aftermarket interior lights installed only an LED strip in the frunk.
Is the Carview difficult to install ?
It’s pretty straightforward as it’s really only two ports that are plug and play. Less than an hour all up for a first timer.
So this V6 does have safty protection such as not opening for a while driving ?
Yeah it does. No recorded cases of it ever deploying unexpectedly. It piggy backs off the original frunk deployment mechanism so technically it should be impossible for it to misfire while driving.
@@VanillaTesla thanx
What? Jump start a tesla??? why would you need a jump start?... am I missing something?
Primarily for other cars not for your own car. The new Teslas run a 16v low voltage system so you can’t jumpstart other cars as the voltage is too high. Also just handy to have a powerbank and flashlight around. Theoretically you could use it to pop the frunk jumper release on another stranded tesla as well. Lots of good reasons to have a powerbank/jumper kit in your car!
That left hand drive hub does not work to power a game controller. Had to return it.
Hey James, thanks for letting me know. Was it definitely a power issue not a data issue? Could it have potentially been a faulty unit?
@@VanillaTesla power issue. Read some reviews to confirm. Got a different one and it works fine.
“Under 50”
Hello had a question I don’t have a port in the glovebox mine is 2020 model Y how can I see about something different to install in there? Or can you install one in the glovebox USB port?
Your 2020 Model Y has the USB A data port in the center console and no USB ports in the glove box.
Ok sorry new to the Tesla thing lol but I had one more question so since I don’t have USB on glove box can I still get the cool sounds for my horn? Thank you
Your car won’t have the boombox speaker required for that. Tesla offers a retrofit for a couple of hundred dollars so if you want the cool horn sounds you can book a service and ask for the boombox. Be warned however that your car will also make sounds while driving as that speaker is part of a pedestrian alert system.
what would i need a usb hub for?
Game controllers for the games in arcade
somehow my tesla wontr connect two wireless controller at a time, it says it can connect to 2 device via bluetooth (my phone being one of them) any idea how to fix it?
Are you on the latest software? This is only possible since 2023.26
they are now saying the tesla app will open fine but wont close it. it is on thier website .this is for the 2023 model 3. they are saying it has something to do with the sys upgrade..i contacted them ,they say they are working on it..but you can close it from inside the car thru the touch screen..
Hiya that’s correct. It also still works via the tesla shortcut widgets on iphone and via third party apps and their api. The code change is likely to support future OEM powered frunks like in the cybertruck.
Thx. The powered frunk is very nice!
I installed the LED that came with the SATONIC frunk kit and ran into the same problem. Curiously the Tesla app doesn't work to close the frunk but the infotainment screen button does work. Wonder why. Anyway I was wondering if anyone knows a solution that doesn't require replacing the whole LED strip. That would be brilliant. Edit: I just rewatched your video on the SATONIC and how they updated the LED module to hook into the battery directly but as far as I can tell it just plugs into the button but no real install guide was included. So maybe I'll just have to contact support...
Hey, sorry to hear that they didn’t send you the updated LED harness that is frunk compatible. I’d definitely contact them for it so they can ship one out. It’s curious that your app doesn’t trigger the frunk? The app should work natively as well.
@@VanillaTesla It definitely works from the app before I installed the LED but since it fails while the LED is on, the app can only open it. I can only assume the infotainment software button somehow controls the frunk differently from the app, which surprised me.
Also a surprise to me and an interesting development. When I had my older LED type the app, screen and fob all worked correctly. Does it not trigger at all when you press it in the app? Or only on open and not close? I wonder if this is related to a change specifically in the app.
@@VanillaTesla Ah I see... I tested again with the Stats app (iOS) and it is able to close via the Tesla API. It looks like perhaps the official Tesla app has been updated so the button no longer responds when the frunk is open. :/ I can also tell this because there is no haptic event when I tap it. It makes sense because the app is only SUPPOSED to open the frunk.
I suspected that may be the case but was hoping it isn’t so. That’s unfortunate. Hopefully they roll that change back! Thanks for confirming.
Could you do a follow-up video on the HUD installation and config?
I’ll do that
Do you know if the console unit continually drains the 12v Battery? Or do you know the mA/Amps it uses when sleeping? Worried about the battery dying if I park it at the airport for over 2 weeks
Hey thanks for the question. The standby power is negligible and will not have any battery impact. There’s nothing active in the circuitry when it’s in a passive state so you’d be looking at a single digit mA standby draw if any. Nothing to worry about. I’ve had my car parked for weeks without charge multiple times (I travel a lot) and haven’t had low volt issues.
@VanillaTesla Thanks man, just read lots of reddit feed about batteries packing it and tesla blaming the power kits for draining it
What’s the center data module for ?
To restore data to the ports. They had data prior to the silicone chip shortage in 2021 and Tesla then converted them to be power (charging) only.
Hi Vanilla Tesla, are you on Facebook or Messenger? I'm also from Australia and just wanted to ask you some questions.
Hey mate feel free to reach out via email at vanillatesla@mail.com and we can go from there!
Awesome stuff bro! Appreciate all these recommendations. Keep doing your thing with these videos.
Thanks for the positive comment!
Love your honest and humble approach to reviewing this product. Appreciate it! I’ve been going back and fourth on installing a powered frunk. This encourages me to research and that it can be done right.
Thank you. I’d really encourage you to give it a shot. It’s such a great quality of life mod :)
@@VanillaTeslaIve been reading through the comments and sounds like you have had no issues with it over the last year ? I’m little worried regarding voiding my warranty and it leading to any bigger issues and things of that nature.
Hey, not only have I had no issues with it I’ve also installed it on a fair few vehicles and there hasn’t been a single issue to date. They are great little units and the install does not modify any stock parts and is plug and play and fully reversible. The lock piggyback mechanism’s design is pretty confidence inspiring. It’s fully reliant on the Tesla locking mechanism for release so I don’t have any concerns recommending it. If you google “satonic frunk failure” there are still no examples online. I’ve only seen one example on youtube of a suction mechanism problem but that was a faulty part from factory on a new install. I expect that the part would have been promptly replaced under warranty.
Good channel but a brief comment; we all know it’s called Tesla, why do you guys call it Tezla? 😀
Haha it’s definitely teSla. 😅
Why do Americans called Mazda Maahzda?
Or Hyun-DIE instead of Hunday like Sunday? 😅
So I install this on a 2023 and you got to cut the frunk because the new smaller strut that came with the car is so small. So you need to cut it otherwise it won’t fully close at all!
I just installed a 2023 model 3 (shanghai) over the weekend and didn’t have to cut anything it was plug and play. What factory and what did you have to cut? No cutting should be required.
I got the Hansshow one. But ya it won’t close, flip the adapter they provided and it won’t close about 1”, so after cutting it, it would close every time
@@VanillaTeslathis is for the model 3, the model y had no issue for 2023. But the 2023 model 3, tesla swap Out the strut
Ahh.. sorry to hear you had issues with the Hansshow but glad you got it sorted in the end. I did a Satonic V6S install on a 2023 Model 3 on Sunday and it was all plug and play. The adapter that mounts to the hood they provided can be installed in two directions ball inward or outward depending on the year of the car which impacts the alignment. Suspect this was your issue and hansshow hasn’t updated their kit with the newer adapter. Last I checked they are still selling the same kit from 2021.
Which accessory is the best? :)
The LED door sills for price and simplicity for sure. They look amazing. But for utility, definitely the power frunk. Use it all the time :)
@@VanillaTesla haha, alright, thanks
After 3 months of using the satonic auto frunk kit, how is it holding up? Still recommend Satonic product over Hansshow’s? TIA.
Hey yes 100% I’ve been using the kit for almost 12 months now and have actually helped out with more than 10 installs. The kits have only gotten better to be honest. They have kept the V6S name but made incremental improvements along the way. This is definitely still the best (and best value) kit in the market today IMO.
@@VanillaTesla thanks for the prompt reply. Appreciate for your honest feedback. Since the kit also includes the LED trunk lighting, will you recommend to use it with the frunk kit OR use Hansshow LED lighting instead? Will the LED lighting turn off after closing the trunk? Do you feel the battery drain with the LED lighting installed?
Great question. It includes frunk lighting not trunk not sure if that’s a typo. Satonic advised me about two weeks ago that they’ve now solved the LED button compatibility issue and all new orders will include a frunk emergency release button compatible led strip but I’m still waiting for a sample to test myself. Given the available information I would hold off on buying the Hansshow LED and just going with the frunk kit first tbh. The LED is only a 10 minute install at any other time anyway. LED lighting turns off once the frunk closes. Battery drain is completely negligible.
@@VanillaTesla yes - that was a typo. Thanks for reading my mind. :) That was my main concern at first glance. Thanks again for the comment. Looking forward to your next testing video.
a bit disappointed that you didn't have roof shades. That should be one of the must have. Nice to have, a mini fridge.
Thanks for your comment. I do have and recommend roof shades highly but don’t think they make the top 10 in the “tech” category. I will cover them in another video.
Careful with usb hubs. Mine nuked one of my usb ports.
In your Tesla? Did it melt plastic?
@@VanillaTesla yep. The plug stayed in and the rest was cooked. Had to use pliers to pull it out.
Holy smokes wow. That’s a shocker. Thanks for sharing and glad your Tesla is ok!
