CSCS & The Build Network UK episode 1
In the first episode of a year-long partnership, CSCS CEO Sean Kearns joins Andy in the studio. CSCS cards are one of the most talked about and, often most confusing, topics on social media. There is a raft of changes including grandfather rights, the debate over the green card, and many other topics for discussion.
The Build Network UK welcomes CSCS as one of their new partners and wants to work with them in order to have all these questions answered. Each month there will be a new topic of conversation for Andy to put to Sean.
The idea is very clear - for you the viewer to be able to ask questions in the comments below each video for Andy to put to Sean. Love them or loathe them, CSCS cards are here to stay and we have to work together as an industry to move forward. This is your chance to put across your views and questions in the comments so they can be answered. We look forward to hearing from you all.

    What’s the difference between women being paid to perform and wear certain outfits for a room of predominantly men vs a women who chooses to wear an outfit that makes her feel confident… I’d say a pretty significant difference!! Not place blame on the organisers of the event and credit to them for apologising and realising they got it wrong but in terms of this video, likening the two situations and the differing comments towards them is totally inappropriate!!

    I get what you're trying to do Andy, but it does come across as man-splaining. A balanced report would have included quotes from the performers, and clips from the video with the CEO of OTT, surely? And, if you're going to quote from an email thread, you should show it all, otherwise it's you choosing what we see.

    This video is an excellent example of gas lighting and by using two different events, with different women, attending for different reasons as an example of the difference applied to "hyper sexualisation" demonstrates this. I agree that the statics should have additional information as to how it was gained, however its not implausible that this might sit above the UK average of 3.3% of women who have reported being sexual assaulted given the disproportionate number of women working in the construction industry when compared to men. www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/articles/sexualoffencesvictimcharacteristicsenglandandwales/yearendingmarch2022#:~:text=The%20Crime%20Survey%20for%20England%20and%20Wales%20(CSEW)%20year%20ending,attempts)%20in%20the%20last%20year This is not an unbalanced or unbiased presentation and I'm curious as to what you think it means to be on the same page, with the same values?

    I'm an electrician by trade, I spent 14 years working from apprentice to business owner and realised that theres minimal to no support in the construction industry and what I mean by that is tool box talks are a waste of time, I signed countless ones but never read them, mental health first aiders within companies are people who I wouldn't trust speaking to as theres a huge separation between engineers and management and the trust isn't there. Apparently I had access to coaching sessions but who reads the small print? In 14 years working for some of the largest companies in UK I never once went on a mental health wellbeing course or had someone come in and talk about the seriousness of it. Its debatable I know, its my fault for not reading the tool box talks or small print or trusting management I get that and take ownership of it but there also huge flaws in the industry. I've started a new company called Onward Shift and we're focusing all our attention the construction industry in hope to implement a positive change. If you're interested in collaborating there reach out, we're here to help but supporting and building awareness. Keep doing what you're doing, it's inspiring, thank you! Interesting to watch, if rather depressing in parts. It's always disturbing to hear people in positions of power and influence saying they don't know what we need to do to get the suicide numbers down. They're clearly just not listening to the right people! But full marks to Mark for his honesty. Suicide prevention is often about helping people who feel helpless - whether they're a tradesman 'on-the-ground' or one of the 'people at the top' of the industry. Helping them help people who are struggling. Helping people in crisis. Helping people not get as far as crisis. It's so important to recognise that suicide is 'not just a mental health issue' and that suicide is a MEANS of death not a CAUSE of death, so we can focus on those underlying causes of suicide crisis, and tackle the problem at source, not just put a sticking plaster on the symptoms. We absolutely do need to work together, pool our resources, pool our knowledge, pool our energy, collaborate not compete. As the number of people and organisations wanting to get involved grows every year, that's both a problem and an opportunity. Let's try and keep it as an opportunity, not make it another problem! We need to learn from 'experts by experience', 'professional experts' and research, eg the kind of risk assessment system Mark describes has been discredited around-the-world over the past 10 years, and found to actually be a cause of suicide deaths!

  • @lynwhittle542
    @lynwhittle542 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    No one in this industry is talking about neurodivergent and the link to suicidal thoughts, yet construction has a high number of neurodivergent people. Rsd amongst neurodivergent individuals is high and it's horrible and it comes about so fast and what can happen during that period can make us fee us out of control of our own life and actions. For me it was the way the industry throw me into Rsd not caused me to attempt to end my life, it happened so quick and I asked for help to stop feeling the way I was feeling and the company I was working for were not interested tild me to go to the lighthouse charity, but never checked in, because I'm self employed and they washed their hands of me. Yet if my attempt to end Mt life worked it would of been a direct result of the way they communicate with me and didn't give me the clarity my brain needed. Rsd is real, it's scary, it's horrible, it eats at you, it happens so quick and because it's so horrible you want a hole to come and take you away. This needs discussing because I'm certain others in the industry ended their lives while experiencing RSD

  • @lynwhittle542
    @lynwhittle542 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    No one cared when I attempt to end my life this year I was told to go to the lighthouse industry, what I needed was clarity, and the company I was working for were not interested in giving me the clarity I needed and Rsd kicked in which took over my life and I couldn't get the thoughts of failure out of my head and it was so painful I attempted to end my life and I told the company I was going to do so, they told me to go to the lighthouse charity and have never checked in with me. Companies need to look at how the self employed are treated and they need to learn about neurodivergent and RSD

    Something that strikes me is that businesses have to pay Levy on self employed workers more than they pay for PAYE workers, yet getting funding as self employed is either non existent or the information on how to apply as self employed is not available, hence myself as self employed I have to pay to train and I can't get funding to pay, so I won't be able to get a trade CSCS card, because I can't pay for training, yet the companies I've worked for pay more in levy because I'm self employed, doesn't add up and if funding is available it should be better advertised and information on how to apply should be easily to find

    Suicide rates will continue to rise if the industry doesn't start to understand the impact of RSD on the neurodivergent workforce and start looking at how the self employed are treated There is 1 in 4 in the industry are neurodivergent, this figure is probably a lot higher because many will never of been diagnosed and individuals who are ADHD or autistic experience RSD, full on self hate, eating away inside, feeling of being a failure, feelings do strong about not wanting to live and at times it comes about so quick because something triggered your mot in control of those feelings and emotions and yet the industry doesn't understand this at all and the direct link to suicide Someone who is ADHD are five times more likely to die by suicide 40% od hospital admissions for suicide are autistic Some site environments are also sensory hell, and the information is not available to help sites create environments that are more inclusive

  • @lynwhittle542
    @lynwhittle542 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Neurodivergent, RSD and self employment treatment needs looking at as all have a massive impact on the high suicide rate And for many people with ADHD their medication is all over the place, many not able to obtain since the pandemic which brings about meltdowns and full on RSD so bad that the impulse behaviour is devastating, RSD is horrible, really horrible, the self hate you have for yourself and it can come about so quick the industry needs to understand this Plus wouldn't it be amazing if the industry started creating welfare that was actually sensory friendly, so workforce on larger sites have a space that is inclusive for them,not overwhelming

    When you're laid off due to cut backs it seems impossible finding another job in this industry And flexibility in jobs is certainly not advertised, there is so much more the industry could be doing to keep people from leaving when laid off due to cut backs and look at flexibility, not everyone can commit to a 10 he day plus travel on top it's off putting. But the big issue is that the industry is insecure and you can join think going well and then bomb no work, yet we're told the industry needs 250,000 people, those opportunities are not easy to find and even harder to get an interview for

  • @lynwhittle542

    Neurodivergent training and link between neurodivergent and suicides needs to be looked at in the industry How the self employed are treated needs to be looked at in the industry Close to 20 percent of individuals with gambling disorder also experience ADHD, Approximately 25% of adults being treated for alcohol and substance use disorders are diagnosed with ADHD. Construction has an above AVG % of individuals who are neurodivergent with many most likely having ADHD, hence the figures above are most likely higher in construction The industry needs to learn about RSD and how this affects people and the way they think about themselves I really want the industry to start taking neurodivergent and RSD seriously

  • @lynwhittle542

    I had been talking to sites about the stress curve and creating environments more people go home saying they've had a good day, its easy to do, its real, we should want everyone to go home saying they've had a good day But RSD is real reaction, understand RSD, understand neurodivergence, understand sensory overload, do more about how the self employed are treated We shouldn't be saying the self employed should accept that they will be lsid of with no notice, no consideration to how the news is delivered, no indication of how they will receive the information,no indication if the person is neurodivergent and chsnge is hsrd, RSD is trauma, no indication if the person has a support network at home Look at self employed treatment Look at neurodivergent Look at RSD Look at welfare with sensory needs considered Look at creating workplaces where more say they've had a good day at work

    If I was given money I would mandate training on neurodivergence because there is a high % of individuals in the industry who are neurodivergent and yet the industry doesn't understand how individuals can be affected and my experience is have no idea how individuals experience RSD, Steps can be taken to look at including sensory friendly welfare so individuals don't get sensory overwhelm during lunch, but how about understanding the effects of communication on RSD, unexpected news of laying someone of can heighten RSD which brings about thoughts and acts of suicide, and this is just one example of how RSD can come about

    My experience is that in England we have come to rely on MHFAs, that is to far past the stress curve, the industry should look at picking people up when they start to move out of the yellow zone of the curve, but instead we wait for individuals to speak up and all too often if they do speak up it's in the red zone and then my experience was go and talk to the lighthouse charity
