Transcribing Mark Allen's Cover of The Thrill is Gone @crossroadbluessecrets In this video I take a look at Mark Allen's version of the thrill is gone. Mark is a street musician from Cardiff and recently posted a video of the thrill is gone. I thought I'd work out a couple of his licks for you and then do a bit of improv over the track at the end. The song is in b minor so B Minor pentatonic is...

Hi John - Lesson request - Gary Moore - Red House (Blues For Jimi)
Thanks for the comparo. I am buying the LYR
Glad I could help
Hello John!!! Incredible. Thanks so much for your great lesson. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😀
Glad you liked it, just a rough idea of what he's doing 👍
Thanks for this John. Great tone btw 😊
My pleasure, I was going to mention the sound but I forgot! I'm just plugged into a Yamaha THR10 the old one. Just the effects that are on the amp.
Thx again. Generally speaking, I prefer anything over blues tips, but if you’re going to do it, B.B. is a fine choice. A true giant. 👑🎸🤙
You're welcome! Sorry, I will add some other tips 👍
@@crossroadbluessecrets No need for apologies, brother. This was a cool tip. Besides, most people prefer blues stuff, so you are wise to offer a variety. Follow your heart and keep rocking 🤙
Noice
Thanks so much 👍
instant subscribe. some of us learn best this way. thank you. looking forward to more 🤙🎸🧠
Thanks so. much, I will do more on this style.
I can’t imagine how loud that must be…I’ve never got above 3-4
Ah... that's where the attenuator came in handy!
Could you do a tutorial on that little intro in the beginning?
Yes I'll do that one for you 😀👍
Just stumbled across this. fifty years playing acoustic and just learning electric. This takes a lot of the mystery out of using the blues jr and I suspect many other amps. Thanks for putting this out there for us.
You're welcome, glad it helped, trying to get to the bottom of these things can be confusing!
Thanks man. You've put my mind at rest as iam waiting on Blues junior 3 iam purchasing and was concerned as my main pedal is Big muff. Cheers.
You're welcome! They are lovely amps, I'm sure you'll love it when it arrives, let me know!
Nice
Thanks!
It sounds absolutely shit. No beef. No substance. Just ear-piercing treble. I hate that sound. Just thin.
I have had mine for about a year and it is a beautiful amp
That's great, glad you're enjoying yours 👍
Already at volume 3 and master 12 it’s too damn loud. So, I got a Warmdrive and use it to get a decent preamp overdrive sound at volume level 2.
nice 👍 I normally put the amp in another room and close the door!
I think a basic rule while playing a blues junior, escpeially tweed, is to scoop the mids (like at 2). It really opens up and sounds less boxy. At least for me
Thanks for the tip 👍
TF is a JTM 800?
Yes
I don’t see the problems. My Jr amp was easy to dial in and it sounds awesome.
Yes you’re right just plug In and that’s it!
SUENA MUY BIEN Y ME TRAEN BELLOS RECUERDOS ROMANTICOS

Sitting’ in a company truck in Winston Salem, NC totally blasting this in a nice, quiet neighborhood on a beautiful sunny day!!! Thank you!!! Sounds great man!!!
Thanks so much for watching and your kind words, that sounds great 👍
Got Live at the Regal 😎
That's a great album!
Thank you great video, 4 helpful reference guitar sounds using the fender blues junior.
Thanks so much, hope it helps
sounds great
Thanks so much 🙏
Dude, nice job, thank you so much!
Glad it helped! 🙏
Messi
I seem to get that a lot 😀
That bend was wild. Love it
Great video , but he did not speak of what the fat switch does & how it boost & changes your tone for a solo . Also there is a footswitch jack next to the speaker plug . I use a foot switch with mine for a fat lead boost . Rock on!!
If I make another video on the Junior I’ll do that.
very well done
Thanks 🙏 hope it helps
Thanks again for showing us this stuff!!!
You’re welcome! Hope it helps 👍
Thank you
You're welcome
Paying my respects to the king B.B. King ❤🙏🏾
🙏 it’s always a bit of a work in progress! 😀
Love this, are there tabs for this please?
Thanks so much! I can do some and put them up on my Patreon
My blues horizon gets wider and wider. Great sound & playing 😎
That’s very kind of you 🙏 I’m always trying to improve.. one day… 😀
Big help, thanks a bunch, Strat Player! 😄
Happy to help!
Nicely done sir. Now I go practise.Greetings from Holland.
Thanks so much! I used to live in Utrecht I really enjoyed living in Holland 👍 greetings from NZ
Wish you were here is a PF song. Wish I was half as good is more my style 😂
😀😀
Thank you for sharing those licks. Cheers from Indonesia.
Thanks so much for watching 👍
To’ work the amp in its sweet spot you’ve got to crank both the pre- and the power amp to 12, switch off the fat-switch and turn down the mids to 2-3 maximum and work the rest with your guitar volume/tone knobs. And yes, it’s insanely loud, like all fender amps.
I wish more fender amps had a master volume like the Junior.
Happy Memorial Day, even though you’re nowhere near the States! That sounds & looks great! You always sound great dude!!!
Thanks so much! Happy Memorial Day to you 👍 yes, they look nice the ToneKings
Nice but without an attenuator these settings would melt the walls and deafen anyone within 100yds...
It's not too loud but after saying that too loyd for at home!
I don’t know how I missed this video but I’m tuned in now dude! Thank you!!!
Thanks so much 🙏
Wow, enjoy 😎
Thanks so much, I like the clean sound, it feels nice to play through.
Red Hose sounded good - the rest sounded tinny and kinda cheap.
The second part is what my girlfriend said about me…
Epic
👍 Thanks
Hi John, I have just discovered your channel and am amazed at the range of information that you cover. I have almost viewed everyone of your videos in a single day. I am hoping you can share some gems on the problem I have in finding a good blues setting on my guitar & amp. I am in my mid 70's and want to play a bit of blues to satisfy myself. I like a nice smooth creamy tone for blues (Always difficult to describe) with a bit bite when played hard. I have a 1980's MIJ Strat and a 2017 Strat American Pro. My amp is a fully loaded Lazy J J10 amp with spring reverb. Any suggestions on what I should do to get a good tone?
Hi 👋 so sorry I didn’t know your name! But thanks so much for watching! that’s very kind. You must be sick of me by now, I would be! You have a lovely amp, I also like a creamy tone, you know I must say I find those type of tones easy to get through modlers and plug -ins but quite hard to recreate in the real world through an amp. Is there anyone you like that has the tone you like? That way you can see what gear they are using. For a creamy sound the Wampler gearbox pedal is lovely. Those tones are sometimes using two distortion pedals stacked.
Hi John, thank you for your reply to my post. Apology I should have added my name which is Gerry. I should also have added that I have a G2D Cream-Tone pedal, along with a 1980’ original Ibanez SD9 which I never use. I like clean smooth tones with a bit of grit when picked hard. Robert Cray type tones as well as your tone at 8.22 mins
What version of the Blues Jr. is yours?
This is a BJ Three
You possibly should have said something about the overall volume in the room which these settings produce - with that sort of Hendrixy first sound you had the Master on 11 and Volume (which is sort of "Pre") on 8. I'm actually pretty confident my bandmates would consider killing me if I cranked my BJ to these settings in our rehearsal room... That being said I do think resp. even positively now that cranking the Blues Junior’s Master to somewhere between 10 and 12 is a good way to go get the amp to respond really dynamically to the pick an to get a really "solid" tone (even if that means you have to set the normal Volume/Pre to just 3 or 4 to avoid being too loud for your bandmates wellbeing). However, you'll then have to use some overdrive or distortion pedal for a certain amount of grid. But that's not bad either, as you can easily dial in the right - possibly not that much - amount of overdrive on the pedal without affecting the overall loudness so much. If you listen closely to many Blues guys who have a seemingly "hefty" tone, you may find that they actually don't have THAT much distortion and compression at all. There is a certain solidness of tone that springs very much rom driving the power tubes sufficiently (i.e. setting the Master high enough).
Thanks so much for writing. Yes sorry, volume in the room was zero because this was recorded through the ox box no effects added through that though just the cab and room mics. I did do this without the ox box and in a tiny room it was too loud so I had to put it outside in a different room. Another good thing to make the tone bigger is to get a fuzz and turn the volume on guitar down.
Thank you very much! Excellent video lesson! 👏👏👏👍
You are welcome! 🙏
