    Most boring, but one of the most important (and underrated) pieces of equipment, that can also cause soooo many issues, from EMI-issues (both radiating or going unstable with large RF fields), to going unstable with complex loads. Love them when they work, hate them when they cause issues and blow up a prototype costing thousands of dollars…

    • @Hellhound604

      As far as HP is concerned… fantastic, until you get some junior engineer or intern trying to use it, after an experienced person used it, and have no idea to connect the sense-wires to the equipment he tries to test…. Ouch!!!!

    5:30 So, how HP is doing the switching? That paricular model I mean. By switching the transformator outputs, is a good thing for a linear PSU and you know why. I do unuderstand the benefits of a quality PSU, I built myself few, from discrete zenner to 723IC or 741 and many 2N3055 in parallel (I am talking about linear PSU), simple or master/slave or symetrical, for my bench. What I do not understand is why you do not show what really can do those cheap PSUs. Oh they are broken because they use a elegant solution (albeit cheap) to protect and increase the life of the regulating transistor. Or, because you do not like them. Anyway, I would not pay 999USD for a lab PSU that can do the same (for me, as I do not need RS232, of other stuff) as a 100€ PSU built by myself.

    • @Equiptek_Labs_Inc
      @Equiptek_Labs_Inc 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      HP power supplies always have a single output winding and don't need switching . Their regulators are designed correctly and hardly ever fail. You can download all old HP power supply schematics from multiple websites and analyzer them.

    • @sebastian19745
      @sebastian19745 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Equiptek_Labs_Inc I know that you are right, and I also apreciate the good old lab power supplies, including those from HP that are well designed. What I like is the efficiency, I preffer a PSU that do not waste 100W on the regulator transistor as heat, but 10-20W. And switching the input achieves that. I consider that you are biased - my opinion - and you should give to Cesar what is his. Saying that those clicking PSU are broken even if they works well, just to sell the HP is not good.

  • @Krawacik3d
    @Krawacik3d 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Did your measurement take power factor into account? This kind of measurement results in VA, not W. Also, your additional transformer looks to be a ~50W job, it'd be long gone before any breaker will trip.

    • @Equiptek_Labs_Inc
      @Equiptek_Labs_Inc 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We are demonstrating that stepdown transformers waste electricity without load and are not measuring the actual billed kW's here. The control transformer has a fuse on the primary (most modern ones have a fuse holder already attached to the terminals like at 4:10).

    Come to Germany, we have 250% since 2017. We don't have peak rates in overall, but depending on region you pay about $0.67 per kWh, a monthly connection fee up to $23 and if you're a business with high load, you'll have an additional charge on your daily max used kW peak, net building/up keeping fee and federal taxes. When you're using 30-80kW peak during one hour and about 200kWh per day. You have an average of $1,35 per kWh and $300 per month only to get a grid connection.

But according to UK.gov site, which publishes tables with kW rates for EU counties for small, medium, large and extra large consumers. Germany kW rate in 2023 for small consumer was 18.36 pence.

    If transient rating doesn't matter why does Fluke then specs them in their manuals and offshore brands do not? I guess Fluke forgot to consult you the "BIG EXPERT".

  • @foogod4237
    @foogod4237 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is utterly idiotic. First, you show ads for modern handheld DMMs, then you do your "tests" on *absolutely ancient* benchtop DMMs from *literally 40 years ago* and pretend that they have some relevance to anything anybody is going to buy today. They don't. Multimeter designs and construction are completely different now than they were in the 1980s. This is all complete BS. And who gives a sh*t if your DMM can't handle a 4 kV transient, anyway? Nobody's going to see that actually happen on a real 120V power line anyway, unless it gets hit by lightning or something, and then you're almost certainly going to have far more serious things to worry about than whether your meter's OK.. This sort of test has absolutely nothing to do with any realistic real world situations, and does not in any way reflect how things will hold up under reasonable normal use. And no, Fluke meters are *not* automatically better in every other way too, and you haven't done anything to show that they are. Just making stupid claims doesn't actually make it true. Fluke meters actually are more expensive for a reason, but the reasons are nothing that will matter to any hobbyist, or even most independent professionals. They're expensive because *corporations* that use lots of them rely on them staying the same and staying in production for a long time, so they can get the exact same model of meter that they bought ten years ago and it will behave exactly the same way (so they're traceable and they don't have to keep recertifying new devices every few years). *It's all mostly about paperwork and convenience for big companies,* not because the internals of the meters are really any different than most others are, and certainly not because they're better in any noticeable way than lots of other perfectly good, much cheaper meters. Don't believe me? Here's a video from a well-respected electrical engineer that explains it much better than I can: th-cam.com/video/ay9wFQAW19Y/w-d-xo.html Anybody who says otherwise is just trying to make up excuses to justify their own stupid decision in paying too much for a meter that they could have gotten much cheaper if they weren't so obsessed about what name was on the front.
