    I swear to god, the TH-cam algorithm is reading my mind. This is describing exactly what I’m going through, as if you glimpsed into my soul. I’m easily, by far, the best engineer in my team. I’m so good because unlike my colleagues I have a passion for it, so I’ve been reading up, doing personal projects, developing my skills, when other people called it a day after putting in the hours. But I’m also better at other things that should be the job of others, like communicating with customers, documentation, trainings, people skills… this means I feel compelled to be constantly reviewing, fixing and improving the mediocre output of my colleagues. This is being recognized, so I have been promoted to the technical lead of my team, but considering that I’m personally responsible for 60% of success in a team of 5, my salary is not even close to my importance, and instead far too close to that of my colleagues that haven’t developed or progressed on their skills in 20 years. When asked for a raise, it was denied, despite listing an almost comically long list of accomplishments and recognitions as “proof of worthiness”. After doing this for 4 years, I’m getting increasingly frustrated, bored, thinking to move on to a smaller, more tech-minded company where I will finally be able to learn new things again from minds greater than mine. As the saying goes, if you’re the smartest guy in the room, you’re in the wrong room. But my job has perks too. Despite my many responsibilities, I’m so good and fine tuned at what I do, when I stop trying hard, I can often complete my job in 4h or less, leaving half the day free for other activities. Since people know I deliver results, I have a reputation and very flexible working hours, basically, I’m not being controlled or micro managed. This has huge benefits of its own. Pay is also good, even though, as mentioned, not what I deserve considering my importance and output. Now I’m struggling with the decision to stay and just take it easy - deal with the frustration, “stop caring”, and enjoy the perks, and make something useful with my “free time”, or look for something more intellectually stimulating but potentially sacrificing some of the freedoms and safety of the corporate job.

    Hey man, you mention to change companies every 2 years, which I agree with. But, what if you are working at the company that is the most prestigious in a given field. Would it be smart to stay at the prestigious employer and move up the ladder or go to a lower quality employer for a promotion? For example, if you had an associate job at Goldman Sachs, would it be worth taking a promotion to move to a different less-known finance firm

    • @RichGilbert
      @RichGilbert 11 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      It would depend on the specific circumstance. There are times when staying is better. For the median, switching increases income

  • @arttupakarinen7642
    @arttupakarinen7642 วันที่ผ่านมา

    näeh... i believe you will get more rich by 1. having the rare combo of genetics/circumstances, 2. willingness to SERVE. Ofcourse you are selfish, there is nothing wrong in that. Ofcourse you keep your own benefits at higher priority, that is just right; but to serve, means to make good for the highest amount of people possible. If that is weapons tech, sure, good. We need weapons. If that is building AI robots, thats great. You get it? If you can SERVE million people, you will be millionaire. You CAN steal, rob and kill, but that will cost you your soul, Maybe that will get you some wealth, but that is nothing in comparison to for example google. And what does google do? it SERVES the whole world!

    I think the keyword here is measurement. Measurement is a quantitative term relating to the conversion of information into numbers. There is another form of analysis, qualitative, which is a human judgment of the person as a whole. It has its own problems of bias and misunderstanding, but it fills some holes created by the reductive nature of measurement. It does not scale well unfortunately, hard to properly judge someone if you have 1000 people to judge and short time to do it

    I’ve found that 90% of lifestyle creep is caused by having high maintenance friends and family lol. The better off you all get, the more others want to spend, and you feel obligated to match their spending. Best thing for my wallet was being single, not living close to family, and having friends who valued facetime over spending money as a way to show they cared.

    5:21 Such a policy cannot exist; it is illegal. If this is true, Google can be prosecuted by EEOC. The only thing they can do is to form representative candidate pools, but they cannot make hiring decisions solely based on the protected characteristics. They likely lowered standards to hire more people, not because of the diversity goals.

    We need to identify all the really, really intelligent people, put them on a paradise island where they want for nothing; give them absolutely anything and everything they desire, and hope they come up with (which I'm sure they would, at least a few good things), some really smart, new breakthrough innovations. You're right, this world is not set up for really, really smart people; most of them get alienated, just like the really sad story of William Sidis. Especially now, more than ever before, with the thought police/crazy woke culture we currently live in, combined with the genetic plummet in IQ due to who's breeding the most (the least smart) versus who's breeding the least (really, really smart people) on average.

    It took me too long to learn this: Be a bit unreliable. If you're always reliable and dependable, then the next time you have a sick child at home or you forget about an email, everybody's upset. If you're always just a bit unreliable, if they never know exactly what time you come in in the morning, they appreciate everything you do on your 3 projects. Also, if someone from another group asks you to help in their project, tell them they need to talk to your manager and explain their business need. My manager will discuss with me and we'll get back to you with our decision. It works everytime because they will never talk to your manager about why they need you to do their work 😅

    I've been researching this topic for a few years and comparing the results with both historical figures as well as some real life cases I know. After many years of hard work, Stephen Hawking, for example, was not making enough money for a good quality of life, he only started making more money after a marketing specialist advised him to write the book "A Brief History of Time" and he told him not to write it for other scientis, but for the general public. They invested a lot of money in publicity and sold millions of copies. He became famous and made a lot of money because he kind of got lucky to meet the right person for what he needed at the right time. I've personally met dozens of people who are smart university professors, inventors, etc... but who are poor or in the middle class. Most highly intelligent people never get famous nor rich for two main reasons: 1. They don't care much about becoming rich because they are already very rich and famous in their own minds. They have fun alone only by thinking about their own ideas, writing books or papers or creating new machines, etc... 2. Making money is earthy, but thinking and creating new things is heavenly. Thus, extremelly intelligent people spend too much time "in heaven" and little time "on Earth".

Hi Jeff, As discussed earlier, I requested x and the response from your end was y. I’m able to do z but it would be really helpful if an and b could have happened but they won’t be as you said c when I raised it.
