No. Himmel did nothing wrong, and you need to read "A Practical Guide for the Courtship of Elves, by Beren son of Barahir". It's for another fandom, but everything there applies here, and Himmel is the greatest of heroes for unsdesrtanding it without guidance. 😤

They would make a cute couple for sure! ^ ^ Frieren liked Himmel just as Himmel liked her ~ But I imagine a relationship between them would look like Himmel doing alot for her and then Frieren, from time to time, Maybe even on rare occasion, Doing a little sweet thing for him~ After all, She has all the time in the world, And the way she loves would be quite different from Himmel . As the type who keeps her feelings to herself all the time, And rarely shares what's on her mind, It would probably look one-sided most of the time, But it'd still be cute! ❤

Great video, but I want to point out some things. (1) What Ubel does with Wirbel and Land is NOT empathy. She may think that it is, but it's really not. It's at best sympathy and at worst pity. There are subtle, but important differences here that many are unaware of (due to relying on common understanding of these words rather then psychological definitions), or just ignore because they're fans of Ubel. There are many resources online by just searching for "sympathy vs empathy" or other such terms. One sample resource; "The Difference Between Empathy and Sympathy" from Psychology Today by Neel Burton: Key points Sympathy is a reaction to the plight of others. Empathy means sharing another person's emotions. Compassion is more engaged than simple empathy. And the chart goes like the following (in order of increasing Engagement): Pity: I acknowledge your suffering. ===> Sympathy: I care about your suffering. ===> Empathy: I feel your suffering. ===> Compassion: I want to relieve your suffering. Ubel is most likely just at the Pity stage when interacting with Wirbel and Land or any other mage for that matter. (2) I've seen far too many people be mistaken about the visualization thing in Frieren's magic system. For a spoiler-free explanation see the below excerpt from my main post on "rFrieren" titled "Important Lore that a lot of people get wrong": """ Visualization: Needed to activate/use a spell since a mage cannot make something happen if they can't clearly/exactly picture the desired outcome. Note that to clearly/exactly picture an outcome, one needs to have a complete understanding of said outcome. Therefore, they should have a complete understanding of the process that created that specific outcome/result as well (since only understanding an outcome without understanding the generating process, will be incomplete at best and flawed at worst). This is pretty much how it is in real life as well. Furthermore, a weak visualization can weaken a spell, but a strong visualization cannot strengthen a spell. Examples: (a) Regardless of Aura's visualization, her scales were already tilting towards Frieren, even though Aura was unaware that Frieren had more mana at that point. If it was a purely visualization based system, then Aura would've been able to dominate/control anyone including Frieren. (b) Ubel's visualization is ONLY taking advantage of Reelseiden's formula to cut anything in a 5? meter radius. Visualization is important, but it's not the be-all-end-all. Spells determine what's possible or not, and a mage's visualization can make them achieve between 0% to 100% of a spell's potential. They cannot just bs visualize/imagine themself into winning and/or doing the impossible. """

I don’t know, I think it makes sense that Himmel never made a move. He knew Frieren likely would understand, let alone be able to reciprocate those feelings. It makes a lot more sense when the Hero’s Party is talking with Old Man Voll

Just keeping to anime content, I think the answer is simply that Himmel knew that Frieren wasn't still at the stage of being ready to change. Sure, you can try to change someone else, but it's usually (if not always) not a good idea. They themselves have to be ready and willing to change. Himmel loved Frieren for who she was and not who she could/would become.

I wouldnt call Übel evil she just makes people shes around feel uneasy or unwell (thats why her name fits) because she learns the magic of other people by getting close to them.

I tried to have my OnePiece/Boku no hero academia/Black Clover fan friend to watch it... guess how that went. The most infuriating thing was that she usually watched and liked my other suggestions that weren't action based. But this didn't cut it for her.

In Ubel we trust

Ubel serves a really useful role in this story. she helps expand upon how magic works. See in this arc we start to learn some deeper things about magic in the freiren universe, and ubel helps underline one of the key limiting factors to magic. it's limited by the limits you put on yourself. oh of course there are practical limits, such as mana capacity or speed to cast spells or knowledge... but the true limits to magic, the "meta" limits to magic are down to the magicians self limitations. one of the reason why the demon king remained undefeated for as long as he did is because no-one and by no-one i mean Serie could envision his defete. Serie ultimately failed against the demon king because she could not imagine winning. So even for all her power she was limited by herself. The author uses Ubel to help the readers visualize some of the ways magicians limit themselves through their own... understanding. Ubel's magic works weird because ubel never learned magic "properly", what she does is something no one else can do, because to her this is how magic works. She's not limited by the traditional limits of magic, because unlike all the other mages in the story who were "limited" by Serie's own understanding of magic, and by extension her teachings, ubel never having been formally trained suffers under no such limits.

Ubel and Land make an interesting pair. Land is pretty terrified of her, but he's still able to work alongside her. She's quite direct and more than a little unhinged, but she's a fun character.

I've watched both of your Frieren videos now, and wow do you have insight! I'm seriously impressed. From the anime alone I got maybe half of the first video and didn't even realise this about Übel - Instant sub!

Not a psychopath. But definitely evil. Just not in drowning kittens and laughing way. Ubel is about her goals and nothing else. If something intrigues her that is enough for her. She doesn't seek to cause pain and misery. She is just a free spirit who won't let other people get in her way. This means killing is a reasonable way to solve a conflict to her. But she knows when it is appropriate to the situation or not. If she wasn't so unfettered you could believe she was just another pretty girl. If you fear her it is because you would seek to control her. And that is a big nono to her. But conversely she would make a great friend because she would reward such genuine emotion with her own. So long as you can come to terms with the fact she is just as free and wild as the wind then she would be a great person to know

Sorry, but Übel is a bad character for story-telling. "Unpredictable" is a bad trait for powers, because it just emphasizes that who wins the fight is author fiat. Good powers are predictable, but when you have a character whose power is basically self-delusion, who's to say what they can do?

Ubel only attacks people who are presented as threats to her or her progression. If you don't get in her way, she is not interested. The first-class mage she slayed made an assumption that he could fight her passively. But a passive fight is still a fight. His mis-understanding was on him - Sensa knew better.

Wow! Mr. Anime Affliction actually empathized with Übel. I didn't think that was even possible! Brilliant and spot-on observation about how to get on with human relationships.

Okay, I think it's ok to leave here my own analyze of why many people are so down bad for Ubel. Consider this a short essay: 1) Outfit. Yes, revealing outfits are NOT uncommon in anime, but most of the women in Frieren dress rather covered up, so Ubel stands out quite easily with her outfit. The effect is doubly stronger if you do not watch any other anime in parallel with Frieren. Not to mention the fact that the operator clearly wants to emphasize all of the above😏 2) Hair, or rather its color. Most of the characters in Frieren have normal hair color (dark, blond, red) and only a few stand out (Fern, Himmel, Aura, Frieren and Ubel herself). The green hair color is not only unique among the others in this anime, but also has a rather interesting shade that I personally associate with some kind of poison (partly reflecting her sadistic personality) 3) Eyes/Gaze. Ubel's eyes are half-closed most of the time. Often this reflects that the character is tired or bored, but in our case these eyes rather indicate a certain deceit and observation. In addition, the bored look most of the time emphasizes the moments when Ubel enters berserk mode and her eyes become crazy. This all says one thing - although Ubel is bloodthirsty, she knows when and with whom she can have a blast (bandits in the forest, the exam and its participants, the battlefield and the warriors on it). Although she is not a genius, she has more intelligence and self-control than a typical maniac. Ubel can be called a well-socialized sadist. 4) Stickiness to Land. It is ambiguous whether Ubel actually has any romantic/sexual feelings for Land, but her behavior around him gives off a Yandere vibe, which is largely loved precisely because of their persistence towards the person they are interested in. This seems even more attractive in contrast to Fern, whose Tsundere antics towards Stark irritate me a little. The romantic overtones and her persistent behavior are enough to make guys start whispering, "What a lucky bastard!" Even if Ubel does not have sincere feelings for Land (which I myself do not believe) - who said that you cannot build a stable relationship with a sociopath? 😅 5) Battle Junkie/Blood Knight. A character archetype that revels in fight and sometimes lives for that. In many ways they are similar to sadists, but sadists are primarily concerned with the possibility of hurting someone and because of this they often choose the weak and helpless. The Blood Knight is looking for challenges for themself, which makes them more noble than just bloodthirsty maniac, but still just as entertaining. Watching anime, I personally always associate myself with such characters, because they are here for the same thing I am for - cool battles and interesting drama. Well, Ubel is also special in that it’s not often that a girl is a Blood Knight. I can remember a lot of male Blood Knights (Hisoka, Sukuna, Touji, Guts, Nosferatu Zodd, Kenpachi) but I can’t immediately remember women who love battles. 6) Crazy enough to work. Let's be honest - despite her intelligence, Ubel is an ignoramus. She does not learn magic normally and achieves success rather from ignorance. But that’s exactly what makes her cool! What should be a flaw is her main strength, allowing her to bypass the laws of logic, learning and magic. This sounds especially appealing to audiences because most people hate spending time learning skills. At the same time, I would not call her a Mary Sue because she is still not omnipotent and she admits it herself. 7) Depravity/Forbidden fruit is sweet. People in general are drawn to amoral characters for one simple reason - heroes do what they have to, and villains do what they want. And anti-heroes like Ubel are bad enough to stand out and seem brave/free, but not monstrous enough to be disgusting. This is the root cause of my personal interest in her - of all Frieren characters (not counting demons), she is the only one who can be called immoral. To sum it all up, the overall reason for Ubel's appeal is that she is a successful rebel. A rebel against local fashion (just look at her outfit again). A rebel against morality (but again, not to a completely monstrous extreme). A rebel against logic itself, after all. In other words, she eats when she wanna eat, plays with what amuses her, and kill whoever's in her way. She lives as befits her nature. If no one can grasp that, then that's their problem😉. Although she is a minor character, she is one of my favorites in Frieren

I don't really consider Ubel evil... she's very much Chaotic to Lawful Neutral.

I am not sure I would describe Ubel as either evil or a psychopath. Psychopaths are not empaths, and Ubel is clearly empathic. And while she is more comfortable with killing than I would like, she appears to have only killed one person by accident. She _was_ willing to kill the thieves who had attempted to rob her, but that is clearly a case of self-defense. Ubel is also quite logical in how she approaches things and is willing to work with others to further her goals. Maybe 'antisocial' is a more appropriate term for her - she doesn't seek out others, and I am not sure if she would be willing to subsume her own goals to those of a group (be it a small team or society as a whole or a specific country or kingdom), so antisocial. But she doesn't seem to go out of her way to cause trouble, and doesn't even violate rules of law or custom that we see. As for dealing with difficult people - I would look to how Fern deals with Frieren as a better example! ;)

The best way I’d describe this show is “effortlessly emotional” It doesn’t really create heartbreaking circumstances that hit particularly hard, but the heartache and nostalgia lingers throughout the entirety of the show. It is a constant, just like how real life emotions are. As humans, we constantly are feeling a certain emotion, but it is muted most of the time, and doesn’t just bubble up out of nowhere. This show peppers small moments of happiness and character growth on a muted background of sadness, instead of being happy or uplifting with sudden moments of sadness and regret, and in that way, the emotions hit a deeper level instead of just making the watcher cry. The emotions feel *real*.

She is not Evil psychopath, she is more like a chaotic neutral. she is like paid mercenary, she doesn't care which side she is as long as she is getting paid for it or getting what she wants in the process. Evil is simply Evil, you can't pay and evil person to do something, and evil person will also kill the one feeding them.

The part at 4:32 about acknowledging a problem, specifically being late is true and worked very well for me. I worked as a pizza delivery driver in the 90's and when things got really busy on the weekend the first thing I did when I greeted the customer was sincerely apologise for their wait. I know other drivers didn't really do that since they complained about not getting much in tips but I could make 2x-3x more in tips when we were running late than on time.

There's also the simple joy in magic Frieren, it's taking joy in something you love. She collects magic spells because she loves magic and her reaction to Fern picking the ultimate level utility spell is brilliant. She could have picked anything, powerful magic that few wield. And Fern shows the influence of her teacher by picking a spell to keep her cloths clean.
